Why don't you tell the length of the thread you need for the size of necklace you are making, what size of thread you need and how you start and finish. Not much help for me.

@ mary genereux : Other videos from Fire Mountain will help you with all that you mentioned. This video is only for learning the knotting technique. From watching other non-Fire Mountain tutorials, THIS is one of the best in terms of actually seeing and understanding what is being said and done to form a knot. I hope you continue in your quest for the other topics you mentioned - there are tutorials for those, as well. :-)

I have 79 Pearl's that I want to make a necklace with. It is going to cost me $300.00 to have them strung. What type of thread do you use and how do I get them drilled? I can do this myself if I can get them drilled.
@FireMountainGems
@FireMountainGems 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sherri. Traditionally silk thread is used for hand knotting. The diameter of the thread will be determined once the holes are drilled. Obviously you want your thread to be a smaller diameter than the drill hole so the thread can pass through the drill hole. You might contact a local gemologist or jewelry store that can point you in the direction of someone that can drill the holes. Or, here are some resources on drilling them on your own. Freshwater pearls are very soft similar to turquoise: fmg.co/THgAEd and fmg.co/Ahijjw

Hi Alona. This video is about how to hand knot pearls. It's not a start to finish jewelry making video. You might find this video helpful on how to add a clasp to a thread jewelry design: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apuqnmt6qrmkrbc

Is purely silk used here? How do you get the silk on the needle and then it would be 4 times the thread at the last few beads? How do you prevent the silk from stretching over time?
@FireMountainGems

Hello. We're not sure if Sandra was using the brand Purely Silk or Griffin Silk thread. Watch this video to see how you make a silk needle: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5_NcqSol6l2mpI. If you choose to use Purely Silk, this silk needle will help. If you choose to use Griffin Silk, it typically comes with a needle attached. We're not sure what you mean by "then it would be 4 times the thread at the last few beads?". To prevent silk from stretching, run it through a bit of wax several times with a little tension. Wipe off any excess wax off the thread.

Thank you for the reply. What I meant by 4 times the thread is - she is using two lengths of thread combined into a needle so there is two pieces of thread going through the beads. When she gets to the end she would have to go through the last three beads to secure the bracelet. So by going back through the beads it would then be 4 pieces of thread going through the beads. Wouldn't the bead holes have to be huge to do that? I do use thread conditioner but griffin silk still stretches a ton, does beeswax work better for preventing this?

I don't understand why the thread is doubled. Why not just use a thread that's twice as thick? Also it would be much easier to knot the threads without a tweezer.

Two threads make a nicer looking knot rather than single thread :) I don't use tweezers when using two strands
