Those de10 injection pumps are notoriously intolerant of dirty fuel or fuel with water. Someone with the Deere service software should be able to hook up to it and see the cycles on the pump solenoid and see if it’s junk. Alterations you could go to the bone yard and get a jdb mechanical pump from like a 6400 and slap on there and bypass all the electronic stuff. Your local diesel injection could likely test it or area diesel but expect to probably spend$2k if that is what it is.

Mine did that once it would spin over till the battery would die, ended up being the solenoid in the dash that had gone bad. Guess it had something to do with the fuel shutoff.

Love the 310 videos. Glad you're back at it. Couple of suggestions. Set you're throttle at idle and while cranking ease on it up to half throttle. The white smoke tells me you're getting fuel, but maybe too much. I know it's not cheap, but have your injection pump bench tested at a local diesel shop. Probably charge you around $250 to $300 bucks to test it? Also you can have your injectors pop tested for about $10 each. Good luck.

Hank my quick comments, tank to transfer pump and filter all look good. All that white smoke means some fuel is getting to the engine. Typically you bleed nozzles at the nozzle so the lines fill but fuel should come out at significant pressure. Those nozzles probably crack at 5000 psi. So if fuel is dribbling out, follow the procedure to remove the injection pump and send it to a diesel shop. They will pump stand test it and repair if necessary. Before you remove the pump follow the procedure to get the engine timing correct it makes reassembly easy. I would be glad to talk if you want to speak thru anything.

See if it has a check valve on the return line of the fuel injection pump. I had trouble with a truck that wouldn’t start and the return check valve had become gummed up and wouldn’t open. It will not run if the return line is clogged. Might be worth looking into. This is something you don’t commonly think of as being a problem. This was on a stanadyne pump which I think your backhoe uses as well.

I know on the old caterpillar diesels there is a small plug that you un screw just a bit for it to be loose and diesel will come out behind each plug and then you open the lines at the injectors and make sure there is a lot of pressure there so no skips on the stream and a hard stream (make sure you do not touch the stream because that is very high pressure and it will inject diesel into your blood stream though your skin) and if it has skips in the stream or bubbles air is being introduced somewhere and is the stream is not a lot of diesel I bet that cut off switch works but possibly jammed. Hope this helps some.

Any update on getting your pump bench tested and injectors tested at sane time , I know with diesels on my landys 2.5 turbo the pump if it not giving out at right time the correct fuel needed and your injectors are not functioning right you can’t crank away fir a month of Sunday’s , one way we use to try if we where having a hard time getting it bleed was to tow the vehicle and bump start it that way nit a great way but worked but I would dig deep in your pockets if you haven’t and get the pump and injectors tested before going any further . Quick comment. The fuel system can ONLY draw air from the fuel tank side of the lift pump. Beyond that point is pressurised so will cause a leak from unions etc. You need to make sure all connections from the tank to the lift pump are completely airtight first off then loosen the bleeding nipple on the injection pump, hand prime it until you have no air coming from the nipple. Once free of air, you need to put 12v to the solenoid (shutoff valve) on the rear of the pump to allow fuel to flow through the injection pump. Providing you have compression and you loosen the injector pipes AT the injectors to bleed them up, the engine will fire. If not, I suggest replacing the shutoff valve. Good luck. NB. On some of these rotary pumps there is a further gauze filter in the infeed pipe of the injection pump UNDER the union once the infeed pipe has been removed. You need to take the union off the pump to access it. It won't be the 1st time, due to lack of fuel filter service/changing that this gauze screen is full of crap and won't allow the volume of diesel flow into the injector pump.

Does it have glow plugs? You’ve got white smoke which usually means you’ve got fuel going into the cylinders but no heat or compression. If it’s running off ether then ya comps good. If it has glow plugs I’d be pulling the glow plugs out and testing them. Or even give the glow rail direct voltage and manually glow it then kick it in the guts. I’m not to familiar with the Deere’s but that’s how I go about it day to day in the shop.

Hey Hank, Probably not the overall problem, but she sounds like it needs more cranking amps, it sounds slow. Is this machine suppose to have more than one battery or perhaps a much larger 12v battery with more CCA? Perhaps consider two batteries tied together in parallel, this maintains 12v but doubles the cranking amps.

Looks like you have a Standadyne injection pump. These pumps need a free return for fuel overfow. They usually have some form of relief valve or return side restrictor in order to maintain proper case pressure. If the return becomes blocked, case pressure builds until it meets transfer pressure. At this point the movement of the pumping plungers becomes restricted and the engine simply dies. When case pressure reduces, the engine will restart and run until the condition returns, usually in a much shorter time span. Try removing the return line from the top of the pump, start the engine and see if fuel seems to exit the fitting reasonably freely or not, and does the engine continue to run, or die as before. If your problem is supply or starvation, the engine will not start back up quickly after it dies, it will crank and stumble for a while. If you have constant voltage to the pump shutoff coil during all this it's probably not electrical. The coils don't usually fail in the manner you described, they either work or they don't. FOUND THIS ON A TRACTOR ISSUE SITE. DID you See if Fuel Exits Return ? Love your Videos

