To me, this song is Burr's defining moment. It explains so clearly the differences between Burr and Hamilton and why they could never really resolve their issues. Hamilton has nothing to lose - he's already lost everything important to him and all he has left is the legacy he leaves. Burr is his parents legacy, and because of that he feels an obligation to uphold their name. He has a fear of failure that holds him back and resent his contemporary.

You know what would be an interesting dynamic that I hadn't thought of before? A Phillip that tries to uphold his fathers legacy the same way Burr does. I know he did challenge a dude to a duel for his fathers honor, but imagine if he took a more Burr approach knowing that anything he did would be a mark on his fathers reputation

I know Satisfied is most people’s favorite and it’s truly stunning but to me, it’s this song that’s really the pinnacle of the musical. It’s so easy to connect to, it’s a beautiful solo number that pulls the curtain back on our antagonist and what he’s really feeling, and then of course Leslie’s voice and acting is just impossible to look away from. It’s my top song and it always has been.

To me the theme of this song is universal. “Death doesn't discriminate Between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep living anyway. We rise and we fall and we break And we make our mistakes.” I mean, really. A monumental song, perfectly performed. Doesn’t get better for me.

“I am not standing still, I am lying in wait” Love that line, and it says so much about how Burr thinks of himself as opposed to how others see him. Really love the (lack of) choreography in this piece as well - it’d be really tempting to have the company jump up and start moving around when the music kicks in, but I love that they all stay there, just watching

I like how you said that the company is just watching, because that's essentially how Aaron Burr feels at this point in time going forward. That history already has it's eyes on them and he's feeling the weight of inadequacy next to Hamilton but knows that there's more for him, so he must wait.

What I love most about that section of the song is that he seems to be trying to talk himself into it--this is what he wants to believe about himself but at the same time he knows that if he really believed that about himself he would take more chances and step out more boldly. Superb!!!

I agree with you MDP about his stillness at the beginning of the song. But his stillness is not just deadpan, it more like Olympic sprinters in the blocks waiting for the Starters pistol. They emit an energy even while they are still. We are holding our breath with anticipation of what is to come.

His performance is incredible all the way through and this song is really genius. I do love Leslie Odom Jr's subtle acting, and so appreciate being able to see it up close because it adds so much subtext. One of my favorite moments acting wise is after the line "I am inimitable. I am an original." He closes his eyes and nods to himself. It's a mantra that he is reaffirming. He needs to because he is doubting himself so deeply, but this was how he was taught to rise, and it has to be right, right? I'm definitely a Burr more often than a Hamilton, so I really relate.

I've been OBSESSED with Hamilton since the movie came out. Having been unable to see the production live, this film has at least given me a glimpse as to why this musical has achieved the reputation that it has and why it is completely justified. I think I've played the soundtrack to Hamilton at least a couple of times a week every week since the middle of this year and I just can't get enough of it or the performances of this remarkable cast. I love those little touches. My favorite one is how at the end when he sings “Hamilton is the one who died, but I’m the one who payed for it” Hamilton in the background is slowly walking away and up the stairs and stops, steps back down a step and turns to stare at Burr, like “uhm.. excuse me, wtf did you just say?” Lol It’s so good. Lin really is a genius and there is so much to appreciate in rewatches.

This song makes me cry every single time because of the unbelievable acting skills of Leslie. I absolutely love that he starts out very rigid and controlled, then by the first chorus he loses his control a TINY bit - which he tries to correct by closing his eyes and shaking his head just slightly - and then by the end truly comes to life and lets go. I’ve made my fam watch this song so many times and they never seem as awe struck as me. Knowing that there are other Hamilton freaks out there makes me feel way better. 🙃

I take a slightly different interpretation on this. In some ways yeah he does wait for it and that is part of what he's doing but I mean he approached Washington first. So for me this song feels so much like a every time I try to do what Hamilton does I get knocked on my ass and every time he does it he wins. So yeah I am going to hold back I am going to wait for it and I am going to watch from my moment. Because Hamilton seems to be able to win no matter what he does no matter who he pisses off no matter what happens and I just can't do that I'm not that person so I'm going to play a different game. I think it is good to remember that within this character you also have the historic reality that this man becomes the vice president. Hamilton cannot actually achieve the same political heights that Burr accomplishes in his life. But where I connect to this song is in this idea that every time I try to put myself out there the way other people do I don't get the same results. I'm not that person I'm just not Hamilton. I'm done pretending that I have to be to get what I want so I'm going to wait for it and I'm going to get it in my own time, in my own way. Let's not forget he gets the girl and he has beautiful children and he gets to live a fairly amazing life by all standards. He just learns he has to do it in his own way and I feel like for me when he gets to the climax of the song he's coming to this realization that I don't have to be Hamilton to get what I want in my life and I'm tired of trying.

Thank you! This hit me, and I found myself nodding a lot whilst reading - sometimes you look at what other people get away with, wondering why in the world they would, and then you think you wanr to give it a try, fail misserably and wonder WHY?! Finding out who I really am and what I want and what I am willing to do to get it, is probably the hardest thing I had to learn and I am still at it *sigh* It seems so much easier to just look at others and think that THIS is whar I want, THAT is how I want to be...

