Hi Jared, another great video, a lot harder than it sounds. My approach to this was always: "Take ANY rudiment that you're practicing, and just stick a kick in between the notes". Great way to build up coordination and foot speed at the same time...

Holy crap this really works! I practice the first exercise for about 20 minutes and reach 200 bmp but I played it in quarter notes. I was struggling on a song with meant for a double bass pedal but can be played on a single pedal. Anyhow, I kept on hitting the crash at the exact same time my foot would hit the bass drum. I played it over once and I did the same thing in the beginning but halfway through the song I noticed I could actually play my right foot independently and not have to worry about my foot flowing my right hand.

I started drumming two years ago. I'm 42 now so that gives you some idea of the difficulty I face. My whole left side has basically been a passenger all my life. Once my mates got sick of every pattern being minor variations of 8th notes with the kick on the 1 and the 'and' of 3, it was time for real practice. I've looked at lots of KZbin drum teachers, but I always come back to Jared. If you do what he says, you'll get there. If it works for me, it should work for anyone. So, thanks Jared.

I’ve never had lessons and started playing as an adult, I have played lots of songs successfully but never actually learned with exercises. I tried this recently and was amazed how difficult I found it initially, but within 45 mins was able to get to 100bpm, I went up in 5bpm increments from 70. This was just the basic one to start with but I think it has helped me as I am now suffering less with my right leg trying to follow my right arm in some patterns! Good exercise thanks 👍

Nice... I have been looking for a video like this because my daughter (who is 4) stared playing about a year and a half ago but she plays open handed. All the videos I have come across on hand foot independence are for crossed handed players. Before this pandemic she was working on her hands foot independence with her teacher but I think your exercises are a lot better.

This has been the thing that has been the most difficult to get to grips with. I am around 4 days now into practicing it now and I have been concentrating on it for most of my practice. I can do the quarter notes into triplets and out again at 70 maybe 80 bpm pretty although it has taken a long time and they are still far from perfect. I am now starting to introduce some hi hat notes and it's very difficult. It is going to take some time to learn this properly. I can't believe just how difficult this simple and straightforward exercise is.

The function of the spring is to provide rebound, i e it adds extra bounce to the kick. If you have it set too loose the kick doesn't flex back quickly enough for the next beat when you go fast. If it doesn't follow your foot snuggly back up again, e g it feels like your foot is losing contact with the pedal on the upstrokes, you've got it set too loose. I'm not sure if there's a definite downside from having it set too tight - so like Jared says: keep it on the tight side.

When you changed to the Triplets, it just sounded the like it was the same thing but a faster tempo. So to me, it made no difference than just playing it faster. I noticed that in a number of songs, (this is highly dependent on phrasing), but 4/4 with Triplets throughout, is no different than modifying the tempo and playing everything noted in 12/8.
@gredangeo
@gredangeo 8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, so? 12/8 and 4/4 seem similar to me. The down beat changes on each foot, sure, but that's it. Writing the whole song in 4/4 and using Triplets the whole way through, defeats the purpose. Easier to notate in 12/8 and be done. I think the same way with 9/8 and 3/4. Assuming the core of the song is still counted in 3's. The difference that happened was, the tempo got adjusted, and now there are 9 eighth's to a bar, with each of the 3 beats being longer.
