Keelbug: originally planned to be a ambient life that would fly in and "cut up" bodies hauling them away. a way to remove clutter without having to rely on load zones or setting bodies to despawn after X ticks. Engine limitations led to it's scrapping Engineer: Originally designed as a neutral covenant creature thats entire purpose was to "repair" vehicles. Supposedly the covenant vehicle health in combat evolved is a hold over from this system. Juggernaut: Designed as a mini boss of the flood. The player was meant to first fight this as the arbiter in the chapter "Juggernaut". Once defeated, flood in the area were meant to go "inert" as the juggernaut more or less acted as a central computer for the various forms in the region. Cut due to engine limitations. As a developer, seeing some of these enemies and their actions and ideas for what they'd do, or their size/stature/height, etc... I'm just thinking ya... I think I know why that got dropped. Small ones like the porky and reach squirrel aside, many of them would be serious pains to make worth with existing levels and path finding, and many also would have huge issues for their AI that was very much different from the normal behavior tree most enemies have. Sure, most would be possible... but only with a lot of extra work, and often requiring changes to levels and environments to support them that might interfere with other things or mess up the desired play spaces. And then ones like the giant transport. You have a massive flood, that's still a softish target so not armored and just a bullet sponge. A huge bullet sponge, that or too easy of a kill. It only works in very limited large open areas to get around, and it requires corpses, or other AI to die in that open area too. That conflicts with marine and elite AI for example, often sticking by rocks or cover opposite the open area with hostiles. And then there's the question of how fast it is, does it sprint really fast to get around to each corpse and start the conversion? And if it doesn't how long would it take to move around giving you how much time to kill it? And also very important for game play is where do you space this? It's big and tough, so you need lots of ammo, or rockets or other power weapons to put it down, yet it's unlikely to drop any ammo itself upon death. And it brings up more enemies that also probably are melee only without ammo or weapon drops. So it's a potential hole in their plans for player resource management. And lastly, the flood are by their very name, the flood. They are supposed to be numerous, giant bulky boss units makes them feel more in line with other factions who also have vehicles. And this unit is arguably redundant anyway. I mean it's a coolish sounding idea but pointless when you think about it. It turns corpses in Flood combat forms? Well guess what unit already does that, is much smaller and wont cause any issues in level design, path finding, or ammo resource management to deal with and is already in the game? That's right, the simple humble infection form. Something that better "feels" like a flood unit, does the same job, and arguably better, all for so much less development time and far less restrictions on it's use in game. You'd barely get to use a giant thing like the transport given normal level designs, making it a super questionable investment of developer time if they did try to take all of these hurdles for it. Juggernauts, I kind of like them, but they also have some issues, not as many as some others, but still some issues. I'd say they could be like hunters though, in some limited environments that can fit them, but the problem is they are a giant tanky charger. No matter what they will just charge the player down, and the player either has environmental safe areas against them, or is ALWAYS running from them if faster, or if slower is forced to always kill them first or just die. It's not that fun of a combat loop compared to most others, and has issues with environmental design again. Compare these to the bigger flood combat forms of halo 3 that were more varied in nature, and could even turn into ranged turrets or stuff from a distance. Same role as the juggernaut in melee mode, but expanded to allow them to be more flexible and give the player more options when dealing with them. Also still smaller so you can melee the head/body area, rather than just spindly legs that doesn't feel good when you get low on ammo and desperate. EDIT: Oh ya, and the keelbug... I love that one... in order to have fewer units and objects on the field in memory... you are adding additional units with complex pathfinding and their own separate AI system into the mix. They probably take a bit of time to fly in, grab or cut up a body, and leave... and leave to where? Won't even work in all environments like much of the forerunner facilities with doors probably... But this idea of spawning more enemies to let you not have as many enemies... unless they are really fast at their jobs it's just not worth it. And even if they are, that means fewer enemies allowed at any one moment, as these guys take a piece of the pie for units in play at a time. So big battles can't be as big. On the other hand... once a unit dies you can at least separate its AI and controller and destroy that, basically just leaving the mesh an textures behind, things probably already loaded in memory anyway from the others present still being fought. And by the time it launched, computers oculd handle more geometry with more memory and stuff so a few extra skeletal meshes just sitting around wasn't as concerning anymore, AI and physics and pathfinding still were, but they could be removed mostly when they died at least. And to top it off, they couldn't be used in the entire game, only a few areas, after all they couldn't be used inside many facilities, but also in areas with the flood as they'd likely keep the infection forms from doing their own thing, and seeing an organic flying unit would lore wise make people question why the flood don't infect them? Or why these things possibly would want to bring back flood bodies? Or maybe they do swap to an infected version part way through the game... still removes the bodies for the infectors either way. And all this just so they can manage aerial pathfinding, and a fairly different type from the banshee one. Trust me, they have their own special code for flying that is... special... it wouldn't work on fine movement and stuff like these bugs would need to enter and area close to obstacles, find a body, and then move right up to it before escaping (without clipping through everything at least).

