This video makes all the difference; thank you! This is my first time with a 3D scanner, and I was thinking you were supposed to try to get everything in one or two gos of the same view. The explanation of doing different scan projects and aligning the results to make a final output is eminently helpful!

Finally some real-world use cases for this thing! I actually discovered your channel yesterday while searching for any decent review of the EinStar; what a fortuitous coincidence. Seems no one else wanted to commit the time to a proper full-detail scan so I can see what the unit is actually capable of if you're not just playing. Very much looking forward to the shootout vid. dont want to toot my own horn or simp too much, but i have been using a professional grade scanner for years and.... this is the first video i have ever seem where someone TRULY goes into the details of what it is like to 3D scan something, warts and all. I bet a lot of people would criticise this unit for how un-slick it seems compared to other devices, but a lot of the time those devices are not telling the truth about the process. the device seems capable, and so does the software. 10/10 review and overview.

I just swapped my CR Scan 01 for the Einstar and am absolutely loving it. It's so much faster than the creality scanners. I feel like the package is much nicer too. Cabling seems better with one connecting to the unit with a locking feature, I really like the silicone case, the whole thing feels much more "premium" than creality.

So, I broke down and bought one of these; abandoning the XBox concept. Yeah; It's badass. going to be using it to scan my kid's VW MK2 GTI, along with a rear wheel arch (non-rotten) from the wrecking yard so that I can properly jig/place the replacement fuel-filler-neck-bracket back into his car. Now I'm scanning absolutely EVERY car part I have and this is fully part of my workflow now.

Final thoughts for Einstar. They need a macro mode or some such for close up shots of details. Would also be nice if they put the buttons on the side of the scanner so it's already where your hand wants to grip. Pushing on the back seems a bit awkward. Still looks like a great product overall.

Definitely waiting on the comparison. I have a pop 2 that I've had reasonable success with. Trying to scan large parts is a tiring process though. Also having to cover everything in chalk spray isn't ideal. Looks like the Revo might be the go for small mechanical parts and the einscan is be best for scanning larger parts like the engine bay and body panels. I've got a decent workshop with lathe, mill, mig, tig and 3d printer etc and still find it's often best to just cardboard template or make crude jigs for most large parts. Sadly it seems that often the traditional boring way of measuring and making parts is far more efficient than trying to digitise absolutely everything.
@MakingforMotorsport

Great review, very nice to see a real world part being scanned. I have an Einscan-SP and I love the software. It look a bit childish with big buttons and guiding you through the process a lot but it does a great job and it is truly a professional piece of software that is very easy to use. I don't need a larger format scanner today but I still remember how I was struggling with my first customer scan when my first scanner arrived. It seems like a good idea to buy one to be prepared for what is coming 😁 On of things I want to use this for is to scan bicycle frames that we make. The quality of the scans is (should be) good enough to validate if the frame is within spec but mainly to store a 3D model of each frame built for future reference (especially in case of a warranty issue when it is out of alignment). Regarding the system requirements: The order of video card, system RAM and CPU is indeed the order in which they need to be selected. Both the processor and the RAM on the video card are used for analyzing scan data and producing the point cloud (viewing and rotating the point cloud is just a small percentage of the power used). If your video card is too slow, the scanner will keep loosing alignment when moving around. Do go for at least 32 GB of system RAM, not less. Even though the system may run with 16 GB, you will hit memory limits when scanning larger models. Finally, the CPU needs to be able to move all that data around but this is more of a bottleneck during post processing than during scanning. I would not recommend any laptops for scanning, even if they do have a good video card, fast CPU and lots of memory. The problem with a laptop is cooling; as soon as you are post processing, the CPU load is heating up the processor and since a laptop is not that good at getting the heat out, the CPU is being throttled down.

