Custom games were what I spent most of my time on back in Halo 3. Having like 16 player lobbies playing games like Duck Hunt, Fat Man/Boy, Ghostbusters, Monster Truck, Smear the Quear, Garbage Man, Close the Door, Jenga, Michael Jackson, Halo on Halo, the Sky fortress on Standoff, Mexican Bull Run, Cops and Robbers,Not to mention the tons of various infection game types(some where youd find yourself in a warthog being chased by fast sword zombies on Sandtrap). Tons of these included alot of the maps you called garbage. Im kinda upset you failed to mention this integral part of the Halo 3 experience. I truly wish I could could go back to those Custom Game days and relive them. Some of the best gaming memories I've ever had.

Halo 3 will always have a spot for me, it was the first game I got on the 360 when I was young. I had the original and you needed a wifi adapter to play online, I didn't have online until after halo reaches release and I played countless hours of the campaign and forge like endless hours. I know every nook and cranny of halo 3 and the campaign was good enough that I kept always coming back to play it. The covenant was my favourite level, halo is a game where massive battles suit it and fit it perfectly. The forunners shouldn't have been introduced as enemy's, the covenant was excellent. Halo 3 is my favourite game by far. Thanks bungie.. For the great game.. :)

I agree with the core premise of this but I want to add that Zanzibar is better for asymmetrical objective gametypes but Last Resort is better for team slayer. The main reason being that the randomised initial spawns of Halo 2 made Zanzibar a dice roll of who spawns closer to one of the snipers will win 95% of the time but Last Resort entirely fixes that problem. Your assessments of Halo 3's multiplayer were pretty weak. To say the maps are just previous game's levels re-made "but worse" is not only dismissive but untrue. To say it "pales in comparison" is also pretty unfair. Halo 3's maps are basically evolutions of Halo 2's, and while it's undeniable that Halo 3 is essentially Halo 2 part 2, it's additions weren't trivial or regressive. I wouldn't quite say you dismissed all the maps with a sentence or paragraph. At least not well. Halo 3's maps, even the remakes, work fine because of how much more skill Halo 3 takes in comparison to Halo 2 with the projectile weapons as opposed to Halo 2's immediate Hitscan weapons. And equipment changed the game massively! To downplay it as an afterthought because of the shittier ones like radar jammer is really downplaying how much they affected Halo's gameplay. Powerdrain isn't a free kill- it was meant to be a counter to vehicles and overshield! Overall great video, but your ultimate assessment of Halo 3's multiplayer element as a weaker Halo 2 is, in a lot of ways, baseless or at the very least weakly defended.

i disagree about the maps. I liked maps like lockout and stuff in halo 2, but dont go saying that guardian is to be compared to it. Guardian is one of my favorite maps in halo 3, and honestly, i liked everything about halo 3's multiplayer better. The reason you often hear that halo 3 is the best, is simply because it was. Nothing, not halo reach, halo 4, nor halo 5's multiplayer will ever be able to match it. And to be honest, one of the things i liked about halo 3's campaign was the bigger open levels. Lastly, i personally liked the brutes better, and their weapons and vehicles and i think they should return in some way in halo 6.
@Raycevick8 жыл бұрын
Why not compare them? It's obvious Guardian is made to be Halo 3's equivalent of the map, and I say in the video it's one of my favorites as well. Also "The reason you often hear that halo 3 is the best, is simply because it was," is a sentence that for a writer like me is sacrilege. What if instead of listing all of Halo 3's pros and cons I ended it as "it's just the best"? The greatest failing of a critic is when they say something is perfect and don't explain why.
@zackhernandez16878 жыл бұрын
I don't feel like guardians aesthetic or layout is to be compared to any map in halo 2 at all, that's why you shouldn't compare them. And while I liked your video for the most part, it just bugged me when you started bashing on halo 3's maps when clearly(in my opinion) they are the best. Also, I never said that halo 3 is perfect and I'm glad you pointed out its cons, I just think that some of the "cons" you picked weren't cons at all.
@Raycevick8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Because you don't personally feel like Guardians is comparable to Lockout, that means I shouldn't? You can't just say maps in Halo 3 are clearly best without anything else to backup that claim.
@zackhernandez16878 жыл бұрын
the backup on that claim is simply the amount of fun I had on those maps compared to halo 2 maps, it's just my opinion. some people think halo 4 has some of the best maps, and while I completely disagree, it's their opinion. Also my first comment on this video was mostly opinionated. you should make more videos like this though.
@UrbanTheMyth8 жыл бұрын
Gaurdian is a lockout clone but it was the most inovative lockout clone. Ok, clone may be a bit much but the layout is incredibly similar and it served a similar purpose that lockout did. That's why people compare the two. I prefer guardian but I won't deny its heavy inspiration from lockout.

