I think any other story line would've been better than the finished game's. But yes, I was genuinely interested in this one and looking forward to Halo 5 as a result. Too bad they ended up doing what they did.
@gametheory75336 жыл бұрын
The thing is, I actually really liked Halo 4's story and loved what 343i did with that. I was looking forward to a continuation of that story but with Halo 5 they decided to reinvent the franchise _again,_ and for me that was a massive miscalculation. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back.
@VeryDeathlyShiny6 жыл бұрын
Halo 5 wasn't a "bad game". It really wasn't. I liked the idea of the squad-based combat (yes, it could have been better but that's for another day). I think the biggest problem that H5 had was that all of the content released to tease the game essentially advertised a completely different story line than what shipped. I think that surprise is what made a lot of fans feel like there was a bait'n'switch.

To be honest I always saw the Spartan story the way it's depicted here. If you really think about what's described in the Eric Nylund books it's horrific. It surprises me how many fans just kind of look past it and see it all through the rose tinted glasses of the Spartan's themselves. I've even had debates with some of my friends because I assert that Master Chief is essentially brainwashed, living a miserable life that's been forced upon him but he's so indoctrinated he doesn't realize how miserable he is, but my friends see it the way the UNSC / ONI paints it: a hero who's been gifted these superpowers by ONI and is kicking ass saving the world and having a blast. :S

@@gametheory7533 I read all the books and what I fail to understand is that why is suddenly dr halsey the scapegoat for making the flash clones when oni top brass signed off on both the spartan 2 and 3 programs. Halsey wanted to give peace of mind to those families. The 140 clones engineered to die is horrific but so is 280 parents and more siblings never knowing or finding out and always wondering what happened. This was explored in glasslands book where a grown spartan naomi meets her father who always suspected oni kidnapped his daughter because he also found another parent whose boy was suddenly strange and sick. Fucking ONI man. Halsey killed clones because she tried to give the families closure, but they didn't have to sign off on it, and later take the high road of offloading the burden and responsibility to halsey alone.
@matchesburn4 жыл бұрын
@@kfj6709 I will never get this Halo community sentiment of apologizing and defending Halsey and the retconning to make the defense work. We've seen multiple times that Halsey had... issues... with identifing and empathizing with other people. And it wasn't until very, very late in the Spartan program that her tiny, minuscule, microscopic and atrophied conscience even decided to give the slightest hint of doubt. I don't think she's a full blown psychopath (By the way, if you're thinking the stereotypical Hollywood/media definition of psychopath to be "slash, hack, murder, wear fingers as a necklace type" - don't. Go by the medical and psychological definition of psychopathy which is much, much more nuanced and clear-cut. Fun Fact: there's many CEOs, scientists, politicians, ect. that are actually legitimate psychopaths and could potentially be diagnosed as such. And that's probably the reason WHY they are successful. And, ironically, psychopaths tend to be model prisoners when they are caught doing something because they know how to work and play with the system. They are smart individuals that also don't really care much about anything that isn't them. Sound familiar? It should, Halsey fits a lot of the prerequisites.), but she's... in the same vein. Just look at how god damn uncaring and blase she is with Noble team, including Jorge, in Halo: Reach. And, yes, yes, I'm sure I'll hear defenses of her behavior of "W-W-Well, she was stressed because... R-Reach was being invaded by the Covenant" or people not even noticing her behavior. I'm sorry, but no. This was not an isolated case. The woman was interested in science and technology. And the human children that were used for the SPARTAN-II were the means to experiment to advance that. Dr. Halsey is not this god damn tragic and sympathetic hero you lot want to make her out to be. Is ONI being duplicitous in trying to pin the blame on her? Of course! Does that somehow NOT make her the 26th century equivalent of Dr. Mengele? ...No. She is a guilty party and willfully and knowingly did... absolutely horrific things that were beyond illegal and did so, many times, eagerly and without a thought to anything but herself and the research. Stop. Defending. Her. There is a REASON why so many characters in the Halo universe absolutely despise Halsey - because she has been a despicable person.

