Honestly this is some of the most useful material for beginner hand lettering on the web right now. This really gives people a great starting point.

wow that is great , you explain and demonstrate so much better than any other tutorials on using a brush .. I am just getting back to calligraphy after 35 years away and brush pens were taught to my generation only for japanese and chinese calligraphy ... thank you I AM A FAN !!!

Ok Stephen, I just have to say that I have watched hundreds of hand lettering tutorials for beginners (that's me for sure) and this one is "without a doubt" the best informative one! You are such a talented young man and your teaching skills are outstanding! For me, getting the consistent angels and spacing in-between each letter is the toughest part, and I know "practice makes perfect". This ole Canadian woman just loves you Stephen and holds you in the highest respect for your talent (and the young Canadians girls would swoon over your accent LOL)! So my dear, I look forward to watching your journey and I do so hate to brag but when I do I'm usually right and I'm saying to you, "you are going places"! Gentle hugz Nancy Lynn

I love how calligraphy seems to be experiencing a real renaissance, especially with the advent of brush pens, and advances in calligraphic dip and cartridge pens and markers. It's a beautiful way to communicate an invitation or short letter, and even becomes a calming activity once your hand becomes practiced enough. If you can remember "heavy downwards, light upwards", you're halfway to pen mastery. :-)

Your video idea is awesome! I'd love to see that video! Some question I have: 1. where do you get your inspiration from? 2. how did you get into hand lettering? 3. what do you enjoy most about doing graphic design? 4. What would be a skill you would like to have? What you are doing for the hand lettering community and especially beginners is honestly super great! I think I'll download the sheet to practice a lot of z's and x's haha, these two are my kryptonite :D

Great video as always! Was just wondering whether you could help me out, I'm applying to study graphic design at Uni soon what sort of work should I have in my portfolio to show to them?
@SteBradburyDesign8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and that's great to hear! As for your portfolio, I would recommend including a couple of good projects, so including the research, sketches, development (preferably in a sketchbook or worksheets all together). These stages of the design process are crucial, so it's important that you can show them that you understand the process of a project. And of course, you can include some final designs by themselves if you like, without any of the research etc. It's just good to have a few examples of you going through the design process because those processes are fundamental :) Hope this helps, and good luck with your university applications :D

Very useful. The only problem I had doing this workout was the pen lenght. Just 3-4 pages of lettering before it die, maybe a cheap one. What is the average life time of your pencils, Ste? thanks, keep up the good work!
@SteBradburyDesign8 жыл бұрын
As I said at the start, these are fabric markers, so the ink is very wet and comes out quicker than most other pens, so they will run out faster. I just personally like them because the nib is easier to control and get sharper points since it's so wet. Im not really sure about the average lifespan of a sharpie fabric marker to be honest. You can use any other brush pen for this tutorial, you don't have to use the one I am using in the video. I would recommend using a Lyra Aqua Duo brush pen as a cheaper alternative, and these are watercolour brush pens, but can also be used without water, and they last quite a long time.

Understand. I'll have to do some experiments. Cheers!

Nice vid as always, Ste! Hey bro, You are doing freelance, right? I wanted to ask you something.. Where did your clients know you form? Well I'm just curious about that because I want to start freelancing too. Thanks!
@SteBradburyDesign8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! and the clients come to me for work, I don't reach out to them. If you reach out to people asking to do work for them, more often than not, they either won't respond, or they will try and take advantage of you because you're coming to them asking for work, not them coming to you, if that makes sense. The best way to get clients is to just put out a lot of good work on social media and create a digital portfolio of your best work on something like Behance, for example. I recently made a lot of my Behance projects private because I looked back at them and the work was really outdated and not so great. The idea is to post whatever you like on social media, but only put your best work on your portfolio :) But yeah, I wouldn't approach a client asking for work because that immediately puts you on the back foot and the client will probably see you as desperate for work and either try to take advantage by asking for very, very cheap work, or simply won't respond. I hope this helps :)
