The Halo TV series has been universally hated by Halo fans. It's like the showrunners specifically wanted to avoid staying true to the source material. Like they didn't want to make the show for Halo fans. But what if the show was made for Halo fans? What if we re-wrote the Halo TV series to be actually good? Well, only one way to find out...

I genuinely don't know how Msoft fumbled their flagship series being turned into a TV Show. It feels like Msoft doesn't care about the series AT ALL and only sees it as an income source. All Halo is to them is a hollow product that produces money. Such a shame that corporate structures are ruled by people in suits that only see dollar signs.

@@csnorth7that's exactly how they see it unfortunately halo isn't the same copy and paste trash that can be made into 50 different games and resold with different names and skins. Halo always has been and always will be unique. It's a product made by true effort and restrictions that kept it from becoming a hollow piece of trash for a "wider audience". They don't treat a single peice of this game like trash. Not the story, not the characters and above all not the audience. They share something they love. They don't force something they demand you to accept. It's like a healthy relationship. You don't keep coming back because you have to. You do it because no matter the difficulties it will always give you back everything you put into it and sometimes so much more. It gives you a reason to come back. It doesn't try to force you to accept it. It lets you love and hate everything about it.

"took pride in abandoning the source material" That's intentional. When Hollywood uses the source material they have to give the video game writers writing credits and royalties. That’s where all the money is for corporate employees. Hollywood writers want to keep that royalty money for themselves, so they either make up their own new characters or drastically change the original ones. Hollywood turned into a big nepotism and royalty scam.

I've always wanted a "band of brothers" style of series. Starting with interviews from the "veterans" of the Human-Covenant War. Giving context to those who don't know halo and hinting to future events for those that do. Following a platoon or company sized element that moved from battle to battle, especially on reach or the lead up to the battle of the arc.
@sorrenblitz805
@sorrenblitz805 10 ай бұрын
They kind of did that with covenant aliens for the ad material for Master Chief Collection they had an interview with a grunt that apparently "Survived every battle the Master Chief fought in"
@Duskraven67
@Duskraven67 10 ай бұрын
@sorrenblitz805 Well, the "believe" ad campaign was essentially that, too. They made a mock museum and had older actors play veterans retelling the story of the war and the master chief. But I'm not looking for a 1 - 3 episode ad campaign. I specifically wanted a full series 1 - 3 seasons (10 - 24 episodes per season) long following a unit of UNSC marines/army troopers. Having very little direct involvement with the Spartans and just focusing on the war itself.
@DugasPharmacy
@DugasPharmacy 3 ай бұрын
That would have been awesome! The hard part would be trying to write how one platoon survived all the major battles like Reach and New Mombasa. Maybe writing them as ODST so one could say they were highly trained and not just cannon fodder marines. And ODST would pay homage to 101st airborne from Band of Brothers. Very cool idea, if only they cared enough to service the fans.
@Duskraven67
@Duskraven67 3 ай бұрын
@DugasPharmacy you could have it start on reach. The lead up and training of the marines, tip of the spear, and then have them get pulled out sometime around new Alexandria in the mid-season. Then we switch to earth and the defense of new Mombasa. We know that Buck had a similar trajectory, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to say that other units did as well. And just like band of brothers, we would start with a whole company of guys, but it would be quickly whittled down to a handful of familiar faces by the end. The rest being replacements that we acknowledge but don't give a significant amount of time to.

14:30, you say follow almost exactly the events of the Silent Cartographer level, does that include getting the warthog stuck in the doors that lock on you forcing a detour to open them? Or perhaps this is a moment to incorporate that fan strategy by having Cortana say something like "Wait Chief! The Covenant have rigged the doors to lock if we approach, I can undo it but we'll need to bypass at a nearby- What are you doing" "Improvising." And Chief guns the warthog in barely getting the front end through the doors as the back half is caught and wedged in, climbing out he proceeds with the mission, maybe even tearing the turret off the Warthog and bringing it along. Just a thought.

Idea for pilot episode opening: Panoramic shot of Halsey explaining to 6 year old John what a quarter is; coin toss scene happens with young LT Keyes in the background. Cut to John waking up from the cryo dream to witness the high octane slaughter as he makes his way to the bridge to the current CPT Keyes. (Quick jump cuts to increase stress/tension) Title screen. Then flash to the hours previous to give context for the random slipspace jump. This would set up depth of Keyes in the story, and allude to flashbacks at key times throughout series.

Watching this shortly after watching your review of the Halo Infinite campaign just emphasizes how the recent productions don't really fully understand what makes the IP interesting. It's not just a story about the Chief. It's about how the Chief fits into the larger narrative of the military conflict, the rings, and all of the other characters we have become attached to. It's not about one special person beast-moding his way through hordes of villains like doomguy. While the chief is special, he's just the player's vehicle for experiencing the world.

