Very informative video of a week diet on one of the most amazing fish out there. There's a reason they call it a Lion Fish..Just look at that body language. Cheers to that happy couple

Thanks, the volitan is admittedly my favorite of all fish, they put on such a majestic and beautiful display, and they become so interactive once they become used to being fed by us.

they are beautiful, but now that they have been released into waters that are not there natural home they are now considered villains and are being killed in huge numbers and they are even training grouper and sharks to hunt and eat them.

What size tank? Also can you do like a tank setup kind of video. I really wanna get one later
@koaleighhomestead26063 жыл бұрын
The volitan lionfish will grow up to 18 inches so it's recommended you keep it in a 125 gallon tank or bigger. I'm currently in the process of moving all my aquariums to a different section of the house to a room that's a dedicated fish room and will be setting up a 125 gallon tank for a new volitan lionfish. There will be videos at a later date of the new volitan tank setup.

Was it hard to train him to eat pre-pared foods? I get my fuzzy dwarf tomorrow. I already have a variety of foods.
@koaleighhomestead26062 жыл бұрын
We had gotten a fuzzy a few months later after this Volitan and we found him easy to train to eat frozen food, we started him on live ghost shrimp and after about 2 weeks he was looking at us expecting to be fed when we came to the aquarium. Next we progressed into frozen krill, he took to that almost straight away as it looks much like the ghost shrimp. Once he was used to eating krill we progressed him on chopped up frozen silverside, raw frozen shrimp that we got from the supermarket, and Hikari Carnivore pellets. Always try to get your fish off krill as early as possible and on to the other options, krill is good for training but can cause lock jaw if your fish eats only krill for a long time. Hope this information helps, I do have newer videos on our dwarf lionfish if you’d like to learn more.

@@koaleighhomestead2606 Awesome, thanks! Appreciate the helpful advice and will definitely check out the video. Do you QT them or no? I've heard they do not tolerate the 2.5ppm of copper power well just like wrasse and puffers

@@DesertRider760 I quarantined but never used copper, just observed them to make sure they were healthy and eating properly.

I just got my lion fish he refuses to eat frozen food only likes live food. How do I get him off live food? Greeat video

Your lionfish is a wild animal that came from the ocean, ended up in a store, then found a home in your aquarium, it needs to learn that you are where it’s food comes from now and that it’s not hunting in the wild still. Only feed it 3 days a week, they don’t swim around much so have a slower metabolism than other fish that swim around a lot quickly, so 3 days a week is more than enough. Make sure it sees you giving it the live shrimp ( I assume that’s what you are feeding it ), ideally turn off the water flow first, this will make it easier to feed without the current affecting the food getting pushed away and he’ll soon relate the stopped flow to feeding time, hold it just under the surface of the water until he sees it before you let it go, only give him one. It won’t take very long before he’ll be expecting food from you. The first frozen food I always started with was thawed frozen krill as they look a lot like small shrimp which they are already familiar with eating, try and give them a whole krill so it looks like a shrimp, get his attention like you were with the shrimp and let it sink down to him, if he’s hungry he’ll most likely take it. Once he is successfully eating krill stop the live food so all he is eating is frozen and he gets used to only eating it. Once he is used to eating krill try and get him eating other food like in this video we are commenting on, once he is eating other food successfully stop the krill, krill is only good for training your fish to start eating frozen food and learn you are it’s food source but can cause health issues if it’s the only food it’s fed long term. They always act like they’re hungry but stick to the 3 days a week feedings. I started by letting the food sink down to him but quickly he learned to take the food from a wooden skewer which I found I had more control of getting the food more directly to him, but it didn’t take too long before he started coming up to the surface to take food from my fingers when offered. Hope this information helps and all the best with your new fish.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/enSQe5-wl6pkh5Y This is my video of the first time I feed my lionfish krill, you’ll see how I get his attention with it first before I let it go. He’s still in the quarantine tank here and if I remember correctly I had only fed him live food for a week before trying krill

I was using a filter like this one but this is my quarantine tank and not my regular tank and I would not recommend using these types of filters with saltwater except for a temporary setup like this, these types of filters cause salt creep from splashing which is unsightly and a nuisance to clean up

what an ugly tank....
@koaleighhomestead26063 жыл бұрын
Yes it is, that's because it's a quarantine tank, and if you don't know what a quarantine tank is then look it up, there's a lot of videos on fish quarantine tanks.