@@MakingforMotorsport I got mine yesterday and did some test scans. I tried to look at the performance of the system while scanning but that is almost impossible. I should actually make a video of the scanning process to record what is happening with CPU, GPU and memory while scanning and meshing. I do have a fairly fast system (AMD Ryzen7 5800x @ 3800 MHz, 64 GB, GTX1060 with 6 GB and a Samsung 980 Pro SSD but there are some moments where I was wondering if it was still working ... I'd say that those small form factor PCs are more or less designed for office/desktop application and they will throttle down when more power is used (and thus more heat) to prevent overheating.

I returned my Einstar after a week of testing and got a Einscan SP instead. It could not really scan a PS4 controller for example. Small object mode didn’t work at all too. For big parts or a scan car parts it’s a good scanner. Accuracy around 0.3mm.
@Todestelzer
@Todestelzer Жыл бұрын
@Manuel De Escayola I used Aesub and other 3D scanning sprays. I used a sheet of wood with scanner markers as well. I think the Einstar is a good scanner for bigger parts. But I needed more accuracy and fine detailed scans. The Einscan SP is much better for the stuff I have to scan. Like a Asher of a Audi A6, modifying it to have USB charging ports. (That was actually quite hard to make… scanned with Revopoint mini back than) Or a replacement part for a coffee machine. Broken stand on the water storage container.

Love the video, sir. I've got one coming in towards the middle of the week and was getting pretty worried about my laptop. I saw your comparison video between the 4 scanners first and you'd pointed out that you really needed a stronger machine for this scanner over the others and when I looked up the specs and saw that 11th gen chip in the recommended specs I was despairing about my laptop. It's not new, but I hadn't even though about the laptop. Now that I've seen the specs that your desktop has, I'm feeling a bit better. This looks really high-end for the money. The downside being you do need a powerful rig. One thing if I've got a car in a garage and I can drag a full-blown gaming rig out from the game room down into the shop. Another thing when you want to scan an aircraft at a museum, or a bumper in someone else's garage a far ways off. That calls for having a top of the line gaming laptop or a specially-built ITX-type portable computer that could fit a carry-on bag. Plus power sources and the like which aren't always handy. So that's one place where that performance is a double-edged sword.

I got a revopoint pop 1 last year, and had nothing but frustration with it....litterally hours of frustration from losing tracking and not picking up where it left off to a total lack of being able to align models. It has remained in the box since as a result and I basically see it as a bad waste of money. Every time you would reach a point where I had difficulty with the pop, and the ease of which this scanner had no difficulty doing what would have been impossible with the pop, I remarked to myself that this is the scanner to own. The biggest plus with this is the quality and ease with the processing software. Light years ahead of the pop! Your point about accuracy and specs taking a backseat to ease of use and especally with the software is spot on. Great review and particually because I'm a car guy and the uses you are using it for are precisely what I will be using it for, so that gave extra value to your video. Great Work!

Thanks for your review! I'm doing professional 3D-Scans via photogrammetry for over 7 Years now and was interested to see how far those mid-priced hand scanners have come. I'm still dissapointed how low the quality and resolution of those scanner are, compared to a scan using almost any reccent phone camera for photogrammetry. However I like how well it handles shiny surfaces. If you can't use matting spray for photogrammetry, then the Einstar is a clear winner.
@Rob_65
@Rob_65 Жыл бұрын
I have not tested this (yet) but AESUB has some nice matting sprays: white (permanent, need to wash off), blue (working time 1-2 hrs) and orange (working time 4-8 hrs) all have a white finish. transparent has a matte transparent finish. All apart from the white do sublimate so you do not have to clean the part afterwards but I still would not use this on a kid's toy without thorough cleaning afterwards (or even use it at all on those toys, I rather use something like face matting powder/foundation which are food safe) They do cost a bit though; white is around € 15 and blue/orange around € 35

