Have been wrenching on all kinds of equipment for a long time now. And yet I never tire of watching mechanical mechanisms, gears, clutches, sprockets, and splined shafts perform a mysterious dance of transmitting motion into work. Frank I know you are a pro. Would pass along one tip. The best all around penetrating oil I have found is used motor oil. I put the used oil in small squirt oil cans and then squirt that on everything, especially old crusty bolts. If works great and the price is right. Find you an Eagle brand ‘33’ Oil Can with the flexible spout. As I watch you pull wrenches on this shovel I am squirting every one of those rusty bolts with used motor oil in my mind….

Nice find frank. Im going out to a old saw mill tomorrow with my old man to work on a 1938 Michigan truck crane built by Allens Cranes UK. The house setup is very much the same. Air controls also

It’ll run, knock the pistons out n rering,hone n go! Those were built in Jackson mi if I’m not mistaken. My grandfather worked at Clark equipment running the boiler back in the 30’s.👍🏻

I would clean with wire brush and solvent the exposed threads before attempting the nut.

Just found this video / channel. I love hearing about old equipment for Michigan. At one point in my life I lived behind the big church at the end of Baker Street (West dead end of it) which was across the street from where the Diamond Reo truck plant used to be on Washington in Lansing. My Grandpa-in-law used to work there, and I enjoyed listening to his stories... Glad to American/Michigan made is outlasting many newer pieces of equipment.... From Lansing, Michigan. Have a couple buddies that are restoring Antique military vehicles to preserve their history. All these thing can be saved give time money and the biggest problem is storage out of the weather

The Soviet implementation of this kind of shovel is a early 30s STZ tracked tractor based Komsomolets with 0,35 m³ face shovel/backhoe bucket capacity and 2 tonnes crane. This is a most popular pre-war Russian light class universal shovel.

Nice shovel you never know there might be a few more at the bottom of a lake or burred some were. With the copper air lines on it you think there wont be as many air leeks as a machine with rubber air lines.

Rusty iron is a sickness, but it is one that we all volunteer to have. My brother freed up a badly seized engine without disassembly, got it running by making a spark plug adapter to fit his hydraulic port a power .Sprayed the cylinders with diesel fuel, then applied a little hydraulic pressure to each cylinder every day.Over the course of a month, he got each piston moving, bit by bit, flushing rust/ corrosion out, until it turned. Runs good. Excellent solution for engines that you won't find head gaskets for. My brother is a genius.

Great to see the odball old machines rescued. Those old side valves are just not fussy. It will run again even with some rust pits in the bore especially as you will not be working it hard.

Definitely it will run. Start by gently wire brushing the rust and junk out of the cylinders and around the valves. Soak everything in Kroil. And let it set, applying another layer every day for at least a week. After a week. Gently take a 2 oz hammer and tap the valves and tops of the pistons. Again adding another layer of Kroil. Don’t get in a hurry, let the Kroil dissolve the rust and everything will free up, including the rings 👍

These were built without computers. They were built with a huge amount of imagination and ingenuity. I always say that i am more amazed at the brain work of the people who built these machines than the final product. It is sad that the present generation of snowflakes have lost the ability to be useful. Useless is a better word. Can't teach common sense.

there was a unit very similar to this with a fordson tractor for power, at the wayne county fair in wooster ohio this fall. i think it might have been a michigan also. thought i took some pictures but l cant find them.

Good to see your hy hoe ! Spent many a year with mine digging on farms and demoing houses around town. I demoed about a dozen Standard oil of ohio bulk tank farms removed all the underground tanks! That 4-53 is why I can’t hear that well now!! Hy Hoe. Hy Hoe it’s off to dig I go! When it was 10 below 1 can of ether would get her running on 2 cylinders then go to breakfast by the time we got back she would be running on all 4 and I could start digging!!
