@@Alepain962 Essentially yeah. Some procedures or medications require what’s called a prior authorization were you have to get approval ahead of time from them for a procedure. It’s common for insurance to deny everything or to require a ton of paperwork even for consideration of approval. I actually saw this before. In Germany, the ambulance service relies not only on paramedics, but more serious cases are also seen by an ambulance doctor. Usually this is done by anaesthesia/critical care, but any doctor can do a short course and become an ambulance doctor. And so there I was with an ortho as ambulance doctor. We saw a stroke and he whipped out the "FAST" scheme. Seriously, bone bro? Firstly, "FAST" is for untrained first aiders, for the average Joe, I expect you to know a bit more about neurology than "Face, Arms, Speech". And even if, "FAST" is outdated! Nowadays it's "BE FAST" (+ Balance, Eyes)! Knowing that this guy might be dispatched to save my parents is indeed scary.

Our dental office made a big production of buying halloween candy from kids, but the amount was something like 1/lb and even little kids can see that's a scam XD Meanwhile we tried to figure out if my nieces and nephew had even a pound of unwanted candy (like the giant marshmallow peanuts, or several kinds of really old hard caramel things that are still given out around here). Adding insult to injury, they refused to accept apples or cans of full-sugar soda, which made up 75% of the weight in the first place! I understand why, but those apples are generally turned into a pie or cake a few days after Halloween, because we clearly all need more sugar! Or because they're mostly Macintosh and I don't like them nearly as much as whatever I currently have in my fridge. They make great cider and good apple cake and decent pies, but snacking? No thank you.

My dad's had a few neurologists over the years. The one he has now is the head of the Neuro department and Dad still says stuff like "are you sure?" Like, Dad, your degree is in World History and International Business. Shut up and do what the expert says. The doc is actually really patient though and walks Dad through his thought process and explains it really clearly. One of his old doctors was an old army dude and when Dad would try to argue he'd just immediately and ruthlessly shut him down. Like Dad would be like "what about -" and the guy would cut him off and be like "No." Without further explanation.
@whynotjustmyusername
@whynotjustmyusername Жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't mind patients asking me whether I'm sure. I'm the expert, but I'm not immune from overlooking something or forgetting a detail that might matter. I also usually don't mind if patients have done some research before and tell me of their worries. I myself am a bit of a hypochondriac, chronic med student's disease, as Dr Schmidt aptly described it, and I much rather have them tell me their absurd suspicion so I can properly explain why it is not that (or, in some cases even do another test to actually be sure it's not that) rather than them walking out unsure and doubtful of my competence. You know why? Because I do the same all the time, even though I have some more experience where to look up symptoms properly. If a colleague was to tell me that my own suspicion was nonsense without explaining why, I wouldn't trust them to know how to actually tell if my suspicion is correct. What is annoying though, is when they insist on their layman's "diagnosis" or when their research wandered off into the pseudoscientific realm and they come walking in with some weird "energy flux" or want "orgon therapy" or some nonsense like this. Those are not the majority of people though.
