The king of DIY thank you for all your great videos. I must live vicariously via others for I live in a small place and have room for only one 42 gallon bow front. I was doing some other researcher on lion fish and did not realized that people yeas ago released them into the wild in Florida and now they are taking over the reefs in that area. In one of your follow up videos on your lion fish it might be worth while to remind fish openers to never release a fish back into the wild especially when it is not there natural habitat.

I’m a reptile keeper and many reptiles need live food. I do enjoy observing my lizards’ natural behaviours, hunting being one of those. That said they are eating insects that are quickly dispatched and I don’t get joy from watching the insects die but from the reptiles being active, healthy and enriched. For snakes where feeding live is not essential and creates unnecessary stress and pain to the feeder I feed frozen thawed. Far too many KZbin channels glorify the killing of live animals by their pets.

Otto Mercer I totally agree most of the snakes I have kept ate frozen thawed but I had one snake that refused it and I had to feed live. I watched it the whole time to make sure he didn’t get hurt and sometimes ended up with a “pet” rat until the next time I tried to feed him.

I agree. Almost all lizards and pretty much every frog you can think of requires live insects. I think (hope) Joey was talking about feeding live fish/rodents to their pets which I agree is unnecessary and morally wrong. But insects are on a different level in my mind. They're not as intellectually aware as compared to fish and rodents. Almost every time a insect gets eaten it doesn't even see it coming and is usually dead in an instant. From what I've read hey can't excactly feel pain like most animals do.

I can honestly say that the vast majority of fish that are fed live fish, do not REQUIRE live fish- with some work. I keep large, predatory fish as well as my mini fish (and carnivorous plants) and have yet to keep a fish that I could not get off live. There are few exceptions. I agree with Joey that many (NOT ALL) folks who feed live, enjoy that aspect, but nutritionally speaking its not always the best choice, nor is it the safest choice. That isn't to say it can't be done responsibly, but it takes a lot of work to raise feeder fish well. I am glad you were able to get your lionfish off of live- great job.

To everyone making comments about how unethical it is to keep a wild-caught fish, please keep in mind that Lionfish are an EXTREMELY invasive species in the Atlantic right now. They are routinely gathered up and killed because they are destroying the ecostytems they've been released into. I would assume that this is where the majority of wild-caught specimens come from. Up to you which is the better fate for the fish or for the planet.

yet they LOVE my tank full of asian arowana.... a fish threatened with extinction. or the clown loaches i have...( all wild caught... everyones are haha) Some wild caught's i keep to preserve and possibly breed. Or to encourage others to, to help sustain them. OR to simply put a demand on invasive fish like the lion fish to help remove more from the wild. People pick and chose fight sand stances with VERY little real data or information. I dont mind seeing those comments... exposes more about their lack of knowledge than they think.

I’ve been down the same road with dwarf lionfish. The first I owned only took live freshwater ghost shrimp or mollies. I actually started a saltwater mollie tank as feeders for the lionfish but ended up not needing to go that route. Now I have a million saltwater acclimated mollies and at least one tank that is guaranteed to be algae free forever. I always use the same tongs and every feeding I tried sneaking a frozen krill on the tongs right after it took a ghost shrimp and touching it to the live rocks as if it were trying to hide. The lionfish always acted interested. It didn’t work until suddenly 3 weeks later...wham! After that I had no issues feeding that lionfish anything. I think the key is getting a fish that only wants live food to associate whatever tool you use to feed it with live food.

1. This was super educational thank you for sharing how you transition them 2. Have you been benching filled aquariums? Because good work man. 3. All those people who say that feeding their fish live is natural must also feed their cats 100% live prey. They are all just butt hurt about you’re valid points regarding the nutritional value and risk factors of live feeding. Not to mention in my personal opinion, the morality of it. There’s a reason I don’t stick my dog in a tiny room with a bunny for him to eat.
@roboorb8477
@roboorb8477 6 жыл бұрын
ACertainJustice the nutritional value part only applies to goldfish and the parasites applies only to poorly raised feeder fish(which to be fair is most because the mass demand). As for other animals if they spend anytime alone outside i can guarantee you they participate in hunting activities aswell especially cats. The only reason id agree its cruel is because the feeder fish is trapped and has no real chance to out smart its predator as it would have to in the wild. Human's have this better than animals attitude thats completely bullshit we raise animals solely to be slaughtered for food. Just because you dont have to kill the animal doesnt make it any different. Also its better for your fish because it nutures their instincts and gives them something to do other than float around and wait to be fed again. That being said i dont own any predatory fish and wouldnt use feeder fish either.