Before stats went dead I had like 1.5k ranked and social games and 4.5k custom games. I'd put like a week into a single map in forge. Then 343s like "Players want halo to be more like cod" and they completely ruined infection and took objects out of forge that we needed for a lot of custom games. Not to mention they made vehicles feel like they're made of glass. If they really want to save the franchise, they need to make it so people can actually play customs again. Plus they need some kind of plot where Cortana, Arby n Chief rek all these new characters and then go back to the same old shit as before.

17:20 I like your review, but come on. You played Halo 2, right? She rushes after a Capitol ship all by herself into unknown space, starts a war on a ring she just discovered, goes after the Index personally (almost dies doing that), then parkours her way to the index to deactivate Halo. Yes, she is definitely set up to be reckless. She left her frigate unguarded over a flood controlled part of the ring and led to the total flood consumption of High Charity. So yes, I do find it quite believable that she would crash a pelican into the tower and try and take on the prophet single handedly right before the Ark was activated. Throughout Halo 2 and 3, she's constantly trying to be a hero, like her father. It makes perfect sense for her to do what she did. I'm only surprised that she somehow didn't die sooner. I think the simple fact that her last name is Keyes should be more than enough context to tell players that she's going to get herself killed.
@brennan17032 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment but Ive gotta respond. Miranda is not reckless, just ambitious/doing what it takes. She rushes off after truth in 2 AFTER hood gave the order and she knew it held a high prophet, someone integral to the covenant. She doesn't start an all-out war in the ring and stays low-profile, never engaging the covenant with her ship, and as we know the only troops really deployed was the chief going down with a single group of odsts and occasionally gets some marine support. She personally goes after the index with an entire platoon of marines and Johnson, a spartan 1 and whose encountered the flood before. Her, Johnson, and a single squad of marines remained before they got offed by the arbiter The only thing that she did that was obviously reckless was parkour through the firing area of the ring. In Halo 3, flying a pelican through a glass window with an entire army waiting on the ground was stupid, she could've easily loaded chief, arbiter, and other forces onto her pelican and crash through, but Bungies storytelling intelligence in 3 is subpar at best

As someone who loves this game with all of my heart it’s refreshing to hear someone be very unbiased in a critique of it. I also appreciate your defense of Arbiter’s use in this game. A lot of fans of the character claim he was sidelined in this game but I disagree, he’s with you for most of the game and I really like how they made him into a co-op character that alters cutscenes and story moments to fit that mode. I love fighting alongside him in Halo 3 and he actually becomes more of his own character rather than just an avatar for the player which is what he kind of is for most of Halo 2 outside of cutscenes.

On the "Flickering Lady" part: There's a good fan idea out there that theorizes the Gravemind is sending the transmissions to mess with the Master Chief's head. This might explain why the Chief's vitals pinged "KIA" at the beginning of the game, and the Cortana transmissions have some similarities to the Gravemind transmissions on the infected High Charity. I like this theory because the Flood is related to the Precursors. They had this ability called "Neural Physics", and it enabled the Precursors to manipulate the fabric of the universe. Now, the Gravemind is not completely Precursor, so he doesn't have all of their abilities. He may have retained some form of Neural Physics, though. There's a good Halopedia article on the Precursors, I encourage you to check it out if you're interested in Halo lore.

