Another beautiful location Mads - you must be clocking up the air miles. Julian Baird told me about a podcast that you did with Nick Page and I found it fascinating to hear who you put your videos together and how you have developed your unique style. "Sunsire you moron" - I'm glad even you make mistakes; I'm forever getting east and west mixed up.

Haha yeah! I make mistakes all the time and forgetting what to say... I just don't show it ;) air miles aren't too bad... but car! Jesus... I've spend a lot of time in a car the past year :D

Sometimes you just don't appreciate the beauty this world offers until you see it through another's eyes. Mads another great episode and enjoyed the PS session as well as this is an area I would consider i need to learn more about. Cant help but feel inspired to do better when you post a vlog Been watching Dave Morrow's vlogs as well as he also shares some good tutorials from his landscape photography adventures so between you both I plan to go back and revisit some old images to see what further difference I can make.

Great video as always... IMHO, too much editing. Not to be critical, but I prefer your video style before you were showing editing techniques. Some editing is always good, but the balance this time seems too heavy. This is less a "location" video and more of a "technique" video.

Solid video as always! Would love to see more stuff from Denmark, I personally find our Nordic landscapes, excluding the northern-beyond-the-wall-mountains, to be much more creatively challenging than mountains (which we love to shoot for obvious reasons), but when we get it right - it’s really worth it! I’m saying this in a mutually challenging spirit as I too would do well to look at my backyard! Maybe we could do a “best backyard photo vlog challenge” and let the viewers decide who did it best? Maximum 50k from our houses for location? Two weeks deadline for delivery? All in good fun spirit, of course! Challenge accepted?!
@MadsPeterIversen

I'll surely make more from Denmark at some point. For now, I'm pretty busy with other projects, but maybe I'll make it a summer project to get around Denmark :) As much as I'd like the challenge I simply don't have the time these days. I'm in a run to get a lot of videos done before I'll go to Iceland for a couple of months. But maybe some time in the future!

One little tip when dealing with the mask is to use the dodge and burn tools on the mask. Just set it to midtones and you can either dodge or burn the midtones to either remove or add to the mask without effecting the highlights or shadows. Another tip is to create a copy of your smart object. You can use the copy to push things to be able to create a better mask. Like if you just want to deal with the sky just push the sky till its white or almost white and try to push the landscape till its almost black. Use that to create the mask and then move that mask to your actual working layer.

Stunning drone footage Mads - when you flew above that fog, it was magical! I’ve seen you post drone photos before, and I wonder if you might have overlooked a possible still shot there from the drone - perhaps you can pull a still frame from your video? I don’t have a drone, and have been weary of getting one, but some of your footage makes me feel like I’m missing out. As for the editing side, I really liked how you showed a basic luminosity masking technique that works without relying on some of the complex plugins for this that exist for Photoshop. That makes the technique useful for people like me who aren’t using Photoshop, but another program where those plugins aren’t available. I also liked your dodging technique - I haven’t seen it done that way before. I usually mask in a curves adjustment with a low flow brush for that, but your technique seems more precise because of the apply image mask that also affects the dodging. Some great techniques and beautiful imagery! Thanks for sharing! As for Nick Page, congratulations for being featured on his channel! I look forward to watching it. Nick seems like a super nice and down-to-earth guy, and I’ve enjoyed a number of his videos in the past.

Great idea with post-processing part, Mads. I like how you are trying to add new value to KZbin landscape photography community. I feel like you are already goin it with your “Photographing a country” series. There are few other, great photography on location vloggers, some of them you mention from time to time and I really did enjoy that you are not doing the same, and putting your videos in a context of a trip to a given country. Now you’re doing the same. Instead of teaching post-processing only you are putting it in the context of the shoot. It adds extra value of connecting on location photography (finding composition, proper settings for given conditions etc.) with the post-processing. The only person I’ve seen doing it is Elia Locardi. Great job!

Great video, Mads. Loved the drone footage but would not have wanted to have spend so much time on post processing. To ask an expert like yourself, could this time have been shortened with similar results by using ND grad filters? Love your channel.
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Tony. It was actually a very short PP. I can easily spend hours on a single photo. I'd argue no in regard to the ND grad. I wouldn't have been able to do the same with a grad. The line between the foreground and sky is not straight so the ND would overlap parts of the foreground, which would be even more annoying to deal with in PP ;)

Great video! Can anyone tell me why he chose to merge two images rather than using a ND grad filter in this situation?
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
Well you can ask me ;) Because I don't own one and because the area between the sky and ground isn't straight. The ND would either overlap the ground or not be very effective in the entire sky making an uneven photo which I'd have to fix in post afterward. I'd prefer to use some very precise techniques such as luminosity masks instead :)

That luminosity mask tip is invaluable. I went all the way back to 2007 to a bracketed photo I took in Zion National Park which had always given me trouble, and I got a good result using the luminosity mask. Many thanks!

