The Best Beginner Drum Book ($19):
Drumeo.com/beg...
I'm back with another lesson taken from our brand new book: The Best Beginner Drum Book. Today we're going to talk about limb independence - specifically lead-hand independence.
When you're just starting out on the drums, it's difficult to separate your limbs and have them all do different things at the same time. If you want to start exploring different drum beats and fills, gettings those hands and feet separated from one another is crucial. Simply put... You need to build limb independence to play what you want.
Here are five different drum beats you can practice to help free up your lead hand. Start slow! If you're having trouble, try isolating one or two limbs first, then slowly put everything together.

Russ Gray why you will never become a good drummer, is because you’re impatient and instead of listening to him explain it, you rather just jump straight to the playing.

@@stevencccccc I've been drumming since I was 5. I'm a fine drummer. I pulled up this video for my mother to watch because she wants to learn and I'm a terrible teacher. I think his videos are great for drills; however, since he keeps talking and talking and talking there is about 1 minute or less of actual tutorial. My mother kept losing interest because she would have to keep finding parts that weren't just him talking.

Hi Jared . First of all I want to thank you for all your videos because they have helped me A LOT , being a self-taught drummer , you are the closest I have ever had to a "drums teacher" . So , I wanted to ask you about the cymbals used in this video cause they really sound great . Especially that ride at 8:25 has a really sweet bell sound . Thank you again for your amazing work !

These exercises are GREAT! I'm just starting out and I don't even have a kit set up yet, so I'm just grinding independence on a pad. These were awesome for that. When you started orchestrating it though? THAT was so exciting. Suddenly it wasn't just an independence exercise. It was music

Here's a question from a beginner drummer: Why is it easier to play beat #5 (for example) with my lead hand on the ride cymbal compared to on the hi-hat? Somehow uncrossing my arms helps? Just curious. Thanks for great video content.
@lt.spruilly6452
@lt.spruilly6452 Жыл бұрын
I know this is a late reply, but I've asked this question myself! I feel like it has to do with having one arm crossed over the other that you makes you feel like your hand doesn't have room to breathe. Does that make sense? I even raised my hi hats or would lower my snare a little to help me not feel as cramped
@johannest3628

This is my biggest hurtle right now. I'm having a hard time putting bass notes between my right hand setting the tempo. Especially if my right foot is expected to push like two 16th notes between quarter notes on my right hand or putting 32nd notes between 16th notes. It's also hard to have a baseline that is hitting 16th notes in general while my right hand is going 8th or quarter notes. My hand always wants to speed up with my foot and match speed.
