I work in restoration. Just imagine that handheld device, how it would work when scanning above the vaults of a cathedral, picking up all the details of the roof and the masonry below it. I just saw a video about how they're tackling the restoration of Notre Dame based on such data. A few years ago on a forum a gentleman explained proudly how they set up a scanner from a few hundred metres away to scan a 14th century gable. It was all very cumbersome, low resolution and completely outdated compared to this. Nowadays your guys would just fly the drone and have 100 times the resolution or even a lot more. Fascinating, even though as a craftsman I'm very much against the thinking pattern that computers are the solution to every problem.

Well said. Facinating as it is I don't see how in any way this beats a tape measure when the site is a collection of very simple buildings.

It would be nice if the system could build a 3D model of the farm . . . before and after views . . . What you are aiming for in a few years time!

Try using both laser scanners in room with mirrors. Polished (silver/gold) and glass objects and placed or dangling prisms? Will software knitting schitz out?

Amazing tech, love it! If it’s not too intrusive could you give an overview of how you finance an endeavour like this one? Cheers 👍
@TheRestorationCouple2 жыл бұрын
So far it’s all just from the work we put in to our house and the equity we built up in it. No doubt finance will be needed at build stage though. I’m sure we will cover it all in a future video.

@@TheRestorationCouple absolutely brilliant Tim & Jo, genuinely very well deserved. My curiosity was peaked due to you buying the farm before selling the house though!

Equipment used? Stationary and handheld scanner + software?

It was all Leica kit and software. 👍

Remarkable.

I used to work with Leica equipment. The tripod scanner in Tim's previous video is called an RTC scanner. The hand held devise is called a BLK2GO ( I think) and the data is all proceeded and analysed in software called Cyclone. It's been a couple of years since I have used it so the names may changed slightly.

Amazing bit of kit. Struggling to work out how each separate scan he does will ultimately piece together given that civilian grade GPS isn’t particularly accurate
@christophertierney66002 жыл бұрын
Surveying using Gps can be accurate to a couple of mm. You just need to analyse the position data collected over a longer period of time. The. The scans gets referenced relative to those known points. It is a fun process
@TheRestorationCouple2 жыл бұрын
I believe the scan is all visually knitted together by the way each scan overlaps to actually create the 3D model. This can then be fine tuned in software.

@@TheRestorationCouple I would suspect it’s just (!) a much more complicated 3-D version of the algorithms that stitch together photographs to create a panorama.
@johncooper86042 жыл бұрын
It's collecting thousands of known points using lidar, when you move position you scan part of the previously scanned area so the two scans stitch together.
@stevenbennett39222 жыл бұрын
That was amazing. You have got to like technology. Not wishing to appear rude but I will ask the question. Ball park figures for the cost of a scan like this. Appreciate as you said what would it have cost in time and resource previously to do this. Really looking forward to where you can use other forms of new tech during the whole build process. I used to watch a programme from the US years ago 'Tool Time' where a lot of tech and cutting edge stuff was used in the build or re-modelling of a house.

Ours was a bit complex plus we did some extra bits around all the buildings but Duncan said he usually would charge £800-1200 for domestic type site/dwelling. Guess it all depends on how complex it is and how many scans needed to cover the site. I.e empty barn v 30 room house.

@@TheRestorationCouple that's pretty reasonable! I was quoted more in the 2k range for a 300sqm house.

Tim this is a plea from one of your early followers. When are you going to stop teasing us and give an explanation of what is going on down on the farm??? This is beginning to get about as bad as when Bobby Ewing got shot in the swimming pool, is there any truth in the rumour you have bought a Lamborghini tractor and are about to open a resturant down there??? I think you should come clean to your loyal viewers or these silly rumours will abound!
@dannymurphy17792 жыл бұрын
Is anyone getting a feeling of 'Emporer's new clothes' on this??? On the site all you have is a bunch of single storey empty shells of buildings, pay a Surveyor £300 and take a bunch of photos and bob's your uncle you've saved thousands. And you could probably save the £300 by looking on the planning protal or verifying the sales particulars. OK I accept this was an 'infomercial' - but why would anyone want this??? I understand if you were restoring Hampton Court Palace this would be jolly useful but if all you have is a bunch of empty shells then what's the point??? If you want a 3D model why not use some cardboard and a scale ruler in the tried and trusted way??? Sorry but this is a form of data madness, Tim I think you have 'lost it' and been blinded by science!!!