Very well made video with a lot of solid points. Halo 3 is still my favorite halo game closely followed by reach. I definitely agree with the bit about deaths. I didn't even remember miranda keyes death because it wasn't pulled off very well and she was such a minor character. If she had came in with multiple marines to back her up like a full on assault maybe it would be more memorable. They pulled off the sergeant johnson death quite well in my opinion. It made me cry because of the bond chief had with him and the only other game that made me cry like that was Dom's death in Gears of war 3

Damn good video, but there's still things I disagree with: - The Ark was my most favourite Halo 3 Campaign mission. Massive vehicular sandbox coupled with lengthy level designs made you feel like it brought the "campaign" to Campaign. The Covenant with 2 Scarabs could had been the first, but its pacing back and forth didn't work out so well with me. - BR is still jack of all trades. If the Halo 3 Beta Carbine (which fired faster at 7 headshots to kill) was unchanged and if the Pistol was at least Halo 5's standards, the sandbox would had been better. You may argue that the Pistol needed to be dual-wielded because reasons, but heck. The Needler was dual-wieldable in Halo 2 but no longer in Halo 3, and it's for the better. - Sandbox redundancy & dual-wielding: SMG, Plasma Rifle & Spiker were all copy & pastes. Dual-wielding especially when compared to Reach & Halo 5's sandbox was really a bad move. - Blackout, Heretic & Avalanche weren't horrible remakes though. But other than that, many of Halo 3's maps were forgettable and visually bland.

