Hamster Elevator

I had ambitions to make an elevator for my hamster when I was an engineering student. I initially wanted to use counterweights and magnets. However, I think it would be best if I put a hamster wheel on the platform that was tied into a gear system that could raise and lower the lift slowly. But I wonder if a dwarf hamster could realize that one direction makes the elevator go up, and the other direction makes it go down. It would still be an interesting experiment.

But I think the wheel on the lift would have to be weighted in some way that hamsters usually do not experience. So I think it might require some getting used to by the test subject(s). Otherwise it would need to operate even more slowly with the gear ratio.
