A friend of mine who is a diesel truck driver over-the-road driver told me years ago that the diesel we purchase is crap. He owned his truck and he told me he always uses Lucas gas and diesel treatment. 1 qt. per 100 gallons. I have been using it since then and no fuel issues. I have 3 diesel engines and no problems.

I had the same problem with my John Deere 5055. Made a video of it as well. I removed that filter element and replaced it with a 3/8" inline fuel filter, like a Fram G3. You would be surprises at the lack of information out there to keep our tractors working. Glad to see more people sharing their experiences and fixes. 🙂 Keep up the videos.

Same thing happened with my 5065E, I did the same thing you did. I now put diesel clear additive in every fill up. I also changed the fuel filter, the main cause was the inline fuel strainer within the tank.

I have a John Deere 790 tractor without a front bucket and a 3032E tractor with a bucket and so far I have not had major problems with either of them. The 790 tractor had one problem with a fuel line which I replaced and it was back in action.

The best way to avoid that type of fuel issue is to use a transfer tank with an extra fuel filter in line. I have an old 50 gallon B truck saddle tank with a GPI 12V pump with the LD in line cartridge/ canister filter. It stops 90% of trash getting into the tank. If water is a problem then they have a special waterblock element that I Know Works well.

Well done. I have 2 suggestions for you that might help. One, if you don't already have one. Get a set of nut drivers, the will save you a lot of work with those hose clamps. The second and probably more important, get a in line water separator filter to put on the outlet of your tank in the truck. This will help to make sure that you are feeding your tractors good fuel. Take care!

Always look to your local (most local) truck-stop for ideas and fixes too. Diesel-kleen is great for cleaning algae and bio-sludge from the fuel system. Everything I have that runs on diesel I run run a additive in the fuel to disapate the water, I also installed inline water and trash seperaters. This allows me to eliminate the in tank filter, where it starts. Then if I have problems I can look into the glass bowl to check and if need change the filters. This guarantees that it won't make it to the pump or engine, which could be very expensive. Good luck.

John Deere has a flaw in their fuel tank design. That filter should be about 2 inches or so off the bottom of the tank to allow for settlement and sludge to settle in. All diesel truck tanks have their pickup tubes several inches off the bottom and most of the time they are on level ground. Not like a tractor were it is running on rough terrain most of it's life were the fuel is sloshing back and forth.

Hi Josh. Great video. If you want to reuse that fuel (their's no reason not to,) use two or three (paper Automotive Paint, very fine mesh,) Paint strainers. Use the paper strainer's, inside a plastic fuel funnel.) If I remember, correctly that mesh ( (paper Automotive Paint Strainers) works out to 8 microns or less filtering. I think a human hair (0.004(ish) inches.) is much thicker, just to give some scale.

Your brother is IMPORTANT to America, to the Corps and to ME TOO. Anything I can do, I am willing to do. I would be pleased if I may help a Marine to regroup and return home. As Americans who love this Nation and want what it CAN BE, we must work together to preserve what is of greatest value: our own people, especially every hero who has worn this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defense_Service_Medal during a time of National Emergency. I joined voluntarily on my 18th birthday.

I have an acquaintance who had to replace half his engine and fuel system because of algae. He flushed everything over and over, used every cleaner in the book and even after that he got build up and engine/power problems because of a gunked up diesel pump.

You can reuse the fuel you took out just use a funnel with a filter in it to catch the trash in the fuel. The funnel we use to put fuel in our tractor has a filter in the bottom. It slows down the speed of filling but you catch all the trash. It dose not work on water or any moisture in the fuel.