Hi Joey, Love your video. It takes me back to one of my snorkeling sessions in the Red Sea, I have about 1000 hours of snorkeling there, both in Egypt and Israel. One of my best was snorkeling at night off the hotel jetty, straight onto the reef, never touching the coral, obviously. So there I am, in the dark water floating above the reef, my husband behind me with an underwater torch, and a few over excited Russians cheering me on, just so I could get some great shots with my camera of Lion fish at night, the fish were calm and curious, but I never felt in danger, they were so beautiful. Another time I stayed with a couple of romantically involved lionfish, doing the mating dance, so exquisitely choreographed. Diane xxx

Great video Joey! I cannot count the number of fishing channels that decide to setup predator native tanks mistakenly feed goldfish to their bass,gills,gars etc etc and everytime I politely inform them of the anti nutrient aspect(thiamanase) regarding feeder goldfish I get burned at the internet stake. 20 years ago same thing regarding feeding goldfish to Gartersnakes,people just couldn't or wouldn't wrap their minds around it. By the way minnows are also in the Cyprinidae family,which encompasses Carps and Minnows so even a diet of just minnows can have adverse effects. In the wild bass for instance feed upon a wide variety of prey,everything from worms,shads, minnows,sunfish,crawfish to each other. In captive environments its vital that we do our level best to provide a varied diet as possible and with fish, quality prepared foods have to considered as well if possible. Predatory fish have higher brain functions thus they require a diet that helps to keep their visual cortex and eyes healthy,much like ourselves in fact. Another story about Anti-Nutrients, there is a chemical called Oxalic acid which is present in leafy greens such as spinach and kale, for lizards such as Iguanas, oxalic acids prevents the absorption of calcium and also prevents the conversion of vitamin D2 from plants into vitamin D3 which is necessary for skeletal development. Basically what happens is that when a diet is nearly exclusively one or two things such spinach and kale for example the animals die from metabolic bone disease and deformation of organs,shells, bones.eyes etc.

What about shrimp,talapia,snails for puffers. Everyone agrees with the feeders from the pet store but if we are trapping and rasing our own live foods what's the difference from your farmed talapia or flakes or pellets.the fact you don't see them die in front of you negates the fact that fish die to feed your fish. My fresh caught or raised minnows from here in northwestern Ontario are fresh and clean. Great conversation piece. I just hope people are ready to listen to both side open minded before calling us all sadistic psychopaths.

The king of DIY I think you were skilled,experienced and knowledgeable enough to find away to get your lion fish to not eat live food but some people aren’t and it would be sad to see a very rare and possibly important fish(not talking about a lion fish because they’re becoming a problem in the wild)die over a fish or other live food that has no significance and was created to die while also supplying jobs to the people that breed them.

Joey i love that you touched base on the down sides to feeding gold fish! In my turtle group on fb we have to explain all the time about thiaminase poisoning from feeding foods high in the enzyme.

Missa Mae i just raise goldfish because i like them. I tell you though i do see raising them as a challenge. I meen you have to try and find the healthy ones and keep them alive. It warms my heart when they do survive because i know they will have a better life then what they were intended for.

The worst part is its nothing new. Yet the people need explaining to are dead set against NOT feeding live goldfish... however they knowing about what they are really doing to their animals.

True but this problem isn't only in the fish hobby i know people with dogs that basically feed them food that will give them problems down the road. It just people being unwilling to learn. And if they do learn they don't care enough to change.

Never an easy choice to make but it seemed like a necessary step to get that bad boy to eat. Nice job.

Good stuff Joey! I got me a freshwater predator tank, rarely do I feed live fish for those reasons as well. Definitely not against it though.

not sure how it matters if the food is alive or dead at feeding, it winds up dead every time.

The king of DIY you actually didn't explain in depth. You made 2 arguments which almost anyone would agree with and are easily worked around in the hobby ,as you proved from using the Mollies. And then you made some joke about someone compensating for something. I would love a better explanation for this. Thanks Joey!

I learned a great lesson. Normally I wouldn’t even think to use live to kick start it and get him eating. But if I find myself in that position I’m glad to have seen this video 👍

Well, I had a pet bass but I had to move. I started to feed it live fish to get it ready for a release into a nearby pond since it’s a native species. I didn’t get any enjoyment from it but I saw it as necessary.

Hey king of DIY I want to say is that I have a couple cichlids. Well I want to say I know that feeder fish can introduce parasites and such so I normally don’t feed feeder fish but the fish love the live fish but I only use it to kind of supplement their diet.

That was quite a challenge! Clearly the process you used worked great! I never knew Lion fish were difficult to change to (non-live) fish. I agree with your thoughts on how un-healthy feeder goldfish are. The feeder fish tanks generally look like a cesspool! A little tough love for the lion fish will make him happier and healthier in the long run! Well done!

Me and my family have been keeping fish for years, the first time I saw someone live feed I was horrified. I could never keep one fish as a pet and another as food so I'm glad to see a influential fishkeeper such as yourself against it.

One time at work I was scrubbing algae off the glass in our floor tanks. I got distracted and moved my hand from one section to the other that housed a lion fish. It then brushed up against my hand. I about shat myself and fell off the ladder. He did not sting me just rubbed up against me. He must have liked me.
