The full-back has reportedly said yes to a move to West Ham, but there is still plenty of work to be done between the two clubs before a deal is done. It will likely be a swap deal, with Flynn Downes going the other way.
Downes impressed on loan at the Saints last year, making 33 Championship appearances. Manager Russell Martin is desperate to secure the signing of the 25-year-old permanently, and he seems to be happy to sacrifice an important player in Walker-Peters to do so.
Both players are valued at around £15-20m, so it could mean a deal that is completed quickly. Lopetegui and Steidten are keen to get their business done early, and with pre-season starting soon, they will want to get the deal done for the 27-year-old as soon as possible.

Very interesting discussion. I was so engaged I forgot about commenting until you mentioned it. I think both the Czech lads had a good Euros myself, all things considered. I hope Lopetegui can pull some more out of them for West Ham; or at least give them a fair crack at adapting to his methods. Frankie's idea of a loan season at Soton again, to see how Dowes handles life in the Premiership, isn't a bad one. I'd like to know what Tim & Lopetegui have discussed about him. Balancing business against talent, stats against £s can't be easy. I do think we need KWP, even if it does shift a shortage elsewher. Although, with Alvarez, Kudus, JWP & Creswell plus Guilherme, Earthy and Scarles, Lopetegui might be able to muddle through. All depends on who adapts to the playing system the best, and is actually fit to play. Overall, I'm in favour of KWP coming in, would prefer not to loose Downes, but finances and practicalities will win the day.

I don't think they are competing. There are many different types of CM now and most teams play 3 across the middle. The midfielders are young enough to be trained in different roles. We also need to have depth to rotate and to mix things up for different game types. To coin a few there are midfielders that specalise in holding, ball-playing/play-switching, box to box, traditional ball-winner, false 9, advanced playmaker/trequartista, and souczechia. Soucek is his own thing... so I invented a midfielder category .

Coufal will leave this summer. Anyone reasonable that offer first team football and a wage increase and he'll be off. Thankfully Steidten has been looking at young RB's to develop and bring in a the back up option some that could push KWP for a starting spot. Downes is an okay player but the money will likely be closer to 10m plus KWP and Ings will be sold separately to them as well. We have good targets for the back up DM role that wont cost a huge amount of money and all would be an upgrade on him. Thanks for your time with us Downes but good luck down South.

Walker Peter would fit in quite well with how Lopetegui likes his full backs to play and getting him in would add some cash to the transfer budget that may help to get some of our 1st choice targets over the line. Shame if Downes does move on. Never really got a fair crack of the whip under Moyes and when he did play he was often out of position. Personally, I like KWP. Might get confusing with JWP though and any other acronyms we want to add like BTW and FWIW

Ok, this proposal sorts the RB out but leaves a big hole in CM - Alvarez will miss pre-season, at least, but is bound to get suspended sooner than later leaving a critical position exposed and we already know that Soucek and JWP don't cut it there - got to hope Steidten has achievable targets in DM

I like the idea of loaning Downes for another season as part of the deal. It would give us a season to see how well he does at Premier league level. A loan fee would probably be 4-5m. I would think Downes is worth 20m to Southampton and Walker-Peters is worth about 12m with one year left on his contract. I think 8m plus Downes on a season long loan would be a good deal for us.

Remember, Vlad has just 1 year left on his contract too, so it’s future planning for that position. I think it’s a good deal for both parties. A fullback we need and one that suits the style of football Loppy tends to use, as he likes pacy fullbacks. And Downes isn’t quite good enough to be a regular starter for us, so makes sense for him to play football somewhere else. I’m not entirely convinced Downes is anything more than another Josh Cullen. Give it a year and he could well be back in the Championship if the Saints go down and he’ll be all forgotten about. Still, he played some good games in the earlier Europa Conference games for us. I wish him well. ⚒️

Kwp seems to be pacey and techically proven english PL defender, that we can get on the cheap. Leaves us with funds for the striker, which is an absolute must. Might regret letting downes go though. Not suited to moyes, but may be suited to Lopetegui. Lastly, pray that we can offload soucek (cant pass), ings (cant run) and cornet (injury prone) now.

Is KWP better than Coufal? Only seen him when we play the saints but he didn't look great? and the fact we're also sacrificing Downes who could do a job for us under Lopetegui? Not sure what the fuss is about. I wasnt impressed by FD in the PL with WH, despite his limited time. I always felt he was a champ/bottom 6 player. Getting KWP to push Vlad as a replacement for BJ + 5 mill, and a home grown is a gift! What people are forgetting is we're not skint; we're hamstrung by FFP. We have to get creative in the trans market, in order to have the ability to replace Aguerd, Zouma, Antonio/Ings. 100% we should bite Southampton's arm off up to armpit :)

I like the KWP link. To me he has always been a solid right back. But, I also like Downes. I think with the right coach, he might become a really good premier league player. I would love for downs to get a real chance. Butt One of the reasons we have such a big rebuild to do, is because we have been too sentimental towards certain players.
