I remember reading the Halo novel Bad Blood actually and its an immediate follow up of what happens as soon as Halo 5 ended through the eyes of Buck gathering his squad back up from ODST. At the beginning of the novel where they bring Blue team back to the arbiters camp with them, there's actually a whole section that mentions Chief and Arbiter basically walk off together away from everyone and begin to reminisce together on what all happened. They literally spend the whole entire night together just talking until sun up. I think it's safe to say they're friends.

There's also a moment in "Shadows of Reach" where John is killing a bunch of Banished warriors, and for a moment he stops himself from vilifying their entire separate species because he recognizes that he fought alongside many noble aliens like Arbiter. The rest of Blue Team didn't have that perspective, so they're understandably not in the same mindset as he is. It's just nice to know that John felt guilt for thinking of painting their entire species in that light after meeting Thel. In my opinion, Thel is the only one in the best position to lead and redeem things. Progress has to start somewhere, no matter how small and no matter how controversial.

The big giveaway that they are friends is when Chief lets the Arbiter kill the Prophet of Truth. The head nod he gives him right after is a sign of respect and understanding. At that point Chief had already took the life of a high prophet (Regret) for humanity, the flood had taken one (Mercy) , and now chief was allowing his "friend" to take one for the sangheili. By allowing the Arbiter the glory of the kill and giving him that nod of respect while understanding the importance of the kill to his friend made it clear that they are truly good friends.

The names of the Prophets are supposed to be in reference to their character. Regret was the one who essentially initiated the Human-Covenant war by not telling the Covenant that these humans were the Forerunner's chosen and instead telling them that humanity was the enemy. He had no regrets about causing this genocide despite humanity's clear connection to the Covenant's religion. And of course he regretted going to Earth before the fleet was ready to do so. Mercy was obviously the most religious of the three. According to the backlore, he was first to know that humanity were the Reclaimers, not the enemy. Obviously coming from a religious perspective, he would have shown them mercy? Nope. He showed no mercy. Also bonus points for Chief showing him mercy by killing the Infection form before it infected him. Truth, as you said, lied about the entire thing. Not only did he lie about Humanity (the others were also responsible for this), but he also lied directly to the Arbiter. He was the one who wanted the Arbiter to continue serving (as he said, "the terms of your execution are up to me"), so he lied to everyone about who caused Halo's destruction, he lied about the Heretics and the reason they rebelled, he lied to the entire Covenant during High Charity's takeover by suggesting the Elites shot first... and of course he lied about the religion, the Prophets before /may/ have had an excuse of not talking to the Monitor inside the Dreadnought.

Buck Forgave the Elites because the Master Chief did. He is, or rather was, one of a small number of ODSTs that respected the Spartans. Buck spoke well of Noble 6 to Jun, so he understands the stakes. he is also a practical man, and puts blame where it lies. The Elites were willing to fix their mistake, and the Prophets were the ones who deserve most of the blame, so Buck assigned them the blame. He also lost The Rookie and Mickey to the Insurrection, so he hates them Far More than the Elites.

That nod, I believe, was their way of saying it was good to put their differences aside and fight alongside each other. They knew there was a possibility that one, if not both, would not make it out of the blast radius. 4:36 For me, it wasn't the nod itself that was significant; It was the fact that Chief briefly stopped running to look if the Arbiter was alright after the tank slid in his direction. When you're on a place that's seconds away from self-destructing, you don't stop for someone unless they mean something to you. He could've simply kept on running to get the ship in the air, not caring about the Arbiter's state, in order to maximize his chances of survival. Due to their respective personalities, I doubt they would be the kind to "hang out" together. But the two obviously have each other's back. The Arbiter is simply more vocal about it.

I got that too as Chief is a man of few words but when he does talk he has wisdom and confidence in his heart and is a good soul. He was willing to throw his differences away with Arbiter and they became allies by fate or coincidence as the game went on we saw them build trust between each other and I know Chief was watching Arbiter getting ready to kill Truth and for him that was hard to do considering this Prophet was kinda like a father figure to him and a mentor with thier religion and to see all of it was a lie really hurt Arbiter and Chief knew it was hurting him the whole time and decides to let Arbiter have his vengeance

I think that Chief considers Thel a friend. Not nearly as close as he does Blue Team, Johnson or Cortana, but still very close despite them being former enemies. John never really had a personal hatred for the Covenant. He just killed because it was what he was raised to do. I think you can see that the Arbiter regards Chief as a brother like he would R'tas or another Sangheili is at the end of the mission Cortana where you're escaping and Cortana says "Who would be crazy enough to come in here?!" Then when she sees the Arbiter she says "You two made up?" Of course you have the famous nod at the end of Halo 3, but even at the end of Halo 5, Thel looks like he's in shock at seeing Chief alive. Chief was always more stoic than Thel, but I think it's apparent both have a very strong bond given what the two have been through together.

gman57op, maybe so but let's not forget Chief was raised off war games, military history, and statistics. He would not need to watch videos to see what the Covenant is doing. He was on the battlefield fighting them quite often. Also in Halo 4 the epologe Master Chief admits, in his own way, he felt more like a machine than a human. Driving a rift between the idea that he was indeed human he would not identify them as his own as he would do Spartans, and even then I would limit it to Spartan 2s and maybe 3s as the ones kept from the large mass suicide missions had Spartan 2 characteristics. Hate is a human emotion. Machine's can't register that. I'm not calling Chief a machine but Chief is unlikely to understand the emotion well enough to truly push it to an entirety of a species. Sure he can hate the banner the species is under but I find it unlikely Cheif would kill an entire species out of hate.

