Ham Digital Modes Redux: HT's and Fusion, DMR and Dstar!

A short redux on the digital modes I enjoy with ham radio and how the HT's stack up. DMR, Dstar and Fusion!

Nice video. A couple of notes on things you've mentioned: The Kenwood 74 is now being replaced by the 75 so hopefully prices will come way down Dstar is actually an open standard developed by the JARL. The reason why only icom has used it thus far is because yaseu insists on making their own little walled garden. Hopefully kenwood will continue to include dstar in future radios Regarding the 74's receive range... It is truly unmatched currently but another great radio to have is the Kenwood tm-d710 because it's b band can receive VHF/UHF/800/900/1.2ghz! So, if you have a 74 and a 710 in your car then you can listen to 100khz to 1.2ghz! Kenwood is expensive and slow to develop products but they pack the features in. 73

Seumas; the thing about the TH-D74 being so expensive, even more so since they discontinued it is it's the best out there as far as I'm concerned, you don't just have the APRS to computer but you also have the KISS TNC built in. It's an overlooked feature by some but I make use of it at least a few times a week for winlink. No packet around here yet. Unfortunately I won't bring it anywhere and when I do it's for a specific reason because you can't get your hands on them much. That being said, mine sat in a mud puddle over night and was fine. I do love my FT3D and my 878 also.

Every single time I have used DMR there has been some strange problem with either someone taking over the talk group, drop outs, repeats or some reason where I cannot maintain a QSO more than a minute. Not my radio it just a mess. I am looking for a new handheld, maybe DStar but from what I hear there is nobody there either. What's the deal with Digital these days?

I’ve got the 3D and the 878. Love them both. I live near Wilmington, NC and we’re lacking in D-Star also. Guess that’s what the OpenSpot 4 pro is for.
