I love everything about this watch. Initially I didn't want to spend so much as I was just getting into watches. I decided to buy a Seiko SNK809 instead. The SNK was definitely a "gateway drug" and I soon after purchased this Hamilton and a few other automatics. Great video - thanks!

Minitwatch has a 3/2/2016 review of this watch where toward the end of the review he puts on a black leather alligator band with white stitching. I was loving the watch as a casual field/sports watch on the stainless bracelet but with that leather alligator ... it becomes an astonishing dress watch that really melts my butter. Keep the wonderful reviews coming ... my new Steinhart Ocean 39 arrives in a few days.

Excellent video on an excellent watch, that I have been looking a couple of times, and also the one thing I always advise people is to get watches on bracelets if possible, as straps are easy to come by and have a lifetime, while bracelets are very hard to get and cost A LOT when trying to get them later on

I have this watch with both the black and the silver dial. I really like the black and brown Hamilton leather straps these watches come with but I came across a Rolex style stainless steel Jubilee bracelet with polished center links on Strapcode and the bracelet just looks killer on the silver dial. Fits perfectly and is very comfortable. I like the black leather on the black dial...for now. A couple of people have asked me if it was a Rolex LOL.

Love this watch. Owned it years ago. Sold it because it was running a little slow and couldn't regulate the movement. Also didn't like the reflections due to the crystal. Such a charming piece though. And the 38mm size is just right. Also, the bracelet is excellent with a milled clasp (not that cheap stamped junk). I just put in an order for the silver dial version on leather. Planning to potentially due a crystal swap. Great video. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

So if you've taken the smarter route and purchased the bracelet version, but you would like to also have the leather strap - well I think I have found the best aftermarket replacement! The aviator line from Timefactors are seemingly identical to the oem Hamilton, aside from the buckle and stampings of course. I am holding both brown straps in my hand and the quality, colour and leather finishing are the same. They also have variations of the same. If anyone knows they come from the same factory please let me know as I am curious. Anyways, this is just a plug for the range of straps at Timefactors - the quality and pricing is stellar, but the range is limited.

That's a fair price. Do you still like the watch? For a 6.5" wrist would you recommend this one or the khaki king 40mm?
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I've reviewed the Khaki King in the past as well, and I didn't find it felt a whole lot bigger than the 38mm Khaki Field. If you want to err on the side of caution you can't go wrong with the 38mm Khaki Field Auto but I would bet that you could also pull off the Khaki King. My wrist is 6.75" and I felt comfortable with either one.

Just bought this watch and waiting for it to be delivered. Some of my thoughts on a few points that seem to keep coming up; 1) I agree, it is weird that the bezel is polished rather than brushed, being a field/military watch you don't want any reflections. It is however a modern watch which is military inspired. I'm in the military and no one would wear a watch like this, it's all digital (G shock is stock standard for soldiers these days). If you were using it out in the field eg camping/hiking there's no reason you need to be stealthy so I think having a polished bezel could be an advantage, maybe catching light to reflect to signal a plane or person in case of emergency... 2) Lume- let's say the bezel was brushed and you were to use it in a military environment, the fact that is doesn't last long or is a little weak is also probably an advantage, you don't want the enemy to see the lume and give away your position. Also, unless you have a brain of a goldfish, you wouldnt be constantly checking the time. If you really needed to see the time you would find a way. Most likely place your torch over the watch with it off and under a raincoat and then turn it on to recharge the lume. 3) No AR coating.... Yea that's a downer.... I dont know, maybe some people like that.... Not me though😂 oh well can't win them all. Great review though, Im looking forward to receiving mine and wearing it on my next camping trip.

Yes there is a sweat spot in there for sure. There is a pretty big jump for these really fine watches with great finishes and good movements to JLC, and Rolexs. Omega has that speedmaster moon phase in blue that is awsome but now you are up in the above $6,000.00 again and then some for these watches new/used in good shape. I don't see where the value is between these upper tier watches and the really nice $500.00 watches. $3000.00 does not get you much new in the watch world.

