p.s. I've "always" liked "HALLOWEEN 3: Season Of The Witch" as well. Always. Its a cool, weird film that not only takes you down that interesting alternate path, but also brings us those fantastic 3 masks 🎃🧟💀 + the song, which has become part of horror history in and of itself. Btw, I think 'the best' point you made during this clip is that people need to understand the time. Movies were uniquely cool in the late 70s and early 80s. There's far too many adjectives to properly describe it. But that particular capsule of time was very special...and happily "devoid" of all the Myers, Vorhees, Krueger worship which came soon after. I'll never forget seeing these films in the theater or on pay cable back then. For instance, a but later on, seeing the first "Nightmare On Elm Street" with my girlfriend at the theater... before anyone knew who Freddie was. And the nature of that first one, totally Wes Craven, was evil, surreal and totally affecting. With straight up violent deaths and macabre visions all through it. And "at that time" this movie was so effective, that we felt palpably frightened to leave the theater through the side EXIT door, which opened to a little puddle of water and a tall/thin cement stairway, leading up to the parking lot. Only stray light shining down. And why did we feel this? Because there were no "jokes" from Krueger...he was only this wide-eyed, scarred madman who wanted to slice you up. No silly, half-assed rock songs during the credits either. It was just "over," with creepy score playing....and you had to leave.
@EdwinCannistraci
@EdwinCannistraci 3 ай бұрын
All great points and thanks for sharing your memory of first seeing Nightmare on Elm Street. I can only imagine how scary that must have been (before Freddy became such 'a personality"). That's the thing: once all these slashers got into the late 80s, they became too iconic and too familiar and the overall style of the films had softened and lost their edge.

It's fine and fun when these "psycho madmen" get personalities and fan clubs, but for me, I like it when they're frightening and dangerous. Hard to be either of those when you're cracking jokes and/or performing stunt kills, mostly for laughs. Again, I'm cool with that. I just wish they would've ignored the over zealous fans, focused in and made a few more truly scary entries first. ⚡

I love part two, in particular Jason’s bag head, so cool that and a perfect progenitor to the iconic hockey mask that followed. I find the bag head really creepy and fitting for an early more inexperienced Jason. Incidentally, check out the recent slasher ‘In a Violent Nature’. It wears its Friday influence on its sleeve. Good points on this video. But nurse Karen's conversation was a timing device. So we knew she had to go somewhere else and make it to the Hospital. So that they could make it to the hospital at the same time for the rearview mirror shot. I also read that they added the boombox scene so people could understand how Michael would know Laurie is at the Hospital. But Halloween II is ultimately the only satisfying sequel and the only one I really watch anymore. It just feels like a Halloween movie with some iconic Myers scene.
@EdwinCannistraci
@EdwinCannistraci 3 ай бұрын
I probably could've made an entire video on my stalking/Nurse Karen theory and clarified a few things. I know the soundtrack cue for the boombox scene is entitled "He Knows Where She Is", so there is that element in play, but regardless of why Karen was introduced where she was, Michael is pretty focused on her after he slips into the hospital and, judging from the film itself, it appears he's stalking her in the same manner he has stalked other women. Even if Laurie is the ultimate goal, Michael gets distracted easily by pretty young women, so it's not like he's relentlessly "on mission" like he's presented in the mid period sequels. For example, there's Alice's murder in the beginning, which served no strategic purpose in regards to tracking down and killing Laurie. Plus, there's no logical explanation for how Michael would even know Laurie is his sister, but I'll concede there's a supernatural undercurrent (especially with how Michael cannot be killed), so, at very least, on SOME level Michael knows Laurie is connected to him. Whether ot not he is literally thinking "She's my sister" or simply "This one REALLY seems like my sister" doesn't matter in my opinion: it still results in him being drawn to Laurie in some capacity. How much he knows and how much of it is calculated? I think that's open to interpretation. That's one of the many reasons the Carpenter/Hill approach was so much more sophisticated and satisfying that later incarnations of Michael. They never explained too much and retained most of the mystery surrounding his character. Anyway, thanks for watching and for commenting. It's fun talking about this stuff, huh? 🖤🎃💀
@dougg98
@dougg98 3 ай бұрын
@@EdwinCannistraci good thoughts. I think the Alice parallel is in play for Karen. He likes to kill attractive girls. I always took his "stalking" Karen was him just getting to and getting familiar with the hospital. And then he is setting this up for his final prey which is Laurie. He's methodical in that sense - like the first movie. Your basic premise that this is the best slasher movie is a strong case. I think the only Friday movie I would think is as good would be IV and I haven't seen that one in years. The rest were pretty cookie-cutter. Any other slashers you think are at this level? Good stuff!
@EdwinCannistraci
@EdwinCannistraci 3 ай бұрын
@@dougg98 Thanks again and yeah: Michael could definitely multi-task when it came to killing. 😅 Friday the 13th Part IV is a strong contender and it's definitely the strongest entry in that franchise (although I also enjoy III and V). Psycho III is more of a pure slasher than the first two films and I think it has a higher quality than most films in the genre: I'm a big fan of it. Although supernatural slashers, I love the first four Nightmare on Elms Street films and even though I can tell the original and third one are stronger, my favorite is the second one (Freddy's Revenge). It's such a dark and twisted film. And finally, Dario Argento's Tenebrae is probably the closest to a pure slasher he ever made and I also love that film and think it's a contender.

