glad you like ... one of the great features of the new B-3 is that it has an 'overdrive' control on the organ. This works very well when recording at lower volumes. The sound on this movie is straight out of the box. I purposely kept the Leslie 122 below half volume to show how good this beast is. To get this kind of sound with a tonewheel B I used to have to get the 122 in an isolation booth and really crank it up. This is another reason why I prefer this new B to the retro gear .. Cheers Malc

Fantastic sound! and great playing of course! The New B3 really sounds like the real thing. This was recorded 12 years ago, but it sounds better then videos of the newly released SK Pro and also better then the XK5 . Must be the real multi contact keyboards with natural key click, same as in the vintage tone wheel Hammonds.

Great stuff. I have a '71 B3 with a 715 Leslie. Looks like you have one of the newer modals. I'd really like to try one out, but just have never had a chance. I've heard good & bad comments about 'em. I really like the sound of my older B3 though. I'm a retired barber. Been playin' a B for 45yrs. I'd like to hook up with a group like you guys. Keep on truckin'. Sounds fantastic. Sorta' like the stuff I play.....

I suppose that you are right in as much as modern versions of any retro item be it a vintage car, vintage amp, MP3 vs CD vs Vinyl ! is never going to nail it 110% but the new Hammond B-3's and XK's do a very credible and accurate job and offer reliability, and many other benefits of using modern technology. Also it is interesting that recently 3 of the top Hammond players in the world have actually asked for the New B-3 in favor of an original tonewheel for their gigs !
@davidgaines82668 жыл бұрын
Playing a B3 is as much about attitude and being a percussionist as it is anything else. Using the drawbars and Leslie would be right behind those two elements. Very nice example of ALL of the above!

No...it's about being a musician.
@dsgmusic887 жыл бұрын
Mitch Towne No duh. Didn't say it wasn't about being a musician, did I? I said, "It's as much about." You can be a classically trained virtuoso and not be able to make a B3 'talk' like this guy does. Playing a bunch of flashy licks does not a good B3 player make. Plus, if you don't know good registration, how to setup a Leslie, how to work the Leslie, use vibrato, use distortion, comp, and on and on, you are not going to be a B3 player, you will just be playing organ sounds. Go listen to some Jimmy Smith or Billy Preston to see what I mean. 🙂

@MalcDeakin14 жыл бұрын
Hi, The XK-3c uses the same VASE III sound generator as the New B-3. The main difference is that the New B-3 has the analogue multi contact keying system. This means that the 'keyclick' etc is natural just like a retro tonewheel. The XK-3c does not have this key contact system. BUT through the same 122 Leslie it is 'pretty darn good' taking into account the price and portability benefit of the XK. No .. it is not a B-3, but a very good compromise.
@Williamarlaud12 жыл бұрын
very cool
@classicalcheese12 жыл бұрын
he mentions in another video that it's exactly the same key system that would go into a b3, with 9 contacts as well

@MalcDeakin Hi. Right now I have the XK3c and the new Leslie 3300w - but I have just been offered a great price for the New B3-P (portable). Now I'm wondering if I get a better sound, if I buy the B3-P? Do you know a little about the diffences beside the analogue multi contact keying you just mentioned? Thanks :) Great playing

The portable New B-3 is still quite heavy but it does beak down in 2 mins, can be safely shipped on it side or even upside down and will easily fit into the back of an estate car. A B-3 chop tonewheel is still not that easy I think it is wrong of you to advise people to 'buy an old original' without at least first checking out the new Hammond's for themselves . After all ... That is only your opinion.

@MalcDeakin Love your stuff. I'm a beginner on a C3 that I recently bought although I play piano. I'm fascinated by your playing and would love to learn this style of funk, it's so percusive. I looked up your video and I noticed its from the UK. Is the DVD format universal or if not, is there a US version? And does that DVD show some of your techniques slowed down or is it all about just trying to find out what your doing from your jams?

Thanks for your comments T.C. Pfeiler Hmmm .... there is never going to be a solution that will satisfy everyone and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. There are good and bad original tonewheel organs and if you are on a tour using hire gear, its very much 'the luck of the draw' as to what you get. The new B-3's can be tweaked a little to suit individual tastes in vibrato character, leakage etc .. etc
