In Halo The Flood, there is a chapter about YapYap and his team of grunts coming across an injured elite while storming a UNSC ship, I believe it was the Pillar of Autumn, and then realizing that it would take the entire team to carry the elite. So while the grunts hated elites, carrying the injured commando out would allow them to get out of fighting and more than likely dying. Pretty smart thing to realize, regardless of its cowardliness

Also, grunt populations were heavily controlled as far as mating and reproduction. It talks about it in The Cole Protocol. Just a few years without the regulations of the covenant, a grunt population grew into multiple hundreds of thousands

This is hard on the Elite minors too. Imagine you are an Elite minor leading a team of 6 Grunts and 4 Jackals. Grunts are child soldiers, Jackals are sneaky opportunists, and basically it’s just yourself fighting a team of well equipped humans.

Buuuut even the worst equipped of you has a freakin' plasma pistol! Those things are amazing. Imagine them realistically portrayed. You send a few shots down chamber and your target is now on fire and is actually melting on the points of impact. Plasma is hot enough to set anything on fire- it breaks down and burns water vapor, and any water in the local tissue. Now imagine an overcharged shot hitting someone. Even if they're wearing the titanium armor from the games, it's now glowing hot and melting, cooking the wearer unless they remove it fast enough. The covenant are pretty freakin' OP. Elites are cocky for a reason

I remember reading one of the Halo books; Halo CE time frame- Master chief a midst a battle with the covenant, a grunt got the jump on John and ended up ripping the helmet off his MJOLNIR armor, the master chief himself underestimated the grunt's strength and one almost ended up killing him.

From my first encounter of the grunts in ce they where and still are my favorite alian race and I always felt bad killing them because there so lovable. When you're on the battlefield and you kill a grunt and he says "you killed my daddy" and then runs a you with to plasma balls about to explode, it's heart breaking.

7 is anything from stone age to before the first factories 6 is industrial era. 5 is atomic age. 4 is where the Kig-yar where at when humanity was discovering gunpowder. 3 is where humanity was from halo CE to halo 3. 2 is where the covenant where from halo ce to halo 3 1 is where the forerunners where at. tier 0 exist because only the precursors where ever more advanced then the forerunners and they don't count because they are dead. tier -1 doesn't exist because technology is based on a understanding of the laws of physics, not achieving some magic to go beyond them.

'Grunts never proved a challenge' tell that to my friend; there were 3 of us in a legendary difficulty firefight, myself and my other friend (say friend number 2) had both been killed by a mixture of brute chieftains and swarms of suicide grunts but, there were only 3 enemies left before the end of the wave - 1 elite and 2 grunts, so of course my friend beats the elite to death (because why waste ammo at that point) and loses most of his energy shield in return, then the penultimate grunt routs and runs around the corner of a building so my friend chases it and - just as he turns the corner - runs slap bang into the last grunt, standing less than a metre away. This last Grunt had a fuel rod cannon. So, in less time than it took to say 'OH SHI' we were reloading back to the previous checkpoint. Moral of the story is, don't underestimate anything with a fuel rod cannon.

Probably a little smarter than most but some in the books or things I've read about are defiantly smarter than me, and some are braver. What you were talking about with them advancing on your own is kind of what happens in fan RP I'm in with an independent faction of Unggoy who freed themselves from the Covenant (via a local rebellion and then fleeing deep into space, and since they were Unggoy, the Covenant though "oh their only a couple Hundred puny Unggoy, what harm could they do?") and advanced with their own tech and get some pretty cool stuff. My character in the RP is defiantly smarter than me. He can Speak English, Sangheili, Huragok Sign Language, Native Unggoy, Russian, German, and a few other languages. He also was the Unggoy who started and led that particular Uprising. This RP is run in Spore, (Yes, as in EA 2008 Spore, we are still here!) and it's called the BWP RP. I used to love the grunts back in 7th and 8th grade. I used to talk like them, pretend to be them, and write stories about them. Over the first months of 8th grade, after 2 previous failed attempts, I wrote a 20,000ish word story about a grunt named Flick who lead a grunt rebellion against the covenant. After watching this video 6 years later I suddenly realize why these little methane breathing arthropods were my favorite part of the Halo games. I was bullied in 6th and 7th grade and I must have subconsciously empathized with the plight of the grunts. Anybody who got bullied as a kid or as a teenager knows how it is...Long live the grunts! I still love you guys.