27:33 Gotta go with the crowd here and say that your assessment of the Halo 3 maps were off, not slightly but also not completely. And I'll breakdown every map assessment so that it's easy to follow, for myself to read back, for you to read, and for anyone reading this: "Guardian, while great, really is Lockout 2.0." If Guardian is Lockout 2.0, then Lockout is Hang Em High 2.0. Plus, there's already a Lockout 2.0 in Halo 3 and it's called Blackout. Guardian and Lockout/Blackout are entirely different, not only in terms of level design but also the atmosphere of the level. Lockout is a snowy map and has 4 clear, main crossmap areas: BR Tower, Sniper Tower, Top Blue (Lift), and Library (the area directly and far across from Top Blue). Guardian is a Foggy, Jungle, and Forerunner map and has 2 clear, main crossmap areas: Top Gold (Lift) and Sniper Tower. And what I mean by clear, main crossmap areas is that these are areas where players tend to be and take aim at, compared to other areas of the map. Although Guardian does have 2 other crossmap areas (Top Green/Blue Entrance), they don't offer as much of an overview/overwatch of the map, thus any players in those areas are prone to getting killed more easily, or not getting many kills from (compared to being at Sniper Tower or Top Gold). Also, the Sniper spawns: On Lockout, the Sniper spawns at the top of the tower whereas on Guardian the sniper spawns at the lower part of the tower. And all of these are just the surface level differences; there are hundreds of halo map experts/pros who could breakdown every aspect that makes Guardian substantially different from Lockout, in terms of presentation, design, and gameplay. "Narrows might just be the simplest map in a halo game, in terms of layout." You must be forgetting Halo 2 maps like Foundation, Elongation, and Colossus (or Warlock, a map remake of Wizard from CE but we'll get to remakes later). Which honestly, I don't see the problem with a simple map layouts. If a simple map works, then there shouldn't be an issue, and if there is an issue, then the problem just might be another aspect of the map that doesn't relate to the map layout's simplicity. It might lie in the player or weapon spawns. "The Pit is a perfectly symmetrical map for traditional competitive play." All I heard was praise from this...unless the problem is a traditional competitive format. If that's the problem, then how and why? "High Ground's experimental concepts were abandoned to repeat one that was already seen with Zanzibar" Again, missing the problem with the map here. I will say, spawning on the beach side of the map as opposed to the base side can be a bit of a struggle if you don't know how to approach the base from the beach. But a map with similar spawn disadvantage is Halo 2's Ascension where players can spawn at the edge on each side of the map wide open to sniper/BR fire from either tower areas. Or, a map that actually has a base on one side and nothing on the other, Containment. "Bungie released an alternate version of Epitaph called Epilogue with different weapon layouts to account for imbalances with the shotgun and bubble shield." So it's a weapon spawn issue, not a map issue? Definitely factoring in elements that don't relate to the actual map design/layout and using that as a reason why it is not a good map compared to halo 2 maps...which those elements and factors are irrelevant. "The rest of the maps either share an unoriginal or bland layout in design, or are directly taken from previous maps." The same can be applied to Halo 2 maps, whether it's in terms of assets from within Halo 2 such as fusion coils, or actual map remakes. "Blackout is Lockout...but worse." If that's the case, then Halo 2's Warlock is Wizard...but worse. "Avalanche is Sidewinder...but worse." Beaver Creek is Battle Creek...but worse. "Cold Storage is Chill Out...but worse." Tombstone is Hang Em High...but worse. "Last Resort is Zanzibar...but worse." Coagulation is Blood Gulch...but worse. "Heretic is Midship...but worse." This is where Halo 3 has one more remake than Halo 2, but you all get the idea what I'm going for with these remake comparison rebuttals. "Valhalla is Blood Gulch...but...ok though still unremarkable." Again, like Guardian, a halo 3 map that is very different from a map from a previous halo game. Also, unremarkable? I can say the same thing about Halo 2's Relic map. "Assembly is an aborted fetus of Warlock and Midship." Halo 2's Backwash map...nuff said. "Construct far too often becomes more about camping lifts." Relic has plenty of camping as well, whether it's by the rocks or by the center structure. "Citadel may just be the laziest map to ever be released in a halo game." Turf looks like it was an area that was removed from the first mission that takes place on Earth in the Halo 2 campaign; it's not that creative or elaborate in comparison to Citadel. "Foundry is either an empty canvas we had to pay money for or a horrible layout that you could wipeout." I'm pretty sure that was the point; perhaps you missed this feature called Forge? Maybe I'm trippin'...maybe back then nobody ever used that feature, no websites were created due to that feature, no machinima ever benefited from it. Just a forgotten mode, I guess. "Ghost Town belongs in a Call of Duty game with its too many bumps and cracks in the level's geometry that interfere with the player's ability to effectively aim and maneuver." Same could be said about Turf, with how small and non-existent jumping is needed for the map; a remake of turf in Call Of Duty would be a natural fit. Hell, any halo 2 map would fit in CoD4 with Halo 2's faded color scheme and dim lighting. "Isolation was probably taken over by artists who thought they were designers when actually they just made a gimmick map without an interesting gimmick." Halo 2's Backwash map...again, nuff said. "Longshore...not bad or great...it's bland...the same can also be said for Orbital..." Longshore is probably the worst halo 3 map and is probably the equivalent to Halo 2's backwash. But, Orbital is on par in blandness to Burial Mounds. "Rat's Nest...not very interesting gameplay...run the flag down the middle for better cover and team help, which discourages the use of vehicles (which the vehicles make the map more fun)." Is every map assessment based upon CTF and Slayer? If so, that's not a very good justification for your judgement/dismissal of all these maps since other modes and game aspects are considered. What about modes like Team Swat and Team Snipers? Team Doubles? What about Lone Wolves? CTF and Slayer were no longer the priority when it came to H3 multiplayer because of the variety of additional game modes that were added to the game, as well as the endless possibilities that the players could create with the game options and Forge mode. The fact that Halo 3 offers endless creations, whether it'd be game modes, custom maps, screenshots which acted as memes before memes were a thing, Theater mode that helped in creating machinimas, makes it objectively (yes I said it) better than any other halo game. But you didn't stop here, so let's keep going. "Sandtrap's only saving grace are the elephants, other than that it's a map that's gotten it's best usage out of machinimas, not big team battle matches with a flat layout and a sniper rifle that is far too easy to camp spawns from." Addressed this in previous quote; it's not always big team battle or team slayer; this has no relevance since it's not a problem in modes like SWAT or Team Snipers. "Sandbox's default layout is somehow even worse than Foundry's." Somehow "worse" because it made for even more possibilities for map creators and game mode creations. Which by the way, it was 3 maps in one: there was a basement level, the surface level (which the default map was created around), and a sky level. Raycevick definitely coming off as a default skin halo player out here. "Snowbound is...well...'stupid fucking snowbound'." I appreciate the Master Chief sucks at Halo reference...but that's about it. It's as good a map as any of Halo 2's decent maps, such as Containment. "Standoff is decent for CTF matches, but for team deathmatch it has the same problem as Foundation in halo 2 where the default weapon doesn't have enough range to make battles interesting and the battle rifle has too much range, degenerating into a boring, stop and pop cover shooting like gears of war." Kind of just proved my point in this whole thing of Halo 3 maps being on par if not better than Halo 2 maps with this comparison: Standoff = Foundation "Wow...that's every single map in the game, and I dismissed all of them with a sentence or paragraph. I certainly didn't have this issue with Halo 2." Allow me to reply to this pretentious quote with an equally pretentious quote: "the ability to speak does not make one intelligent". There is definitely some bias in your assessment of the halo 3 maps, which isn't very noticeable throughout the assessment but is definitely present in this concluding statement, which is odd since your videos are usually not as bias as this one. And "dismissing" each map is a very far-fetched term for you to use since for most of the maps you gave no elaboration as to why they are bad, or worse than halo 2 maps.

