In this video, we'll visit the beautiful town Hallstatt in Austria, where we did some cityscape photography and I will show how I make a timelapse. Located in the Alps next to a lake it's hard to find a more idyllic town than Hallstatt. We stayed until after sunset and did a bit of night photography too.

Ahh, Hallstatt! Went there with my late wife about 15 years ago. Taking the ferry from the train is a real hoot. The lake is very deep and the water is deep black. The Catholic Church should have some nice photo ops. We went up the Seilbahn, then took a trail west past the archeological sites. Soon we went down a steep road south toward Lahn. Many switchbacks and awesome waterfalls. There’s also a hiking trail just west and up from the Catholic Church. Understand that the high country south from the top of the Seilbahn goes eventually to Ramsau am Dachstein, another must-see location. Hint: to pronounce Hallstatt, say hall, but pull the corners of your mouth toward the back of your neck until you can’t stretch them further. Then do some more.

Nice video Mads! One things I've found in some of my timelapse work is that sticking with a shutter speed that is 1/2 of your interval (interval being the time between the start of each exposure) gives a very natural motion blur to elements of the scene that are moving faster - for instance, the boats in your scene. I've got a couple of "fun" timelapses on my channel that illustrate the effect. Obviously this would require using a variable ISO when shooting a scene with changing light with a fixed aperture. Also, do you use anything to smooth out the exposure jumps?
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Ross! Nope I don't really get those exposure jumps, so I haven't had to deal with it :)

Looking back, personally I think the British episode I like most. This is maybe because Germany, the Alps, Italy and Austria is my "home region" and simply Britain isn't... But to be honest (for me) nothing compares to Glencoe and the Isle of Skye. :-) That all said, I am really looking forward to watch your vblog(s) of the Lofoten Islands! Take care Mads.

Hi Mads, Great shots of the Hallstat city! Is the day to night timelapse from the Sony camera simply straight out of camera, or have you done any deflickering (exposure jump compensation) in post? Ive heard that the Sony's actually produce a very clean and flicker free result straight out of camera. Anyway yours look super smooth!
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Jonas! It's straight out, but with a bit of PP on the raw files. I haven't done any deflickering at all. All my timelapses are done with either my RX100IV or a6000 :)

Hey Mads, I waited for this video since we visited Hallstatt last summer. I was really wondering what you would make of this place so I can compare to my pictures. It's a real charming place and It's funny to see that the Asiatic crowd is always present, no matter what time of year you visit. I think we even had the same 2 people in wedding dresses like in your video that day. Are they actors and actresses that are paid to fill the streets ? What do you think of that 😀 ? For now, I'm counting down to your Lofoten series, realy curious about that ! Thanks in advance for sharing...

as charming and cute this place is, I somehow don't like the composition of this postcard view... it's just never balanced, too crowded with the houses on the right side, compared to the empty lake on the left. Still, I really liked the way you edited the shots, made it look like out of a fairytale :) and I really liked the practical advice, I agree it's a useless taboo, as if landscape photographers are not normal people who have to do their stuff haha :) also I was always wandering how you do the time-lapses, thanks for clearing that up :) cheers!

You're very welcome Nina! Yeah it's a hard one to balance. Afterwards, I've actually cropped the photos a lot :)

Which area of study is Ms. Sophie pursuing her PhD in? Will you then have to refer to her as Dr. Sophie in future videos?

Lol, that might be the case yes :P It's Science of Religion. Specifically the transition from the old norse gods to Christianity in Scandinavia and what holds a culture together.