Because the dramatic demands and production logistics of a television series are extremely different from a video game. One of the absolute biggest problem is the sheer amount of action sequences that would be necessary. Action sequences are extremely difficult and expensive to film. For example, the longest battle in any motion picture ever made is 40 minutes long, the battleof Helms Deep, that’s 40 minutes of action over the course of a 3 1/2 hour movie. And all that put together would not be enough to fill up one episode of the Halo show if it just remade CE. Further complicating things is the fact Halo is science fiction. There are some movies that are basically nonstop action such as “The Best in Hell”, but that movie was made by a private military company with a lot of current stocks of equipment on hand, so it was quite cheap; it’s not like having to craft costumes and armors for all your characters and having to create visual effects for plasma, weapons, having to create convincing, alien environments, and all kinds of prop guns, and so on. AM and co are just being stupid.

It should’ve started in three time periods that you switch between constantly. 1. The initial waking up of the children that become Spartans. 2. Avery Johnson arriving at Harvest. 3. A Spartan Team fighting against the Covenant until finally suiciding themselves. Second Episode 1. John navigating his childhood of training - some of the Spartans that died last episode being encountered as children. 2. Avery Johnson and others realise there’s alien contact. 3. Another piece of Spartans - maybe Grey Team doing something and surviving. 3rd 1. John and Co. embark for their armor and start fitting out into them. 2. First Contact goes hostile. 3. The Spartans assemble for the first time in their armor as alarms blare as the Covenant arrive. This makes things more open ended and valuable commercially with multiple Spartan teams to sell as toys and so on

There's so much expanded universe provided by the books that could have been used to enrich the story developed by the games. Personally, if I was writing a Halo tv show, I’d change it up a bit. Instead of doing the original game for the entire season, I’d do Halo Reach for the first season, even throwing in some stuff from the Fall of Reach book. Doing a season where you follow Noble Team, watching the members die throughout the season until you get to the finale with Noble Six’s last stand, you watch as the team you grew attached to throughout the season get killed one by one until they’re all gone. Then, the final scene shifts to the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn as we see Captain Keyes ordering the random jump as per the Cole Protocol, and the final shot is Master Chief in his stasis pod. *Then* I would start the story of the original game in season 2, changing the entire cast(except Cortana, since part of the story or Reach is getting Cortana off the planet, so she can be the thread that connects the season 1 cast to the rest of the show) as if it’s a different show. I think incorporating Reach as the first season, then changing the cast for the remainder of the series, would be an interesting way to surprise viewers(at least, the ones who never played the games). But, that’s just me. I would market the first season as “Halo: Reach”, then season 2 would change the title to “Halo: Combat Evolved”. For season 3 onward, I’d either have to think of new names for each season(because Halo 2 wouldn’t make much sense for a season 3, and same goes for Halo 3 for a season 4) or it would remain “Halo: Combat Evolved” for the rest of the show. I would do it that way so everyone thinks it’s supposed to be a single season miniseries, until the final scene where it teases the story of the original game, leading to fans speculating on whether that means there would be a season 2 and if it would be the first game(there would, and it would) or if it was just a tease and nothing more.
@themasterseye
@themasterseye 2 ай бұрын
I want to agree with you but I just cant. Part of the power behind Master chief is he embodies the myth that spartans never die. If you start a show with a team of spartans dieing over the season you lose that myth. You almost have to either start with chief and the spartans before the human covenant war, or bounce around through various human victories with the spartans leading the way to forge that myth up. Once you have built them up you can then show that the covenant is a threat even to spartans and you can then build chief up to be a standout even among spartans as his own myth.
@Hawkcam1996
@Hawkcam1996 2 ай бұрын
@@themasterseye I disagree with you on the myth. We all know that a whole bunch of Spartans died on Reach. But most of those Spartans were a different generation than Chief. Remember, he’s a Spartan II, while Noble Team were Spartan III’s. Showing Spartan III’s die, while Chief, a Spartan II, never dies, *enhances* Chief’s own legend, if you ask me.

Here's an idea to juuust to add to the drama, confusion and horror of that first fight with the Flood combat forms. Have the viewers occassionally see the radar in Chief's helmet and have the marine based enemies show up as friendlies.
@michaelramon2411
@michaelramon2411 11 ай бұрын
It might also be good if Chief loses his guns (or runs out of ammo) while trapped with the Flood and has to rely on weapons he picks up from the dead Covenant for the first time in the series. Demonstrates his desperation.

That would be fucking cool. Also to add to the whole Aliens inspiration, have his radar make sound like the ones do in Aliens. Give the viewer some indication of his awareness without directly seeing the screen, which of course, is neatly tucked away inside of his helmet.