Sorry, but no, the sibling twist doesn't fall into place and doesn't work with what we've already seen in the first film. First of all, it is inconsistent with the continuity of the original film, as Laurie Strode is only four years younger than Michael, which would have made her two years old when Michael killed his sister Judith in 1963. This would have made it impossible for anyone (especially Dr. Loomis) to not know who she was. Also, Michael is seen spending most of the night stalking Annie and Lynda at the Wallace house and ignoring Laurie and Tommy at the Doyle house, which makes no sense if he escaped from Smith's Grove with the specific intent of killing her. Second, John Carpenter has since stated that the sibling twist was a mistake, and was not a "Eureka moment" since he was writing the script under the influence of a lot of beer and admittedly had no idea what he was doing since he felt that there was no more story to tell. Carpenter has said that the sibling revelation detracts from the mystery of Michael's actions and was unnecessary, as Michael needed no such motivation for stalking Laurie in the first film.
@EdwinCannistraci
@EdwinCannistraci 3 ай бұрын
@@44excalibur All fair points and good observations, but I think Carpenter is spinning the genesis of the sibling twist in the same negative light as he did the film later on. Obviously when Debra and him were writing the script, it wouldn’t have stuck if they thought it was a bad idea. They had rethought and revised several story elements during the process and it was their production. I did make a case that it makes more sense that Michael is only subconsciously drawn to Laurie and is acting more on instinct than thinking “This girl is my sister.” They don’t clarify it in the film, but maybe Dr. Loomis knew Michael had a baby sister, but after Laurie was adopted she took on the name “Strode” and it’s possible this wasn’t made aware to him (at the request of the Strode family). It works for me anyway. But like I said in the video, I think they leaned into the family angle too much in the mid period sequels. But I like how they handled it in II and it thematically makes sense since a sister was at the center of Michael’s psychosis.
@44excalibur
@44excalibur 3 ай бұрын
@@EdwinCannistraci Well, again, the problem with your analysis is that Laurie being Michael's sister, again, is not consistent with the first film and defies narrative logic. Again, if it is established that there is only a four year age gap between Michael and Laurie, then she would have been two years old at the time Michael killed his sister when he was six. In Halloween II, Marion Chambers tells Dr. Loomis that the file on Laurie was sealed and kept from him, which would never have happened since Dr. Loomis would have been given full disclosure of the case by law. Also, even if Michael's parents had somehow both died at the same time after he was committed (a convenient coincidence), Laurie would have been put in foster care until she would have been legally adopted by another family. There's just too much time and paperwork going into those things for it to just go unnoticed, including by Laurie herself, who would have been four years old by then. As for Carpenter, again, Carpenter stated several times that he had no intention of making a sequel, but was forced into it by producer Irwin Yablans and the studio. Carpenter felt that there was no more story left to tell, and he and Debra did not put too much thought into the sibling twist. They were making the script only for money, since they would have been paid a lot more than they were for the first film, from which they never received the profits from. Also, remember that Carpenter was working on Escape from New York at the same time that Halloween II was in production, so he wasn't really devoting all of his attention to Halloween II. The tacked-on sibling plot twist was simply something that he just added on arbitrarily and he later regretted, and again, it simply doesn't fit with the first movie. If Michael targeted Laurie because she was his sister, then why did he stalk Tommy Doyle at his school as well? Why spend so much time stalking Annie and Lynda and ignore Laurie altogether? Your attempts at rationalizing the sibling twist is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Again, it was just a plot twist that Carpenter added because he simply had no ideas left and didn't really put too much thought into. Halloween II would have been a much better film if that twist had never been added to the story in the first place.