Nice video. I wish the bracelet had more micro adjustments as well. I have a SARB033 and 35, both with the same issue and could not get a great fit. Fitted both with Strapcode oysters that have 6 micros and problem solved. Another reviewer posted about the Strapcode SARB017 oyster being a good match for this watch, and it is pretty good (not perfect, but more than acceptable for me). My dilemma now is do I risk the roughly $15 extra for the bracelet version on the gray market, or just get it with a leather strap and spend roughly $100.00 for the strapcode. I think it's worth the chance I might get a good fit with the standard bracelet and if it doesn't work out, get the Strapcode. Incidentally, enjoy you "rocking" the Brewer's cap; I'm in the Milwaukee area and, of course, a huge Brewer fan!

@JSarmat866 жыл бұрын
Hi Guy! Thank You for Your in-depth review of this wonderful watch. I like it very much, but there are some minor things that keep me from buying it, in particular - the poor lume and the lack of AR coating that You mentioned, but there are couple aesthetic things that i can't understand: 1. I just LOVE the font of the numerals, but i can't understand why they get rid of "1"-s and put those sticks instead. I suppose, that point was specified in the military standard whereby this watch originaly was made, because every modern "field" watch has those sticks instead of "1"-s. I just don't like them. 2. I'm not the biggest fan of the syringe hands. 3. That seconds hand looks awkward and stubby to me. They could do it's tip a little bit more syringe-like - may be 1 mm of "syringe" tip, so the red tip wouldn't cover partially the white markings on the dial. Also, the red on black doesn't read extremely well, so they could put some white accent (may be some lume) in the middle of the red part. If that would be fixed, this Hamilton would probably be my favorite watch. I'm curious what do YOU think about my remarks? Thank You!
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching JSarmat86, and for the comments. I appreciate it. Regarding the AR and Lume. I honestly don't care about Lume very much. If it had no lume I'd still love the watch. The lack of AR can be annoying depending on your surroundings and lighting, but I never find the watch rendered completely unreadable. About the font of the numerals, I honestly never thought about the typography of the 1's on the dial. I can't say I know why they choose that but you're probably right it's more historical perhaps? I really like the syringe style hands. It makes setting the time preciscely very easy because the minute hand reaches all the way out to the seconds track at the edge of the dial, allowing you to perfectly line them up for the correct time. It's a little obsessive but I get annoyed when my minute hand doesn't touch the minute marker when the seconds hand passes the 12 o'clock position on the dial. I like the hint of red on the seconds hand, it just breaks up the monochromatic design - albeit slightly. That said perhaps consider the Khaki King, it has a white tip on the seconds hand. I've previously reviewed it. Thanks again.

Hello there, great review. I've got a question regarding the the watch, I can't seem to find a new Khaki Field Auto 38 that says Swiss Made in the uk? Can you give some advice. Thanks
@JustBlueFish7 жыл бұрын
Hamilton changes little things on their watches pretty often, without notification. They have changed the decoration on the movements rotor several times in the past few years, raising a lot of confusion amongst collectors in regards to authenticity. The Swiss Made designation on the bottom of the dial has added and removed at different times as well. I don't know what the current production pieces have specifically, as mine is a bit older, but as long as you're buying from a trusted seller I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I was interested in the Hamilton Khaki Field watch... however, I was watching another channel's reviews on this watch and the reviewer mentioned that Hamilton had deleted the watch's regulation control... yes, apparently there is no way for a technician to regulate one of these short of returning it to Hamilton. Hey Blue Fish, great review though i swapped my 38mm Khaki Field Auto for a SARB033 of a friend of mine, not that sorry about that just because H10 movement is quite costly to service here(140 USD here which is quite unjust for its price imho, 1/3 of Hammy's price). It's not standart or elaborate grade 2824-2 which can be serviced for 50-60 USD at its best, my watchmaker servicing 6r15 cal. for 40 USD. Pros for Hammy: it was definitely a tough piece, loved the case finishing, material quality, it was quite accurate than my Hamilton Khaki Mechanical which loses 7 secs in a day. Cons: Costly maintanence, Swatch Group here mostly does not give a shit about customer satisfaction, they don't care about technical details. I'm very glad 6r15 saved my day.

@porschephile2k35 жыл бұрын
I read the H-10 is not that serviceable by just any watchmaker. The $140 you're paying is for the laser precision regulation of your watch. $140 might be expensive but think of it this way: when you buy a $5k car and have to spend $1k on maintenance, you don't really think about spending 20% of what you bought the car for, it's part of the ownership. Mobility has a cost, and so does owning a watch like this.

Interesting that we all have different ideas of good/bad. For me, the proper size crown is one of the Khaki auto's best defining features. Too many otherwise good watches have small and fiddly crowns. If anything, I'd get rid of the (useless) 24 hr markings.