Those DE fuel pumps can be hard to bleed off and i do know those take a hex key to time them and those pumps run $1400-2000 if my memory is correct .. Also the lift pump should be putting 2-3 lbs of pressure . I also do know the governors can fail and come apart and plug the return line on injection pump. i have also seen water contamination cause the plunger to stick in the off position. otherwise maybe more cranking speed to start ... Or just has a lack of compression by the smoke

I have a few thoughts..it would be wise to check fuel pressure coming out of injection pump...seeing you bypassed fuel pump with an electric pump..no need to ck pump pressure. Also..those rubbers on the fuel lines are just cut off pieces of fuel line..just like on international trucks..just buy rubber fuel line next time . Another thought was..is the oil pressure sending unit on the block faulty ? If your machine has an ecm and the sending unit isnt sending signal to the ecm..it will never start..the ecm sends signal to the pump to open . I'm not sure about the 310..but on IH trucks..the line going to that plastic prescreen you guys cleaned..there could be a bulky fitting..in that fitting..there is a rubber ball that acts like a check valve..sometimes the deteriorate and get stuck..to take it out you poke it with a pick and replace it . Another idea..tho im fishing here..does the injection pump have an ipr valve ? Im thinking in truck terms more than tractor here lol . I've replaced several injection pressure regulator valves (ipr) and many times it can be just the o-rings are broke on them or a chunk of debris inside them . One other thought..i have seen the fuel filter spin on adaptors with hairline cracks..many times not visible to the eye..perlaps take the line off the electric fuel pump and run air pressure to the line and ck for fuel leaks..also get a squirt bottle with soapy water and spray the lines going to the pump . These are things to try..but i think i'd start with checking the injection pump pressure first.

I agree Hank, john deer parts are expensive to replace. I had a long time friend of mine, Robert Barrier. He had a big john deer tractor, sold it. Says it was just to expensive to maintain. Everything is expensive nowdays Hank, going to get worse.

Had trouble on a 8600 Ford diesel tractor. The vent for the fuel cap was plugged up. You may be correct about pump not making enough pressure. John Deere should know what numbers you should be seeing.

i had a problem with a john deere track hoe it ran good and then it wouldnt idle up and stall out. loosen the idle screw and try starting it . if it starts it will leak diesel at that idle screw. screw it back in and it would stall. i found where the return line comes out of the injector pump, take the line out and remove the fitting from injection pump. there is a glass bulb in there that will clog up. i got a fitting that was straight thru and it ran like a champ if the return is not returning fuel to the tank it will not run

Well try a high pressure fuel pump just to see if it's that and check the timing just to eliminate them issues .but try cracking the cylinder lined till you get a steady flow coming out cause just drinking isn't enough to start it so there may be still air in system cause you had alot of big air things apart that's spose to be fuel lol so might take a lil while to get the air out of it and check the main fuel line from tank there could be a inline filter clog but put a air hose whith rag wrapped around it to seal it and blow air in fuel tank and see if it blows any crap out if doesn't hook it up and do it while trying to bleed the lines and stuff .cause it sounds like a partial clog or still air in lines ..

Agree with others, bleed at the injectors. If the lines are full of air, that takes an awful lot of push to clear that out, and the pump will not be able to do it. Possibilities/suggestions, If that doesn't work ... or you can't beg help from Brian (bcbloc02) ... I'm not familiar with those injection pumps, but if it's a rotary similar to a Bosch VE ... Plunger return springs could be broken/shattered. Best to have it professionally rebuild, or you can try it yourself IF you are brave/broke enough. If that did happen ... or you find anything broken inside, or metal shavings from something wearing, plan on cleaning or replacing a few (if not all) injectors. After repairing my pump, it would start and run, then lose two cylinders, then not run at all until I bled it all out again. Turned out, two of the injectors had loaded up with metal chips and were blocked open, enough that compression was feeding back to the pump and loading it with air. I found the culprits by removing the high pressure lines from the pump, filling the fitting on top of each injector with fuel, and cranking the engine (with the fuel pump shut off to avoid a big mess). Air bubbles showing up in those fittings was my clue. Good hunting! and remember to safeguard from the possibility of hydraulic injection (it's no joke).

You might be getting a dribble of fuel and not a spray of fuel diesel fuel needs to be sprayed in the mist to become combustible. Take one injectors out of the head hook a two one of the lines coming off of the injector pump but the end of the chapter in the cup so you can see it spray turn engine over make sure it's spraying not dribbling

I would say that you to check the compression of the engine or it will not cause auto ignition and run. So long as there is fuel in the injectors and fuel lines with no air in the lines it should run. The only other problem is the engine isn't getting enough air flow because of a bad filter or mouse nest in the engine.

I am being serious though all a diesel needs to run is air, fuel and compression. it will will run no matter what unless one of those pieces of the triangle is missing. Even if fuel is a problem you can start it with starting fluid but if it is a high compression engine it will blow it up.

17 yr mech that pump should squirt fuel out ,also those JD s and most have a screen on the injectors, or the injectors could be stuck, i have worked on alot of those type pumps and when you losen the line it should put out fuel by force, it's force or pressure that fires i injectors
