An amazing season in Australia is resulting in higher than average invasive feral pig / hog numbers. With the abundance of grass and feed crops for these feral animals to raid, pest control via shooting is a successful measure. Using an ATV, 308 Winchester rifle and thermal equipment is a huge asset in gaining an advantage and getting hammer down on the pigs. Join me on this shooting trip where I put a dent in the population of an area I regularly frequent. I also filmed a few fantastic long-range killshots with my 6.5PRC on feral goats to use as trail camera bait for foxes and wild dogs.
I'm shooting the following rifles in this video:
* 308 Winchester - Ruger American Predator 18". Fitted into a MDT Gen 2 LSS chassis and running reloads with 150 grain Hornady SST projectiles. My thermal scope is a Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50.
* 6.5PRC - Bergara B14 HMR Wilderness, Athlon Cronus BTR Gen 2 4.5-29x56mm scope.
All the animals shot in the video are introduced, invasive feral species in Australia. These animals are being culled for pest control purposes. Whilst this is labelled a hunting video a lot of this footage is purely pest control shooting. There is no "fair chase" other than shooting straight and true resulting in the most ethical kills possible. I'm performing this role with professional equipment for property owners who grant me access and require assistance.

Always enjoy seeing animals say their final goodbye when they don't belong here. Some nice bloody sizes too. Thanks Nath, every one dead is one less alive. Getting lost at night brings back memories of trying find my way back after I lost sight of the flood light I would leave on front and back of the farm house. Was 24000 hectares but I could usually see it from a few k's away every ten minutes or so. Took me an hour of paddock and scrub bashing aswell as getting stuck driving down a creek bank I didn't see in a chopped Datsun 200B. Only got 4 foxes and a couple of cats that night.

Nice point about the light on the vehicle. I use a solar garden light ( el cheapo Bunnings $2 type) mounted on the top of the pole of my orange flag on my 4x4. My step dad walked around the country ( literally, the entirety of Highway 1) a few years ago, having previously walked from Freo to Melbourne, and a couple of years later, from Melbourne back to Freo. I set him up with the same setup on his buggy he pushed ( modified jogger pram) as he was starting to walk around 4am to avoid walking in the heat of the day.

Happy New Year Nath, mate that was an awesome video. Whilst some people don't realise the expense and the effort that you have put into producing this channel, I now have an even greater appreciation. The planning, the equipment and the actual hunting all take a lot of time and effort not only before and during but also afterwards in the editing studio. A Hearty Well Done for your fantastic contribution.👍👍😎

Hi Nathan, great to get you back. I hope that you were able to take a break with your family over the new year. Yours is the only shooting channel I watch/am subscribed to because I respect your standards and ethics. Feral control is the bottom line or the occasional hunting for food. No slaughter as I have seen in the past with some channels. I also find your explanation of the countryside interesting, so keep up the commentary on the local environment. The lambs reckon that if they stand next to you then they are safe and won't get shot or attacked by feral dogs. Looks like they could have been bottle fed orphans. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Was nice to see that quick 2nd shot on the goat, i dont like to see critters suffer. Love that reticle mate. great for field use. Lotta guys use way too much clutter in the scope. Its a real pity we cant use sound suppressors for our culling programs. Frustrating as hell comeing onto a mob of roos feeding quietly, and only getting 1 clean headshot before the lot hit the bounce and bolt. Same with mobs of pigs. let one off and they scatter. makes it a lot harder to get their numbers down.

American here. I was hoping that one shot that you took with the two pigs and the premium .308 bullet would give you a "twofer", the rear one was almost eclipsed by the front one that you shot, I managed to get the pair with a single 180 grain Nosler partition bullet, but I know that mushroomed bullets don't always follow a straight path, it doesn't happen often, but it is SO satisfying when you can. I've heard that it is easier with an arrow or crossbow bolt, waxing the head and greasing the shaft helps penetration. But I'm not an archer, I have no personal experience on that. Happy hunting. 🙂

For 308W, I am a big fan of the 125gr Ballistic Tip bullets. They are extremely efficient varmint bullets on coyotes (about the same size as a wild dog). Broadside, a 125gr BT will produce a 3" exit hole in a 30lb coyote.

I ran 130gr Speer HP's for a time. Perfect broadside on pigs. Awful on an angled shots 😩. 150gr and above is what the 308Win needs to deck pigs running off at odd angles 💥

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Yeah, makes sense, I am sure pigs are much heavier built than a coyote, which are surprisingly svelt once you get the fur off them.

Every dead feral pig makes me happy. Your thermal work is amazing. I know nothing about hunting but have 2 questions. With the ATV, given some of those washouts your seeing would you consider some type of roll cage? Especially if on your own and isolated with no mobile coverage. Does the landholder or yourself harvest any meat or is it left where it falls? I've heard pigs will eat just about anything including a carcass.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the feral pigs are just carrion here. In Australia they can carry disease and parasites. Unless you are very careful at checking these animals it's not worth eating them.