Interesting indeed. I love the 24 hour scale on the dial. It's quintessential for a military style field watch. That's part of the fun of this hobby, figuring out what you like and finding the watches that most closely align with your preferences.

Quintessential if you're on the other side of the Atlantic, perhaps, and perfectly understandable on a watch with American heritage. 'Field watch' is also an American term. British MOD spec watches have never been called such or ever had 24 hr markings since we can all count past 12 (no offence, meant to be a joke!). But all this is really unimportant, since it's now achieved classic status. A great watch - IMO the best all rounder for under £500. You're definitely wrong about the crown, but keep up the great work! Best regards from the UK.

I could go without it, but I don’t mind it. For a field watch, it makes sense

why only two micro adjustment holes and a clasp this large, there is plenty of space for more holes. it does not make sense

It's a head scratcher. It's still a great watch but lack of AR coating under the sapphire, a screwdown crown to prevent accidental pulling out of the crown... The whole package is saved by such a nice and classic dial design / movement.

Does this watch not having a screw-down crown bother you?
@JustBlueFish2 жыл бұрын
Not really. I have been in a situation where any of my watches would get more than splashed with water exactly zero times since I've been collecting and wearing them. Otherwise, they get wet when I clean them and screw down crowns aren't necessary for that.

Why didn't you go for the khaki king? It has day and date complication. Does it wear larger than 38mm khaki field?
@JustBlueFish7 жыл бұрын
The Khaki King is 40mm so a bit bigger. I think it’s more money too, slightly. At The time I thought I’d like this better. I had a King loaned to me and I reviewed it, it’s a really nice watch too. I like them both.

Hi great review, I bought this watch today on black leather. Love the look and feel and yes I agree with the comments about the reflection from the crystal. I am considering getting the murph a bit overpriced but my dealer will give me a discount, unfortunately it’s a 42mm though I can live with it. Any comments about the murph will be appreciated.

If you can find one, the Borealis Adraga is a much better value.

Why Hamilton don’t throw some AR coating on the underside of the crystal is beyond me. It would elevate a great watch to an almost perfect watch. As it stands, the dial is almost impossible to read unless you turn your wrist to a particular angle. On a supposed ‘field watch’, that is just plain unacceptable, especially at this price.

Probably the Watch Group wants you to pay extra for that (i.e. go up the SG ladder and buy a Longines or something like that).

I see a lot of people complaining about the lack of AR but I have never had any issue whatsoever when looking at the time. Am I missing something?

Lack of lume stinks of market segment management by Swatch...
@darkestfugue2 жыл бұрын
i like this watch a lot, however the date window annoys the hell out of me, especially the way it forces the number 15 inwards destroying the symmetry of the inner numerical ring, if there was a no date version of it i would be all over it, a few years ago i splurged on the bb36 instead, which has a perfect symmetrical gloss black dial, its not a field watch, but you could argue, its pretty much an everything watch

The glare on this watch is very high. Such a shame they didnt add an AR coating.

I have the manual winding one. Your lume is great compared to mine. This watch has 3 major negatives. The lume sucks so bad I don't even know why they bothered with This sorry lume. Second the lugs are too long for a 38 mm watch. 3rd and the worst, the 5 min pips are not aligned at all! If I knew that I would never had gotten this watch. Then there is another I just remembered. You set it like you do on a quartz. You go past the minutes, and the come back to it to set it. Even then It may take a lot of true to get It perfect. Just like most quartz there is play in the hands. It is very accurate, but for a Swiss watch this is sorry quality! I have to say that a cheap Seiko SNK809 is a higher quality watch on all the details. When I look at all online pictures of this watch, every one has the same misaligned 5 minute markers! The only reason I bought this watch in the first place is this was the cheapest option for pure manually wound watch out there that was supposed to have good quality.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m surprised to hear all of that about the mechanical Khaki. I’d really like to see one in person and evaluate it myself.

If you must, start at the 4th minute, skipping the long and tediously repetitive preamble.

Two criticisms : one, madly excessive redundancy in the first five minutes. Positively maddening! And second , look at this phrase : " et cetera." Does it appear to say "eck cetera" to you, because that is how you pronounce it. That, too, drives me up a wall. Please learn, and try to avoid mispronunciation. It diminishes your credibility.
