Join physiotherapist, Shelly Yu, for an exercise series focused on hand and dexterity challenges associated with Parkinson’s Disease. Exercises in this series will target upper extremity movement, hand dexterity, grip strength, hand-finger coordination and overall arm function. As this is a hand and dexterity class, all exercises will be done in sitting- ideally in a chair without arm rests. Equipment to prepare for the exercise series include:
A chair without arm rests to sit in
A tea towel/ kitchen towel
A small cushion/pillow
We welcome all individuals with Parkinson’s to this webinar as well as their spouses and/or carepartners/caregivers, as they may benefit from learning more about the disease to assist in supporting their loved one.

Please note: Participation in the exercise program will be done at your own risk within your home. Please ensure you have the space needed to follow the exercises and that there are no obstacles or barriers in your way.

just sitting and wiggling your fingers is good for dexterity. i prolly wiggle my fingers three hours a day, often while doing other things like watching tv. and drumming on things is good, like your own body or the things around you

How often should I be doing this series of exercises?

Hi Penny! There isn't a set amount of repetitions you need to do, however the more the better! If the exercises are quite challenging for you and cause a great deal of fatigue, then I would recommend starting once a day then gradually build up your tolerance. You can also incorporate some of these hand movements in your everyday task, such as spreading out your fingers and hand as widely as you can every time you reach for an item in the fridge, or practice grasping objects of different shapes and sizes etc. The more you practice, the better! :-)
