In one of the first sentences that the actor says "It's about a soldier that is exploring his own identity and the effects of war" you instantly know that he doesn't understand Master Chief... Master Chief was selfless and nobody understands the effect of war quite like Master Chief does.

Halo is not about a soldier exploring his identity though; Halo is about a universal power struggle and man kind producing and conditioning men into becoming machine like soldiers named Spartans with master chief being the "chosen one" (Canon dictates he's just lucky but it gives off the vibe that he's somehow special amongst the Spartans).. Master chief knows who he is and he's out there to remind everybody else. Just to prove my point; They never remove master chiefs helmet because his true identity does not matter; the helmet sums up everything about him; a trained soldier with a passion for doing the right thing, his identity so to speak does not matter.

@@JM-Games Yes, you’re right about Masterchief not searching for his identity in the video games, he is just fighting the war. We hardly ever see him without his helmet on for 2 reasons: One, to have players project themselves onto him. Two, drive home, his identity as a product of the war, a supersoldier designed to fight for humanity. We never get the feeling that he has any detachment from this persona because the video games doesn’t try to explore that, also take into account that this is because the halo games aren’t meant to have character driven storylines, just characters reacting to an environment/event. This is common in FPS, action rpg & Hack n slash games. I’m not too familiar with the Halo comics, so I can’t say if they went into exploring Masterchief’s identity. The Tv series did pull more focus on introducing the audience to Masterchief and the rest of the ensemble contemplating their roles in the war & it’s effects on them, while having them react to their environment/events going on. So again, the actor understood the assignment of the script he was given. His Masterchief was still selfless & about the mission too. Also, I think the writers got the gist of what the theme of the video games but choose to implement it partially. The taking off of Masterchief’s helmet is obviously to give the actor physical credit, they do this in the mandalorian, in marvel movies & annoyingly with Dr. Fate in the Black Adam movie, which is why I’d argue that to preserve the ambiguity of Masterchief’s appearance, this Halo series should have been computer generated like Appleseed. Truth be told, you wanted a video game & that’s fine. The writers were not the best for this series, their dialogues were weak, choice in plot for S1 was nonsensical, some scenes could have been cut or reformatted to provide more information on the world/characters, most of the characters were boring to watch, they disregarded so much lore and failed to properly build the world of Halo to entice new and old fans. In conclusion, this show was a bad attempt but the actor did play his part well. It’s not his fault, if the Masterchief he portrayed was not the same as the video games. That was an artistic choice on the director & writers’ end.

@@reddishcarp1237 First, that’s not true. But second, what a shame it is that so few people did see it. Especially in 3D (it was actually shot using 3D cameras and every scene was meticulously planned to make good use of it, in a time where films started to get cheap and do 3D post-conversions that gave 3D a bad name). Dredd was a fantastic action film that’s deserving of a sequel, Karl Urban was great in the lead, and Alex Garland (who reportedly stealth directed this) is a talented writer/director (he wrote The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd and then began directing his scripts with the Oscar winning Ex Machina, the seriously underrated FX/Hulu original series DEVS, Men, and Annihilation). He even has a few games under his belt, like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC. (Continued…) Sadly, the marketing team failed Dredd and didn’t know how to sell it, and as a result, 99% of the people that DID see it will have missed out on seeing it in 3D as it was meant to be seen. At least he didn’t compromise and take the helmet off (and has a history of refusing to change the ending of Annihilation for example - to the point where the studio refused to give it a theatrical showing outside of the US and China where it went straight to Netflix everywhere else just so the studio could be petty).

I've never played the Halo video games, I don't know anything about the lore, but the way Master Chief is constantly taking of his helmet in like every scene in this show, it felt more like a running gag in a sitcom than anything else ...

In the games, he keeps his helmet on at all times and when it’s off, they never reveal his face. It adds to the mystery. One other thing I’d like to mention that doesn’t really get brought up is that Master Chief in the games is a very lonely character. Him always wearing his helmet is a way of saying that he doesn’t really have a connection with anyone outside of it. You notice these things through his awkward interactions with other people and his very anti-social nature. The funny thing is that the actor said they wanted to “humanize” him, but they could’ve just adapted this part of his character. It’s one of the things that makes his relationship with Cortana so powerful in the games.

