I have no doubt at all that Ol' Whitey's movement would have been caused by currents, probably caused by the divers themselves, but that doesn't matter. If I go diving around in a shipwreck and an actual corpse starts following me around, my body's going to join him when my heart gives out.
@FinnMiaBelle
@FinnMiaBelle 4 жыл бұрын
Eric Romano there are legends, specifically with SAR (search & rescue) regarding recovery missions for bodies. Apparently, this is a very common thing to happen. The premise is what you suggest, that the divers whip up the debris & corpse when they are dragging the lake floor, and it causes the body to drift towards the search team members, but of course, some believe there is more to it than that; that there’s a paranormal element to it. Well never really know I guess, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Two corrections to this video: 1. Probably everyone caught the fact that the St Marys River connects Lake Huron with Lake Superior, not Erie. 2. Fewer people probably caught that Grand Marais, Michigan is not at the western end of Lake Superior. However, I’m guessing that Hammerson Peters meant to say that part of a cork life preserver washed up in Grand Marais, Minnesota.

@@generaleerelativity9524 funny in that its peculiar. Its just amazing that an area that many would consider pretty far from the oceans is navigable to ships so massive through humanities ingenuity. Having never seen the Great Lakes and always living a pretty good hop away from them I've lived my younger years imagining the Great Lakes as just larger versions of the man made reservoirs common in the southern US. It wasnt until I got into the industry did I learn how the Great Lakes were more inland seas than Lakes. I did not know there was ocean access to the great lakes until then either. So yeah, its kinda funny in that I would never have expected to find that kinda place there. I think however you just troll the net looking to anomalously find things in peoples comments that perhaps remind you of things you've said or did that bullies attacked you for. That's not why they attacked you though, they attacked you because your weak and cowardly where they are just cowardly... Physically strong cowards attack weaker cowards. Its why standing up to bullies is so effective They only go after the weak.

I really enjoyed this video! So informative, well narrated (also pronouncing foreign names accurately), and informative. Lakes can be just as dangerous as the ocean, it saddens me to hear of all these lost ships, and wish their crews to rest in peace. Maybe the S.S. Bannockburn will be found one day soon. We ought to respect all these vessels as the graves of the sailors who bravely sailed in them.

When I was a kid I met a guy who had been crossing a flooded street with a friend. His friend was a bit behind him but they were talking to each other. When his friend didn't respond he turned around and his friend was gone, His friend could not have gotten out of the street in that time so he turned back and nearly stepped into an open man hole. The flood water had blown the cover off and his friend had fallen in. He said it was very weird, because his friend was there one second and gone the next. His body was never recovered. The storm drains went directly into the Bay, just a couple of miles away. I imagine the crew of that other ship felt the same way about EF.

Fort George, NotL, Ontario: somehow, my friend & his brother were alone on a summer night, decades ago. Brash & in their 20s they thought just sneaking in was cool. As they sat on a hill, quietly contemplating the gravitas of where they were, they heard something that made them run for their lives. Paul told me that it was as If a thousand men had surrounded the hill below them. The brothers had felt a breeze then heard a massive OHM, a low, bass & baritone chorus of a thousand men sang a low, loud, lament that terrified the two. They looked at each other, each wide-eyed with fear & confirming something even worse - they'd both heard the same thing. Wow. What a story, eh?

Isn't there a famous shipwreck during the civil war (possibly another war) in the great lakes? One where lots of gold was lost in the wreck and people still look for it today?

As an American, this title doesn't bother me one bit as all of these sank in Canadian waters. We share them and if ya don't like it, too bad. One exception may be le Griffon, as she may be in lake michigan.

It's strange the the Great Lakes are the International Border. I live on the shore of a port in N.E. Ohio and see Lake Erie as U.S. since I was born in Erie, PA it would seem to me my lake is U.S. Then there is Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who was a hero in the war of 1812 and battle of Lake Erie (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Hazard_Perry). I am also a SCUBA diver and even though I have dived many wrecks in Canadian waters from U.S. most have been from U.S. charters The biggest mystery of lake Erie is the loss of the Bessemer & Marquette II. My father retired from the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co. and the boats did American products Iron and Coal. All that being said when I go to "the falls" I always stay on the Canadian side. I used to drift dive the Niagara river above the falls from a Canadian charter. So we share the lakes. The title would be more appropriate without the "Canadian". .

Canadian Great Lakes is a reasonable way to describe the portion under Canadian jurisdiction. We also say Canadian prairies, Canadian West, etc. I'm surprised that would be contentious.

An excellent video! In addition to the causes of the War of 1812 mentioned, some sources mention that Napoleon had given the US the impression that he was adopting policies more to the liking of the US. In reality he had not changed these policies, or rescinded the Orders of Empire. Fooled by Napoleon, the United States declared war on Great Britain.

On the sinking of the Fitzgerald, these old lake freighters loved to split in half under the right circumstances. Happened to both the Carl D. Bradley and Daniel J. Morrell, and I believe it also happened to the Fitzgerald. Something happens, it takes a hit from a sand bar or shallow reef, maybe it's just a bit old and in need of refit, a bit of both, it weakens the hull. Then it gets into a storm. Metal fatigue from the constant flexing and bowing as it transitions from wave peak to the trough between becomes too much and breaks the ship's back, both segments take on water rapidly and sink before an evacuation order can be given.

It also doesnt help when the captain doesnt have all of the hatch clamps closed. The Fitzgerald wreck has been photographed with many of the clamps undone, which is what let water in and began that chain of events.

I don't believe that the sinking of the Fitzgerald had anything to do with hatch covers or any sort of crew complacency. I think the two rouge waves drove her to the bottom, instantly.

If you dont get the champagne bottle broke on the first try throw the whole boat away, you've just cursed the thing. Per sailing superstition, it's a bad omen like changing a ship's origional name.
