I bought 37 of these. I put them on all my bices and duct taped them to my car. I went for a drive of 100 miles with 1/4 tank of gas. It makes sense that the biggest aero gains will be in the cleaner air at the front of a bike, so things like an aero helmet, front wheel and forks. The potential gains from secondary elements in dirty air, like the rear cage, are miniscule, yet that won't prevent some fools from (literally) buying in to the marketing hype of crappy pseudo-scientific products like this.

Think of a sine wave in electrical current flow and then observe the unbalanced wave form after it passed through a circuit. A similar thing happens to an air stream on it meets that spinning chopper of a crank arm, leg, & foot. The air would have to ' Smooth out by the time it meets the 'hangar fairing'. @hambini the 'dirty air' scenario is actually more ineffective than you explain with Shimano. DA and Ultegra (maybe 105?) are all Shadow-style. The mech sits directly under then cassette, not outboard as older road rear mechs did. So it's not only the shoes, but the entire bb and crankset that the rear mech "drafts". So it's constantly in dirty air.

I don’t think ‘shadow’ derailleurs make a difference here. Shadow design or not, the cage is in the same place, under the cassette. It has to be. It was the parallelogram that was moved inboard.

Hambin, at 9:29, that position would seem to be for high speed, not low speed? When the derailleur is in that position you’re likely to be in the 11 or 12 unless you’re running a really big chainring to offset the cross-chaining losses.

One thing you forgot to mention: yes, the ceramic speed pulley spins so nicely in comparison to Shimano or Sram, but the simple reason behind is the lack of sealing of the bearing. So if you really buy this thing for the (marginal) gainz you need to take it apart and clean it on a regular basis... :D

Someone should just put a bike (with rider pedaling) in a wind tunnel and wave a smoke wand around in front of it. That would (IMO) quickly illustrate what is important in aero, and what isn't. I'm guessing: the rider's position and helmet/clothing (including shoes/socks), the front wheel/tire combination, possibly a portion of the bars and hoods. I'd be willing to bet that the potential gains behind/below those items decreases to near zero in short order for 99.9% of the riders on the road. I say: spend the $800 on a bike fit, a tight-fitting jersey, keeping the drivetrain clean, and absolutely some flowers for the hair dresser -- the gains will be far more significant (and fun).

A smoke wand doesn't give you quantitative data, that's why we use load cells to actually measure drag. Drag2zero will happily rent out their tunnel to anyone - a lot of serious amateur riders are using the tunnel to tune their setup, which at £1200 a time goes some way to explaining their bank balance. Everything counts, it just counts in proportion to CdA. There's not much point in faffing about with go-faster bits if your numbers aren't pinned on properly. With that said, very small drag savings can be highly relevant in time trials or sprints. Much as I respect Hambini's credentials, I'd personally be a bit reluctant to dismiss this as useless. The rear mech is in an incredibly complex area of flow and properly weird things can happen there, especially with a disc wheel. We know that oversized pulleys provide a small but measurable drag reduction, so it's totally plausible to me that this setup could deliver a useful drag saving in some circumstances. Obviously it's totally pointless if you're a lardy MAMIL, but it might buy you a few tenths if you're a properly fast tester with a properly fast setup.

low friction requires a small bearing, that in turn requires as little axial load as possible. To achieve that, you need a small jockey wheel. Absolute Black (they are actually LUCID IP SLU, registered in Andorra) have not given any data to show their bearings have any lower drag and when they said they would, they then sent a load of threatening letters

Road bike drop outs are 130mm. Minus a bit for nut etc. Q-width on road bike usually 150mm. Haven’t measured it but looked on 2 of my bikes with shoes attached. Looks to me a pro with a big front chain ring wouldn’t have feet in front of the derailleur but rather the crank, which could be aero, because they can use the 3rd or 4th cassette cog. Mere mortals with only a 53 up front & normal cranks though… suspect what minor benefit there is would disappear when used by people who don’t get stuff for free. Think I saw them in the Giro D’Italia on Israel Premier-tech TT bikes last Saturday BTW, at least Alex Dowsett’s. Nasty bump at the end though, so I don’t know how big a chainring he dared use.

But..., since we are talking low airspeeds when we are talking bikes, I tend to believe that pressure differences are less important than the "smoothing" of the airflow and that the spinning pullywheels are removed from the direct airflow. Well I do not think it matters much anyhow, except lining the pckets of the shareholders. I would mount a static surface on the lower arm, ahead of the shifter... (I do not care about those old men in UCI).

It doesn't take any analysis to realize that the OSPW cover will do nothing. Just compare the area of the cover to the frontal area of bike and rider. The cover is probably 0.3% of the total area, so if it reduced drag on the OSPW by 50% that would be about 0.28 watts at 32kph

As a bike shop owner my best advice for getting to the finish line first: Use good tires which do not go flat Buy a bike which goes in a straight line so you do not crash Get fitted so your ear(balance point) is over the axis of steering (head tube). Learn to ride rollers so you learn to steer with your butt not your hands.

I think you've suggested before, feel like there's a good aero 101 video for everyone - going as basic as what percentages of W x H are made up of rider, wheels, handlebar -- so people can put figures to the maximum potential gains. Eg handlebar makes up (plucking number here) 5% of total area, so your maximum gain, if achievable is capped at 5%, Vs wheels, Vs rider. Basically a basic video showing for each part that makes up the frontal area, what that maximal gain could be (in that forward plane only).

Some malfunctioning part of my smooth brain thought, for a second, "oh, but this could be nice for reducing the amount of grit that gets gummed up in the pulley wheels", but then I remembered that the chain has to exit the fairing somewhere, and naturally that leaves the bottom and back of the pulley wheel exposed for all manner of shite to fly up into. So it seems that even with the most gracious application of possible benefits afforded to this wad of plastic, in the end it remains (as with all Ceramicspeed products), a tiny little flag scotch-taped to a cocktail straw emblazoned in oil-slick lettering with their company motto: "I AM A TWAT".

You know the fairings/covers that go over chains and chainrings on kids bikes? Would that not be a better idea for smoothing out air flow in that area of the bike? Air is already really turbulent but it would cover a much larger part of that dirty air going from front edge of big chainring all the way back the the cassette. Would look shit but if you wanna go fast and you're not governed by UCI limitations like in Ironman racing that looking shit takes a back seat

I think the problem there would be kids bikes tend to be single speed so you don't have the problem of the chain slack. I think the future is likely to be epicyclic gearboxes inside the hubs.