Every cool scene is cut with him crying in the helmet or hit with a giant hammer with the most MC moment being written off as "CORTANA TOOK CONTROL". They wanted to make a Witcher or a Sonic while using nothing from the games or any other media and ended up assassinating the un killable covenant demon that took down 3 odst's as a child.

As a gamer who has loved and detested some of the franchise. I had excitement as a fan, but it grew to disappointment. Even casual gamers will tell you that Halo Wars and 3 had better pictures quality than this show.

I haven't seen this show, but I do think that it's funny that as the franchise continues to expand, Spartans get more and more human looking. The story used to harp on the genetic experimentation and augmentations that led to the creation of these 8 foot tall hulking behemoths. In the mini series Forward Unto Dawn, when they de-masked (except for Master Chief of course), they had pale dead eyes and thousand-yard stares. Now, between HALO 5 and this latest show...they're just kind-of tall people in heavy armor. Sometimes. Honestly, their sizes feel VERY inconsistent in this show given what I've seen in this video. At the end of the day, they might as well just be ODST's. And on a side note, compared to FUD, this new series looks very flat and cheap visually. Like a CW show.

The scene you are referencing from Forward Unto Dawn about Blue Team looking like some pale ass motherfuckers is because they are SPARTAN-II's and went through a more challenging augmentation. You start to see them looking normal in Halo: Reach because Noble Team were SPARTAN-III's - except Jorge. The reason for SPARTAN-III's looking 'normal' is because ONI wanted to create cheaper and more expendable SPARTANs. You can research the lore and find that over 500 III's were KIA throughout the Human-Covenant war, but less than 60 II's were killed. SPARTAN-IV's were created with volunteers which is why you see Buck becoming a IV. This is why SPARTAN-III's and IV's would get their asses kicked by a II. They haven't gone through the full augmentation process. ONI wanted quantity over quality with the newer iterations of the SPARTAN Program. And yes, they aren't pale in the series because the showrunners and actors didn't play the games, read the books, or consume literally anything Halo related.

During chiefs upcoming into becoming a spartan, the experiments were a lot more intrusive and dangerous. As time went on, those type of experiments started to fade because not a lot of kids were making it. So you’re right in a sense

The whole detective story mixed with the vulnerability and fear you felt as a player when playing as the Rookie made it such a fun and memorable experience because you weren't playing as some gigachad super-soldier that carries humanity in almost every battle you're part of. Plus the OST was epic, likewise with the ambience of New Mombasa.

A lot of effort was put into making the marines feel alive in the games. They joke in noncombat scenes, banter among each other in the firefights, call for aid, apologize for friendly fire, express relief when the chief shows up, express awe at seeing a real spartan and have lines that relate to the current situation. The developers went out of their way to make them feel like real people, looking at combat footage and discovering what real people (Marines?) say in combat. Throughout the games, Chief is very reserved when around the marines. He doesn't show a lot of emotion. But he does act heroically. He pulls that one marine into the dropship on the first mission, spends the 2nd mission rescuing stranded marines and navy personnel and then spends the rest of the 3 games risking his ass for humanity. In the game you can sort of feel his loneliness just by his reserved dialogie when surrounded by the marines. He doesn't say a lot but he is definitely characterized as someone who puts duty first, and his reserved manner hints that it takes a toll on him. A lot of those marines he saves dies, and the helmet hides nost signs of grief. But there is personality there. There are subtle hints that he cares, a few jaded or sassy/cynical lines of dialogue... the way he risks himself for others... the tendency towards high adrenaline risky manievers that could get him killed... these all say something about him. But for most of the game, Cortana is the one showing emotion. She speaks for Chief, both figuratively and literally, by answering questions addreased to him, and showing emotions he is not allowed to. She sasses Chief, shows affection towards Keyes that Chief is implied to feel, and wears her emotions a bit more openly. So throughout the course of the 3 games we see Chief characterized by his interactions with Cortana. At first she says things like "hey, there are 2 of us in here now" implying he is risks himself more than he should. Then you begin to see him sass her back a little. Then he starts to show concern and respect for her as a person instead of a tool... Then, in the game I haven't played, he makes personal sacrifices because he believes in her. He trusts her and takes her side or something. I don't know how that game worked, but there are definitely songs about that relationship. Look up Frozen Sleep. So, long story short, there is character there, its just subtle. And trying to make it not subtle is a terrible tv idea. If they wanted to go that route, they should have done a Reach type plot where he saves the day a few times but slowly loses the members of his team. Introduce the other apartans in season2, after he's been all stoic, and then show him caring for them in subtle ways. Maybe he remembers another spartans birthday and gets her a little something. Maybe he asks about the pilots cat... subtle things that shows he cares abiit those around him, even as he is forced to spend their lives to win a war. Also, take out the mcguffins. Have the objectoves be military objectives instead of scifi bullshit. Thats how you write a good story. And of you need chief to have a character arc, you can have him risk the mission for a teammate like he did in the books. (Yeah, they managed to nake him a character in a book series, its not like there is no precedent to John having a character.)