Originally it was going to continue the story of Halo 4 and been about the Didact and Jul Mdama (which I would've been massively on board with). Yeah, I've never really heard any hugely negative reaction to HtT from fans. I will say, though, that one of the things that the awful Halo TV series has highlighted is how many Halo fans actually consider the UNSC to be "good guys." There's a million things wrong with the TV series, but the depiction of the UNSC is actually pretty accurate. But the amount of Halo fans who declared "They've made the UNSC out to be evil, but they're the good guys who saved the human race from the Covenant!" 🤦♂️ The UNSC have always been evil in Halo. Right back to the Fall of Reach days. You just don't see it in the games because the games are focused on the conflict with the Covenant and the UNSC are the military power fighting them. I hate to go to the Yazi comparison, but imagine if the Yazis succeeded in taking over the world, Wolfenstein style. They spend 50 years ruling the Earth with an iron fist. Then aliens invade Earth. Who's going to be humanity's best hope of defeating the aliens? The Yazis. Does that mean the Yazis are _good?_ Of course it doesn't. They would still be as evil as they ever were. The UNSC, and ONI who controls it, are an oppressive, authoritarian dictatorship that commits crimes against humanity on a daily basis. They also happen to control the largest, most powerful human military force in existence, which means they're the defacto prime candidates to defend the human race from a genocidal alien threat that wants to wipe out every human in existence. Evidently, a LOT of Halo fans have a hard time wrapping their heads around this. Their thought process seems to be "Covenant = Bad. UNSC fights Covenant, therefore UNSC = Good." This logic seems to be all too commonplace across society right now, sadly. So maybe that explains why some might dislike HtT. 🤷♂️
@hoemie25872 жыл бұрын
Yeah people don’t realize that there’s an actual reason why the innies exist in the first place lol they also forget that the Spartan program was initially created to deal with the innies. Which is really fucked when you consider how overkill they are against marines or even ODSTs. If the covenant hadn’t come into the picture just imagine how many war crimes the Spartans would have committed following ONI’s orders lol
@JadeRunner2 жыл бұрын
@@hoemie2587 Exactly, and even more screwed up when you consider that some of the Spartans _were_ Innies kidnapped from Innie colonies. I will say, though, that the Innies aren't exactly innocent victims, either. They blow up innocent civilians all the time without a shred of remorse, and some of their leaders are just as tyrannical as the UNSC. With all that in mind, Halo kind of qualifies as part of the Grimdark genre. None of the various factions are really "good," they're all shltty in their own way, whether it be the Covenant, UNSC, Innies, and now the Banished. Hell, even the Forerunners were pretty corrupt and brutal when they wanted to be. Shining through all that darkness, though, is the Master Chief's instinctual morality, his desire to do good, to protect others and help people whenever possible. I see Halo as a story of the best traits of humanity, that spark of light that religious people call divine, that atheists call the numinous, persevering against overwhelming darkness and ultimately triumphing. I also like how, as grim as the Halo universe is for being full of nothing but various horrible factions competing for power - and committing atrocities to each other as well as their own - it also depicts that within all these horrible factions, even the alien ones, there's still decent individuals trying to reach that light and do what's right. I waffled on a bit there.
@hoemie25872 жыл бұрын
@@JadeRunner oh definitely I’m not defending the innies I’m just pointing out that they are a product of the atrocities committed by the UNSC/ONI. You described the things I love in the halo universe perfectly. This is why I really really enjoyed hunt the truth because just by playing the games your kinda tricked into thinking the UNSC are “the good guys” when in reality nothing is black and white, just like real life. And they've gone far too long without oversight or checks of power and too far down the rabbit hole and justifying their continued escalation off the deep end by telling themselves that they know what they're doing and they're doing it for a good reason. And, at this point, the only reason why some in the UEF/UNSC don't just outright tear down ONI is because ONI has done such horrific and inexcusable shit that if even a small percentage of the truth of what they've done got out that most of human space would be at war so furiously that it would make the Insurrectionist War and Operation: TREBUCHET look like kids pulling each others hair and, also, pissing off huge swaths of the Elites that are going to want to go to war because of the underhanded shit that they were doing.