I really look forward to your videos. I didn’t like to hear about clipping the red channel on a sunrise... The way you blended the sunrise reminded me of Albert Bierstadt and others in the Hudson River School of painters.

Good to hear Stuart - you say you "didn't like to hear about"? I showed how not to do it? :)

Well, I may owe you an apology. What I remember was you talking about using the rgb histograms so you didn't clip the red channel on a sunrise or sunset. I thought I also heard you say that the red was a bit clipped but that was ok. However, I just skimmed through most of your video and couldn't find any of that. Was I confused? As you know, whatever hue is there goes toward white as channels get clipped. These days it is popular to have an actual sun's disk which is yellow. I need to go back to a museum, but I recall that oil paintings from the Hudson River School often showed an area of dead white where the sun would be, bounded by the sharp edges of clouds. The deeper reds and oranges would be a bit further away. Your images with the fog and the cabins seemed to have such an area, at least on KZbin, and I found it pleasing. I will also hypothesize that since camera dynamic ranges seem to have gone in a few years from 12 stops or less up to 15, perhaps it is no longer necessary to take 5 bracketing shots. Still, I haven't done all my homework on that issue. Again, awesome video overall.

Thank you for this, what a great video! Hope i can get some time to see all the new videos. I have recently discovered due to a trip to Iceland that most part of the "new" photographers use to much photoshop, and make fake photos using skies from other shots, especially with the northern lights. Its good to see that there are still some professional photographers who see the photography as I do. Keep the good work!!! Pd: If you ever need someone to carry your equipment just let me know 😂😂😂

Hey Luis, I'm sorry to disappoint you but I often composite my photos. Personally I don't care, because it's not about documenting for me, but about creating ;) To me photography is not a treasure hunt for the "best" photo, it's how I can express myself through the landscapes :) Anyway, I hope you'll still enjoy the videos :)

Mads Peter Iversen I agree that it's creation and i love some of them but I mean the ones that want to make profit from faking people like, come to my workshop to Iceland and you will get this pictures (the composite ones) when they are imposible without doing post processing, like a milkyway in a city full of light. I think it's okey as long as you say how they were made if you are asked, just my opinion. 😀

Fantastic Mads, I will be following this series very closely since I'am already based in Germany! Just 658 km North of Geroldsee :( - Enjoyed the drone footage at the start, great scenery above the mist and again thank you for your tutorial. P.S @ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmTceoVnbcx2jbc it should be "of course" ;)

WOW this was a nice drone flight. I have been there twice (sunrise & sunset) and twice I was lucky with the weather. Although I know place, it was a very special moment, to see another perspective given by the drone - that was simply speaking, great! It gave me a nice laugh when I see those people standing at the most common spot. Yes, at Geroldsee you are never alone, regardless the time. :-)

Thank you, Andreas - well I could cut it all together, but considered this technique is a bit more advanced than last weeks episode I think 15min is pretty good :) I didn't have much to show at the location and I'd rather not waste peoples time putting in useless fill :)
@pin65371
@pin65371 6 жыл бұрын
There are so many videos for "on location" photography but there is a lack of videos for the post processing side of things. Its easy for someone to just post videos of them taking the photo and then show what it looks like at the end. Someone that doesnt really know what happens behind the scenes might get frustrated when they realize that without learning the post processing side of things they will never get those portfolio shots.

Sorry, but this one isn't really good. It shows that you're not really skilled in the place and the landscape (I'm from Germany and know a lot of really good pics from this place). If you want to be a second Thomas Heaton, you have to address yourself more with the places..... Wrong time, wrong place...
@MadsPeterIversen
@MadsPeterIversen 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it's intended but that comment comes off as both ignorant and arrogant? On several occasions, I've said I don't want to be a second Thomas Heaton - I even say it in the podcast I refer to in the end. He inspires me, but I don't want to copy him. And of course, I'm not skilled in this location. I literally said in the past video I wasn't prepared for this part of the journey. My videos are intended to inspire and inform - not lay out everything the location. That's also why I show so much of the environment and location as to prepare people and give them an idea of what to expect. They do have to think for themselves on location and adjust to the environment as I did.

Great stuff as always Mads. The photography is excellent but of particular note is how next level the drone work is in this video. The movement in, out, through, and around the clouds was mesmerizing. Throw in the pro tips for post processing and you have once again topped yourself. I think this is now my favorite videos on your channel. The bar has been raised again! :)