From the perspective of a standalone thing (which I guess it's supposed to be), sure, he's "just John". But compared to canon Halo material, he doesn't act like John or Chief. The joke name Jimmy Rings somehow feels more accurate

The main problem with the show is that the spartans who were previously controlled by the lack of knowing what it is like to not be a soldier which created interesring character moments (like how chief found his first conpanions in blue team and cortana and the bond between them) however the show dumbs it down so it is just a chip in their butt. It removes so much of what made spartans good protagonists.

His helmet never should of came off. Bungie played with the idea that his helmet was his face. Narratively, his suit and his visor was his physical self. It feels like a cheap writers shortcut to ignore those possibilities and go for a run of the mill heroes journey. His mechanic helmet represented a zeitgeist of doing what’s best for the most amount of people. Like wall-e, a movie for kids, the motives were still familiar to anyone who watched it. Nuanced dialogue should of been the focus.

I hate any show that uses modern guns with a bunch of sci-fi bs on it to represent future weapons. Especially when the source material has plenty of original props that aren’t hard to replicate.

I despised everything about this series and can't quantify everything I dislike about it without coming off ranty forever because I do deeply loved the story and lore told in the games and books. This TV series fundamentally disregarding everything that made Halo well...Halo just for the sake of "it being a different timeline". This desire from the show runners, directors, or investors who whoever ran this shit show doesn't make up for the basic problems of bad pacing, bad directing and bad writing and many mand more issues.

A few inaccuracies aside, I thought this was a much better (and fairer) critique of the series' strengths and weaknesses than most I've seen. I do wish folks would stop comparing it to Mando regarding the helmet issue, though. The two have very different reasons for wearing their helmets, and the only reason Chief never shows his face in-game (he does remove the helmet) is so we can better see ourselves as him. That said, I fucking screamed at him when he took it off in an active combat zone in ep five. 🤣

TBF with the helmet thing from what I’ve heard Spartans feel most comfortable well in their armor so removing their helmet isn’t something they really wanted to do at least the spartan II’s from what I’ve heard

@@insertusernamehere163 I think I remember some Spartans feeling that way, especially after prolonged deployments, but I don't recall it being a prevailing attitude. I'm willing to acknowledge I may be forgetting some details of the lore from the books, though. I've got to do a reread.

its clear that studios are basically greenlighting original ideas under the guise of established ips. this and resident evil have nothing to do with the ip’s and could be better enjoyed(maybe) if not associated but then who would watch it? this isnt halo..its jupiter descending of the galaxy vol 1 or sumn

This show suffers from a fundamental misunderstanding of how the tech works, the relationship between John and Cortana, who the Covenant are and their dogma, and the the bizarre choice of making the UNC extremely antagonistic. As well as a completely unlikable secondary character of Kwan.

My issue with halo, it was so bad it hurt, reach was glassed before master chief was let loose, they are artificially changed to have no emotion, not by chipping, if you’re going to make a show based off an IP, learn the IP…. This would’ve been good without the halo attachment but with just made no sense and made it way worse

I slowly watched Halo and never finished it. Honestly, I LOVED Star Trek Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ and it made me not care about Halo...

Not saying it would have saved the show, it's still not amazing, but it would have been better if the main character wasn't Master Chief. A new completely different spartan with little to no expectations on them and known history. You could still have Master Chief pop up in the show and be the actual Master Chief.