My changes: master chief should be bald, or largely scarred in some way. the series should also have a split pov between the covenant soldiers, showing an in-depth dive into their ranks and their beliefs in order to explore a better understanding of why they fight And why their so loyal (also they should actually me threats in fights because they are not represented that way in the show)

Hey Actman, Screenwriter, and Actor here. I think you made some really great points in this video. I think creating a dynamic Master Chief that works within this story would be very challenging. I Think one of the biggest characters that we could look to is the Mandalorian. Chiefs body language would be 80% of his dialogue. Cortana would carry most conversations, and planning, because she is literally an AI created to help aid in battle. When Chief get's left alone on guilty spark it would make it all the more terrifying to not cortana chatting it up. I'm curious to hear others thoughts on this?
@sgtcoffman
@sgtcoffman 11 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I was thinking. Not having Cortana anymore chatting to Master Chief would be so eerie in a show format. I know it was when I was playing the game. You were truly alone for the first time in the game and it was brutal. I'm sure Chief would talk a little more in the actual show, but still, his body language would be really important.

This is my point too. I think we all have the combat nostalgia. That can't be more than 1/5 1/4 of each episode. It is a tough project. They failed but they did try to address the character issues. Just poorly.

@@greaterfool1176No. Your giving them too much credit. They decided that their audience couldn't be trusted with a laconic protagonist, despite dozens of serious proving it works. I don't know if it's because they didn't understand the concept, or some executive just wanted to check boxes for prestige TV. Regardless, they didn't want to make a Halo TV show. They wanted to make shitty Expanse. Guess what The Expanse was a mess but without competing scifi it was able to get away with it. Halo is competing with itself. It didn't have that luxury.

@@userJohnSmith No I don't think I am. I didn't even watch more than highlights because I could tell it was non-cannon trash. That being said. Peter Jackson. @userJohnSmith
@userJohnSmith 11 ай бұрын
@@greaterfool1176 Again not really. It's probably been a bigger issue wrangling studios. Chief's a compelling character, simple but full of depth. Look at 4 and 6. Even 343 was able to translate him to the screen well. This constant obsession with trying to expand Halo beyond what it is tempts people who don't understand the vote story to try and deviate too much. It's a lot like Star Wars legends stuff. Some of it was good, but a lot of it was trash. It would have been a huge mistake to just adapt it.

It's almost like all they had to do was adapt the game's story, integrate some of the stuff the supplemental material added (I still think an episode of downtime that introduces Alpha Base would've been nice, probably right before TSC) and figure out how to add some chemistry for some emotional investment.

@@iancrowley420 Ah that's just it though, there have been good shows out lately. I should've said that it makes it hard to side with the writer when series that many love and enjoy get stuff like this shoe horned writing. The shows that I've seen that are good recently have built up their own existence and worlds to hit a targeted audience to earn that audiences respect and attention. Paramount's defense for this crappy writing is broader market appeal, which is like flipping the bird at the large dedicated audience you already have and combined with under whelming writing experience is a show that people only watch specifically for the dedicated action scenes now. I do give you a like for showing the error in my first response thanks.

Honestly I think what would work better and what was already shown to work well in the game trailer would have been a show following the UNSC set during the invasion of Earth in Halo 2/3/ODST. Seriously go watch the ODST trailer "ODST The Life" where they go through boot camp so damn good. Have chief be what he should: a one man army that shows up, wrecks shop, takes a marine's weapons, says nothing and dashes off, repeat as needed for story/McGuffin moments. The story still revolves around him, but he's more of a force than a character. That was the entire point of when Bungie made chief, he's supposed to be the faceless super hero we self-insert into. A marine or ODST soldier though? Now that makes for an intriguing story character and lets us see the grittier side of Halo's universe while not dropping the Halo elements (like the stupid show we got did). This was probably the direction Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson were going with the purported film years back... man what could have been... Still the Halo 3 and ODST ad campaigns were god-tier.

I took a screenwriting course recently and filmmaking is going to be what I use my university degree for. This…this is how you do a great screenplay. Showing Chief’s emotions in creative ways without showing his face, using the concept of Chekhov’s Gun with Melissa, the camerawork and effort put into hiding Chief’s face, adding scenes for more context such as Keyes being captured and the workings of the Covenant, and so much more. All of it is amazing. If I were to give any critiques, I would say that the language of the Covenant needs to be mostly consistent. Use the games as an example for this. I would say it could be confusing to have them speak their native language and also English at times and and also their native language with subtitles at times. I’d say keep English and native language and swap between them only as necessary. But again, this was amazing to see.

I thought the show Vikings did a pretty good job at this, to be honest. I mean, the first lines spoken are in Old Norse, and then finally, it's English with a Norse/Swedish accent and when the Saxons were introduced, they used Old English

I think the pacing is a little too fast in this version, there are no breaks in the action or personal investments that have time to develop in a lot of the characters. Combined with the cost of doing full action cgi for 10 hours, this script wouldn't work.

@Duck-DuckGo Even then it flows too much like an action video game. The closest thing I can relate this to is the movie Crank, and as much as I love that movie, watching it for ten hours every other year would kill my interest in the franchise on around the third episode. If the tv series in its current state hadn't had the name Halo on it, it would have been mostly successful, and mostly was among people who knew nothing about Halo.
