You reminded me. I've read 'babel'. my goddess, that was not a good book. I understand you liked it because it was heavily criticizing colonialism but it was so boring. The lengthy descriptions of feelings and inner thoughts, the characters lacked substance or any likeability, all of them were meh, didn't care about them one bit, especially the main character. Kill'em off? no shits would've been given. The events? lackluster at best. In my opinion it was potential wasted down the drain :| (not to mention that it was very one-sided and I don't think China should've gotten scot free considering their history and current approach to human rights.)

not sorry that the critique of mass genocide and culture erasure is boring to you . you sound a little racist and that a lot of the points the book was making went right over your head - dark academia books arent for everyone to comprehend (and what do you mean one-sided? china did not get off scot free - they were manipulated by the british and other european countries for years with the opium wars - and chinese and other asian people are still being persecuted to this day for things a government did and in turn western media inflates and demonizes individuals instead of power structures )

The part I didn't like the characters or the fact that I didn't like to read 10 pages about feelings after a murder? Reading about mass genocide of my own people would be equally as boring if it was written in the same way. Didn't know I need to find every tragic and traumatic event interesting and if not I will be a accused of being racist. And china in the book wasn't criticized once, that's how they got Scot free. They murdered their citizens and they are oppressing them right now (have you seen what happened during covid or criticizing their govmt is also racist now??), they pretend that never happened, they support Russia during extermination on Ukraine and are getting ready to jump onto Taiwan but sure, let's pretend they can only be victims. History is complicated so it shouldn't be so flattened.

I don’t believe that Kat’s response flattens history. But she is talking about the book and the events and time line of that period…. Not the things surrounding it or the actions of a government today. So yes it does appear that the point of the book did in fact go over your head given your response. No one is saying historically any nation or government is perfect but we should be able to look at the events that Babel represents through the lense of those characters and gain a better understanding of the topic at hand. This reads as literary fiction and dark academia…so, maybe you should just steer from that genre moving forward if it was the style you didn’t like on top of the important conversational topic the book provided.

@@jennalouisedreams7002 well, maybe we can ask each other what we meant by certain statements if we are not sure cos assuming leads nowhere. what I mean by "one sided" is that since china today is such a villain we shouldn't look past any opportunity to criticize them - that I found flattened and one sided, not Kat's response. I understand it is whataboutism on my part but I just feel that we could've dag deeper to tie together past and present issues because what can we do about the past? Nothing but to accept and learn from it. Yet we can do a whole lot about more about the present and future which the book had the opportunity to comment on but didn't take it which is disappointing to me. That's the author's right to hyper focus but that is exactly the flatness I was talking about... (and btw I'd be just as disappointed if it was the USA or Russia instead of China, those are all imperialistic countries who have been behaving unacceptably, to put it mildly, for centuries now). It might be fuller or more interesting to Kat because it seems it is her present still. I'd also count that as a fail of the book if it has trouble enticing and captivating attention of people with different backgrounds because why preach to believers (NOT saying that anybody needs to convince me that colonialism was disgusting, it was, in so many ways)? That's simply an echo chamber. Kat's response was emotional and baseless, she treated my criticism as if I disliked the subject of the book which is not true, not once have I mentioned that I had an issue with that, it was a very intriguing concept (magic of the silver included), important one to learn about, I found it boring because the events were just so simplistic. I could sum up the plot in 5 short sentences. Maybe that was author's specific goal to not take away from the issue with over complicated events but in my opinion it worked the opposite way. Those are my issues and because I have them on the book that goes about colonialism doesn't mean I am stupid or racist - accusing me of that and being offended over someone not liking a certain book is more of a statement on you than me. (excuse my essay, I am not a woman of a few words.)