I agree with the overall point you are making here, however the political heights that Burr achieves fall flat of what Hamilton was able to achieve, because the office of the Vice President, especially under Jefferson would not yield the same political power, as Hamilton was able to amass as Secretary of the Treasury under Washington - in two presidential terms that Washington served, Hamilton was able to shape the future of America as much as, if not more than most presidents, while at the same time he started from a much humbler beginning than Burr and was an immigrant as well. So while both people were outstanding and very complex, I recognize that Hamilton was more successful than Burr in many areas. However politically Burr was more akin to the now established political behavior than Hamilton, and in the present day the more accomplished would be Burr, rather than Hamilton.
@misspriss2482
@misspriss2482 3 жыл бұрын
@@mr.tutelloni It depends on how you define success. Hamilton did achieve more politically, but his legacy will forever be tainted by the Reynolds pamphlet. There was a PBS documentary that came out a while ago about the making of Hamilton and a general brush-up of historical context (someone uploaded it to KZbin, if you type in "PBS Great Performances: Hamilton's America" it should be the first result) and I would go so far as to say it should be required viewing for anyone who wants to watch Hamilton and understand, not only the history behind the musical, but also the meaning behind the phenomenal storytelling and character narratives that are going on all throughout the show. One of my favorite parts of the documentary is when Lin is talking about his intention behind writing "Wait for It", and I'll simply quote him, because it's so beautifully said: "If Hamilton's response to loss is to go as fast as he can, Burr's response to loss is, "I'm not gonna do anything until I know it's the right move. I'm alive, other people I love are dead; there's a reason for that.""

The most genius part of the while song is if you notice. The entire song all Burr does is tilt and move his head while standing completely still never moving. This perfectly represents Burr's actions throughout the entire production up until the last third of the second act. All he does is allow things to happen to him, never fighting to achieve anything, never attempting anything more ambitious then joining the revoultion and in turn the US government. Even when Hamilton stole opportunities from right below Burr's grasp all he did was let it happen. That is until the room where it happens where he finally realizes he will be forgotten if he does not do something. This is perfectly represented and forshadowed in wait for it. Burr only begins moving right at the very end the words "life doesnt discriminate" cause him to finally move for once, but not only does he move he begins rushing up and down the stage violently waving his arms representing his partial realization that he has to do something or Hamilton will take all of Burrs possible opertiunities from him. It also foreshadows the things such as the election of 1800 in which Burr begins to win over public opinion in an attempt to achieve presidency

This is my favorite song from Hamilton and Leslie Odom Jr is second to none. Thanks for reviewing this one!! I was wondering if you cut the songs for copyright purposes or for time? Just curious, I've noticed it in some other videos, too.

What I just really love about this is at the very end he is waiting for something more to happen but the song is over and he drops his hands in defeat because there is nothing to wait for anymore. He waits for something that never comes.

I love the ending and how it's this soft note versus a note that is held or belted. And Leslie's controlled performance is so perfect.

I can’t say enough how much I love this song, it encompasses everything we go through in life as well as how we feel about ourselves, “death doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints, it takes and it takes and it takes,” means more now since the death of my brother in May, he was very much a Christian man who loved the Lord and his family.

The look on his face in the opening number after he says "I'm the damned fool who shot him" gave me goosebumps. Still does, and it was what sucked me in. He's an amazing actor.

this actually is my personal favorite song in all of Hamilton, the fact that it's Burr reflecting on everything he went through up to now and comparing it to Hamilton and questioning how Hamilton is succeeding while he himself is not is awesome and I feel a lot of people can relate to that in someway.

So the first time I watched Hamilton, I was a bit confused because Burr's character is so stiff in his scenes. Then this song hit and not only is it something I can relate to on a level that I just can't on a lot of other Hamilton songs (no offense meant, every song is a banger, but Battle of Yorktown isn't something my 2021 self really identifies with on a daily basis haha) but when we see Burr actually break out of his stiff, standing by, passive shell, there's so much passion, literally the emotional vulnerability that Hamilton is practically begging him to show for the whole musical. (Of course, Hamilton's 'bare everything to the world' approach is just as flawed, but that's another matter.) I just really love Leslie Odom Jr's performance in this musical so much. The whole cast is so charismatic honestly but imagine making the character that shoots the protagonist be a likeable, sympathetic character.

this is my absolute favorite from Hamilton. there is so much nuance in Leslie's performance here, even the way he seems like he is literally holding his breath after he sings each verse like he is waiting for validation; it's just brilliant! It took me a while to get the last part, I’ve been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack since 2016 but only this year did i understand that at the end he was saying “wait for it” like there’s something coming up or something’s about to happen but nothing does and the song ends. I mean really it’s not that special but just the way the lyrics were made instead of “i’m willing to wait for it” lmm made it “i’m willing to...” “wait for it” i remember the time i realized it i panicked because i got chills from how amazingly that line was crafted and used.