You missed out some important bits of information: The Sharquoi (Drinol) is actually briefly mentioned in the little book that came with Halo 2 called "Conversations in the Universe" where two Elites are talking to each other about the humans. The creature is briefly mentioned by them in it. So really they are technically canon, just not truly featured yet. Also Halo Wars is the first game to introduce the Engineers as they use the original model that was to be in Halo 2 for them (Halo Wars 2's engineers are altered to be like the Halo 3: ODST version).. The Flood Juggernaut form does appear in a story from Halo: Evolutions called "The Mona Lisa" though it's a brief cameo. It is however the first official canon appearance of them. In Halo Wars 2 the Abominiation unit of the flood are evolved forms of Juggernauts according to their bio. As Fireteam Raven is a game that also features them it would imply that they are indeed part of the canon now.

I'd love to see the whole covenant armada be brought back halo 2 style (which is it just me or has infinite definitely gone a halo 2 route with a lot of things?). Enemy variety is important :)

I think that they’d be fine if it wasn’t a one hit kill, and if their aim was as bad as the Halo 4 Sniper Jackals.

The mention of the Alien trooper and mixing Hunter and Elite design elements makes me think of something... how about a Lekgolo suits? How they would work is anyone's guess, but they could be Lekgolo worms wrapped around a "host" and communicating with the "host" somehow to move fluidly, while granting heightened strength, speed, and a small amount of armor. Throw on some heavy armor, and boom, you have super Elites. Honestly, anything more to do with Lekgolo would be incredibly interesting, instead of just throwing them in the background each game and ignoring them. The potential they have is almost on par with the flood, which makes it such a shame they just show up as Hunters and Scarabs (and that one thing in Halo 5, whatever it was called). Goliath's and such in Halo Wars 2 is a good start, but there's so much potential for interesting designs. The skies the limit, since there's nothing restricting their design. They don't need to be designed with legs or arms, they can just be chucked into a suit and whatever that suit is is what the Lekgolo form looks like. Mini Scarabs that move around on legs with wheels with a forward facing Focus beam and guns built into the sides? Why not! A floating disc with guns in every direction that just shoot stuff? Go ahead! Think of basically any design imaginable, and with the Lekgolo it's possible. Hell, even Forerunner machines would only need a little tweaking to be pilotable by Lekgolo. Since Lekgolo swarms can just get dumped into a machine and the Lekgolo can operate it, they can use basically any machine like it's their own body, like a Scarab but in a different form. They could use lightweight designs to fly around like a Banshee without normal piloting restrictions, they can be put into anything. Honestly, any flying machines could have a Lekgolo swarm added into it and the result would be glorious. So many moving parts are possible that aren't with a normal pilot. The possibilities are so endless it's almost hard to think of specific examples because there's nothing to define what they COULD be, except needing space for the worms to occupy.

The Guta kinda feels like a reinterpretation of the Sharquoi with them both being beefy and hulking goliaths in comparison to the player.

You mentioned how one of the creatures (forget the name) may have been inspired by a creature from Marathon. I immediately was reminded of Hive Ogres from Destiny just based on how both looked. Might be interesting to expand on this topic to see if anything cut from Bungies tenure with Halo actually did make it to Destiny in some odd way.

In the Halo 2 Developer Commentary they mention that originally they were planning to have every Heretic be a Hunter! So that Alien Trooper concept being like a Hunter-Elite combination would make sense for that

2:18 That wouldn't be a parasite if it's HELPING the host. That would be a mutual symbiotic relationship. 10:42 I played a mod for Halo: Combat Evolved and on the last level there was a ridiculously confusing area where me and a friend spent at least 10 to 15 minutes trying to kill that fucker.

it was very odd but not really cause its an arcade game that fireteam raven had flood and that thing appeared. i know its a form that haunters become when infected but the fact that spart iv's where fighting it and the flood just blows my mind. and now it make sense! with the story and how the story progressed. honestly wouldnt be surprised when the flood gets to show up back in the main games.

I remember some commentary on the 3 legged creatures. I could be wrong, but I think they said that they were supposed to be snipers. They would be able to lean to one side on two of the legs, and kinda shift to the other side to a dodge counter sniping. My brain could be totally making that up. It was probably 10 years ago when I was watching that. Edit: Never mind, he covered that specific enemy later on the video.