Something that is often overlooked in terms of why people feel less satisfaction in games such as Halo 5: Guardians as opposed to previous titles, is that certain elements that were once present have been either altered or removed entirely from the series. This has affected many games, not just Halo. Factors such as the gameplay or story take the grunt of the blame for why there was a lack of enjoyment in the experience (which in the case of Halo 5: Guardians' story is of valid relevance) but is not necessarily the only important factor. In previous Halo titles, players observed various elements of the games that resonated with them and became a core aspect in their experience. Elements such as the music, environments and visual presentation. Personally, I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and expansive design seen in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, the beautiful and natural appearance of Halo 3, and the dark yet calm mood of Halo 3: ODST (not to mention the amazing soundtrack.) These such elements are a large part of why many people love Halo, and many of these elements may not initially be noticeable to many. But once those elements are altered or removed, the experience is changed. An example of this change is present in the art style, which has gone from having a natural, gritty tone to having a glossy, artificial manner. The environments seen in Halo: Reach are some of the most impressive to appear in a Halo game, whereas the environments seen in Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians often lack in general comparison. We saw various similarities with these elements to recent previous titles such as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary (Campaign and Multiplayer), specifically the environmental design and music. Unfortunately, this is only as a result of product mimicking due to remastering. However, this proves that these elements are not lost or forgotten, but are simply not present currently. In my opinion, these such elements are of specific importance and are a special part of the experience which need to be implemented again somehow in future games. #haloclub

I believe they're friends without a doubt. Does the Arbiter feel some kind of guilt? I believe so after what he's done to the human race during his campaign. The chief have been raised to kill but arguably that was already in his blood, he was a born fighter. Growing up durring his training chief is about accomplishing the mission, no one dies and no one gets left behind. In the movie Halo Fall of Reach Sam narrates and tells us exactly how chief operates. "The thing about John is that he really only knew 3 ways to react to people; if you were a superior, he obeyed you. If you were in his squad, he'd die for you and if you were a threat then God help you." Was Arbiter and enemy at one point, yes but I don't believe John is one to hold grudges. We havnt seen any evidence proving otherwise that he does. Plus if there is any doubt the Arbiter whole heartedly sees John as a friend where they wouldn't have a drink together then it may be a cultural thing or feels guilt. #TheyreFriends #Brothers #Allies

Friendship is a luxury that few leaders are ever granted. As they say, heavy is the head that wears the crown. Chief and Arbiter are both the apex predators of their entire races. The greatest of their kind. And they both carry the weight of the world on their shoulders because of it. The Arbiter is one of the only friends Master Chief ever could have. And the Master Chief is one of the only friends the Arbiter could ever have. I'm glad the story allowed their character arcs to cross the way they did. There's something very honorable about two great warriors developing this kind of respect for one another.

I’ve always seen the relationship between the Arbiter and Chief as a sort of chivalrous alliance. They look at each other the same way two knights would perceive a foe turned ally. The Two knights would have to earn each other’s respect somehow. For the Arbiter he already knew of Chief and his many feats so he already respected Chief. Chief however had no real respect for the Arbiter at first due to him just being another elite in Chiefs eyes. However as Halo 3 progresses Chief and the Arbiter aid each other and help each other. I do think they’d share a beer. They’d be willing to fight side by side any day.

I love this topic, all the evidence has always pointed it out to me! Before I even watched the video, that quote the Arbiter said in Halo 5 about him calling Chief friend was the first thing I thought of. And with the modicum of respect and the reciprocal nod toward one another, it's blatantly clear they are friends. Apart from the murder of Truth, I think there was proof of their friendship when they stood at eachother's backs and Thel said "We trade one villain for another". I never really understood the meaning of that phrase but I sense that this was one moment the friendship solidified. Not only this, but the respect that the Arbiter has always had was evident when he told Chief after Johnson died "I am sorry, Spartan... But come."

Playing through the games on legendary, you see almost every single one of the marines die, or as arby you see the same with grunts and most elites. Okay. First thing's first. MONOPOLY DECIMATES FRIENDSHIPS! It would NOT be fun to watch them play... Now...the nod... I originally thought it was simply an "order" based on the circumstances: "I'll be fine. Go." Get to the bridge, or observation deck, or somewhere that the internal atmosphere will not be exposed to like here...Looking back, I can see why this might not have been 117's meaning. The airlock was open in the cutscene, but if the Arbiter had stayed, I think Cortana would've closed it, but the cinematic would've lost its effect, and so it had to remain open. With Arbiter NOT in a suit, he would die. The Arbiter was going to the door for safety either way. Chief was staying to start up the Dawn ASAP (no travel) and so would stay. The nod was that of a "We're good. Thanks." and "I'm glad. And thanks to you." as they parted. I think it was to them only temporary as the escape would've allowed them to actually speak later, but in case something went wrong, they made it known immediately. This video made me look back and critique a decade's worth of opinion. I'm glad I watched it!