JJAB91 The Act Man has a series that breaks down Halo 5's campaign. I will say I really enjoy Halo 5's arena gametypes and think the multiplayer gameplay has improved from Reach and Halo 4, but it's campaign/story, introduction of microtransactions (affecting warzone), weak armor customization/unlock system, awful random unlocking of req packs, lack of content at launch, and others contribute to its criticisms. However, even though forge released several months after release, they did a phenomenal job with it.
@Luissv728 жыл бұрын
in my mind Forge was literally the only improvement the game had in any way (do realize i'm working with a limited frame of reference as I played the game very little compared to the others and it stands as the only Halo I've never purchased myself. Also very little doesn't say much because I played Halo 3 almost every day for at least 2 hours (more than likely over 4 or 5 from 2007-2009). The campaign was arguably the worst in the series (4 in the only other contender), the multiplayer felt generic and as if it attempted to strip the most of what it could from the old Halos with a art style that makes me want to vomit, shitty abilities that mad the game so much less competitive with the sprint still in place (always will hate it) and the retarded ground pound, ADS, and dear God, Warzone. Generally the game is just kind of a complete piece of shit and needs to be burned. 4 isn't much better either

the subtle story telling he talks about around 10 minutes is what i really miss from games. It is not shoved down your throat, but there is still plenty there. it gives re-playabilityand it makes the game itself feel way more rewarding and deep. Somewhere not long after Halo 3, gmes started to imitate movies for some reasons, and this is a big mistake. it removes the advantages that the media of video games has in that you are playing and controlling it. i rather dislike how cinematic games are now, with game play just something that happens between cutscenes... Why did it happen? suddenly every game is doing it like that now. almost no games are capitialising on the fact they are games, and can tell their story in way different more interesting and interactive ways which movies absolutely cannot do. it sucks. sure you have to listen a bit more in some cases, but usually, as with Halo 3, and gears of war 1, for examples at that time period, it was easy enough to absorbe it through the gamepaly alone still. there was jsut more for people who explored a bit more.

VeNoMz I'd still say Halo 3 had the best multi-player due to forge allowing and introducing us to many things even outside of competitive play. Including grifball, hard puzzle maps where you win Recon armor or other things, fun zombie maps, etc. If it wasn't for forge I would not have loved Halo as much as I did, ending up with 300k downloads from content I made myself. Halo 2 was my first but not my favorite because of that. I even was friends with the guy that made Onslaught and Amplified and a couple maps on Reach. The community made the best out of what was given, which is what I loved about that game. It gave Halo 3 a big advantage in the community for tuning maps, especially for competitive play.

Suzerain In 2008, I was able to get it for free. I don't know if you had to pay in 2007, but this is the only map pack that I got for free.

This retrospective look at the Halo series is something I have to genuinely thank you for. I've always known that they were a huge factor in my love of gaming, but remembering just how long ago they came out is really helpful in understanding my expectations, loves, and disappointments of games today.

I still think its dumb, but the game gives an explanation to why keyes flew into the building. At the start of the cutscene she asks how close they are and chief looks up the elevator shaft and says "not close enough" so keyes bursts through to try to stop it.

Halo 3 remains my favorite multiplayer suite by a long shot, though I will concede especially upon review that it's maps weren't as well matched to it's gameplay as halo 2's were to its. However, I still feel the actual gameplay itself in H3 was vastly superior even with the disconnect between the gameplay and the maps. Its fun to look back on H2 and remember all of the advanced maneuvers and combos that made you feel you were playing at an exceptionally high skill level, but in more serious retrospect they more largely functioned as an unnecessary entry barrier that, as you alluded to, broke the game down into the same exact strategies and weapon (singular) every time. I legitimately felt that I could make every weapon and 80% of the equipment work in H3 at some point, and as such gameplay changed on the fly in a way that H2 never achieved. It led to fantastic hectic moments where improvisation and tactic were more important than a static "who can 4 shot better under pressure" in every single scenario, and I much more fondly remember triple rolling a warthog, jumping out and dual wielding spikers into quickly switching to a shotgun while throwing down a regen whilst jumping over a narrowly missed blast from a spartan laser than I do twitching left and right at random intervals while rhythmically pulling a trigger on lockout.