First of all, as I've stated earlier, the plot twist making Laurie turn out to be Michael's sister is inconsistent with the continuity of the first film, as Laurie is 17 years old and Michael is 21, meaning she would have been two years old when Michael killed his sister Judith in 1963 and therefore her real identity would have been known to everyone, including Dr. Loomis. It's also illogical since Michael spends most of the night stalking Annie and Lynda at the Wallace house and mostly ignores Laurie at the Doyle house. Also, the sibling revelation detracts from the mystery of Michael's actions, something that John Carpenter himself admitted was a mistake and a decision he made while under the influence of a lot of beer and having no idea of what to write. Second, the hospital location is implausible as no hospital would be that dark and understaffed on Halloween, the busiest night of the year. The lack of staff and any visible patients aside from the boy with the razor blade stuck in his mouth makes the situation unrealistic. Also, the bland hospital setting lacks the atmosphere of the first film, where Michael was stalking the darkened streets and houses of Haddonfield like a ghost. Third, stuntman Dick Warlock as Michael Myers as a significant step down from Nick Castle. For one, Warlock was slightly shorter than Castle, and the mask didn't fit on his head as well as it did Castle's. Also, director Rick Rosenthal made the mistake of allowing Warlock's eyes to be visible through the mask, something Carpenter specifically avoided doing in the original Halloween, where you never saw Michael's eyes through the mask. And finally, Dick Warlock lacked the smooth, graceful, effortless walk and body movement that Nick Castle had in the first film, as Warlock's movements were slow and stiff by comparison.

@@44excalibur I respectfully disagree with most of your points (and I responded to the sibling angle in your other comment). If you think that beautifully Dean Cundey shot hospital is a “bland” setting, I wonder if you’ve only seen the pan & scan version on TV. So much visual atmosphere. It’s only revealed in a deleted scene, but the reason the hospital is dark is because Michael cut the power. Regardless, I don’t think the film should be viewed with such a “real world” mindset. Like the Italian horror films that influenced it, the film is dreamlike and borders on a dark fantasy at times. Even the first film did this to a degree by making Michael impossible to kill. Also like the Fog, the Carpenter/Hill Halloween films are all about abstraction of the supernatural and the horror elements (once again, something that comes from Italian horror). And this is of course just an opinion and I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer Dick Warlock as the Shape. He feels like a bigger and more visceral threat and seeing his eyes makes the mask look creepier IMO. That all being said, I appreciate you commenting and I love reading different opinions.

@@EdwinCannistraci The hospital is a bland setting because it has a white, sterile look that doesn't match the organic setting and backgrounds of the original film. Dean Cundy's cinematography on the first film is unequaled, and he makes that street between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard look like another world entirely in every-town USA. Also, if Michael had cut the power in the hospital, the backup generators would immediately kick in, and technicians would be called to inspect the damage. Police would also be stationed there in the event of a victim of a triple murder. Also, one drunk doctor, two paramedics, and four nurses in the entire hospital? And where are all the patients? Aside from the infants in the maternity ward and that kid with the mouth injury, there was no one other than Laurie. The first film didn't do anything that was as implausible as that. As for Dick Warlock, even Debra Hill admitted that his movement and presence didn't match Nick Castle's. As for the illogical sibling twist, I've pretty much shown that there's no way to make that one work on any level that makes sense. But again, you are free to your opinion and I appreciate the reply.

@ Sorry I don’t have the more canonized and critically acceptable opinion that the original Halloween is better than Halloween II. And like I said in the video, artists aren’t always the best judge of their own work. In his 1980 Playboy interview John Lennon said half his songs in the Beatles were lousy. Does that mean I have to agree with him and dislike “And Your Bird Can Sing” and “Cry Baby Cry” (two songs he hated that I love). But that being said, I likewise appreciate the reply and you commenting. 👍🏼

Halloween II certainly has a lot going for it. A follow-up album made in peak years is almost always better than anything down the line. One thing against it though is Dick Warlock. Talented guy but not a good choice for Michael. He's too short and the mask looks odd on his head. Cuts into the intimidation factor.

Thanks for watching and for weighing-in (even if I dig Dick Warlock's short and oddly shaped head Shape 😉).

Halloween 2 sucks as much as Halloween Resurrection,coincidentally they have the same director.

Yeah, except one had John Carpenter and Debra Hill at the helm as writers and producers and no Busta Rhymes, the other... 😅
