Gerard, with your help and a little penetrating oil I managed to free off the seized calliper arm and got the handbrake working. Before I attempted the adjustment of the cable tension I decided to contact Mitsubishi and found that the car was still under warranty so I've got it booked in next week. In any case it was your clear instructions that gave me the confidence to give it a go. I managed to get it done with the car on ramps, though a bit awkward. Do you have a donation site? It is well worth a tenner just for the info. If not, consider one. Thanks again

Thanks so much Christopher, It is really nice to hear feedback like that. I have set up a Patreon page but I do not promote it, If you would like to leave something for the help that would be much appreciated. The link is in the description. It would be my first one :)

Great video!!! I heard there is a recall on these type of parking brakes... Because of the seized jackscrew(s) in the caliper(s) , that depress the rear service brake pads into the rotors... The NHTSA recall date is: 01/26/18, and the NHTSA recall # is:18V070.

That is the exact issue I have going on. 2015 model.

@@diybricklaying5568 I feel that the best place for parking brakes, is externally mounted on the output shafts of the transmission... On RWD vehicles, only 1 P/B assy would be needed... On front wheel drive vehicles, a parking brake on each half-shaft would work very well.... Much more simple and effective than the ridiculous over-engineered setups that are currently being used, with frequent failures....

There is now a recall campaign for this problem. It varies by country, but in the UK, it came in roughly September 2018.

Hi, I have a Mitsubishi ASX 2013 model, manufactured in oct. 2014 and I live in Norway. As long as it was in guarantee, on the last 3 months I had a problem with the back caliper. I was at the workshop and they replaced them both for free. But I have a problem now with the handbrake cable on right side. I noticed that Outlander and ASX are almost the same on this matter. My question is: how difficult it is to change the cable ? Should I use a wire when I take out the old one to pull in the new one? I didn't know it's such a big problem with the brakes on a Japanese car ! So, if you or anybody experienced that, please give me a clu . Thanks ! Ps. when I opened that place with the hand brake mechanism it is rust on all welded key points... Disappointing .. .

Is that the only way to tighten the e-brake? I thought there was a screw on the rotor too?

Gerard Burke Why not disassemble completely the old one, clean it and replace it. My 2014 phev has the same problem on both sides. I'm only sprayed some wd40 and after a wile they start moving a bit but they not going back by itself to its original position when released the handbrake. Thinking about to disassemble them completely. Shitty car! Only 3 years old and rusty underneath like 15 years old car. The exhaust system needs to be changed soon, rust everywhere!

@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage well yeah but 500 quid. Well free now as mitsi did a recall, I sent mine to them this morning. If you get another one, those calipers are defective and mitsi are replacing em.

So how did Mitsubishi fix it? The caliper was replaced. The information remains the same regardless of a recall. The caliper failed and can't be cleaned up to last for a sustained period. I informed this customer of the recall as soon as I found out (weeks later) and he contacted Mitsubishi regarding the issue. I did the best I could for the customer to solve his issue asap with all the information I had at time of filming, if I ever know of a recall I advise customers to visit the dealer for (TSB) recalls.

@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage i just came looking for a fix for it, however the design is defective on em, i first commented before i learned about the recall. there is no fix for em, just replace and be done with it... hence my somewhat cheeky comment regarding any sort of "fix". you can fix the car but theres no "fix" for these calipers