@@MakingforMotorsport I've scanned a whole car in 2-3 Hours with photogrammetry. You definetly need AESUB orange (not blue, that doesn't last long enough). I think the hardest part is keeping all the positions that you've photographed in mind, because there is (normally) no direct feedback of what you've scanned. Reality Capture is good, but I'm using Metashape (Pro), I found it has more options for tuning especially for misaligned pictures and also runs natively on M1 Macs (my M1 max has 70% of the processing speed as my Workstation (Ryzen 3950x, Vega 7 + Vega 64, 64 GB DDR4 RAM) but using 5 Times less energy. You can use a 30-Day trial of Metashape for testing purposes.
@lesca3d
@lesca3d Жыл бұрын
@@Rob_65 I've found, that AESUB Orange gives a finer powder than Blue, therefore beeing a bit more accurate if you need < 0,1 mm precision. Also don't use the Blue one in +25°C environment (and more than 50 cm distance), because a part of if vanishes in mid air. You can speed up the sublimation with heating up the part and putting some fan next to it. Even strong LED lights can speed up the process, which is something that I keep in mind for AESUB blue, becaus somethimes it dissipates too fast. Objects wich are blocking airflow inside (like a drinking glass) can keep the matting spray inside for DAYS (even the Blue one)!

I just received a response from Einstar, as follows: "einstar: Thank you for your message and for your kind words of support! We truly appreciate your enthusiasm for our products. You're correct-our software currently leverages NVIDIA's CUDA technology, which means it requires an NVIDIA GPU for optimal performance. We understand that this can be an unexpected hurdle, especially after all the research you've done. If you decide to explore other options in the meantime, we completely understand. Looks like a quality company, that are world leaders in 3D scanning technology. The full car scans look full-on! Im keen to see accuracy comparisons between the different scanners. Pixologic ZBrush is a king amongst point-cloud re-meshing. I use it to clean up CT and MRI data sets...oh and photogrammetry. It has great tools to clean up the polygon soup, to create beautiful edge loop and perfect bolt holes. Best software I have ever purchased and Ive been a "3D modeler" for 23yrs. Zbrush is a 2.5D software, so GPU power is irrelevant. Its the RAM and CPU that are crucial...and lots of it. I just know Ill be watching this again. Take My Money!!!......HAHAHAH

I got the Scan Lizard and it’s been incredible after some initial frustrations with the software which was due to the poor terminology/English translation. Big advantage of the Einscan is that it knows object position so scans will be correctly oriented when you bring it into Meshmixer, fusion etc. you can do that with scans with the Creality but they won’t be as accurately positioned as something done with Einscan.

This review was great. Thank you. I bought my Einstar 3D a month ago. Since I am new to 3D scanning, the learning curve was steep and Shining 3D tech support is atrocious. I sent a request 2+ weeks ago and never received a response. Perhaps you can help: I am unable to resolve sharp edges as is the case with a cube. The surfaces are fine. Is this a limitation of this type of scanner?
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport Жыл бұрын
So, you’ll find that the scanner works best at right angles to the surface and on a sharp corner there is very little surface to see. Structured light (and blue light) scanners do better at this stuff but it shouldn’t matter, once the Einstar scan is processed it should resolve those corners. If you keep struggling make sure you 1. The part is properly dull (scanning spray) and 2. When at a corner pull back on the scanner as a corner will be closer to the scanner than the surrounding faces…

Great work! I recently (as in still returnable) picked up the Revopoint POP2 for scanning car parts. It's seemed to be the best bang for the buck, at the time. Until your video made me rethink my choice. The first thing I noticed about the POP 2 was the that it wanted an ideal distance, which was pretty close, between it and the item being scanned. Considering that I'll be scanning sizable automotive elements, from uprights to unibody frame sections, would you recommend the Einstar? Now the challenge is that I have this wicked MacBook M1 Pro with 32GB of RAM and 19 GPUs, which the Einstar doesn't seem to support. Ug. 🤦🏼 Looking forward to the next video with product comparisons.
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport Жыл бұрын
Hi there… the comparison should be out next week… but I’ll let you have a sneak peak… For the things you mentioned, yes the Einstar is the best of scanners I’ve used and in user experience general is different league compared to anything else I have tried. The downside of the Einstar is the small objects, (down to 4 or 5 inches), it works but then the CR-Lizard and Pop2 take over. And the MacBook well… lovely piece of kit but the world of Engineering runs on Windows (plus the Einstar really wants an NVIDIA GPU)…😬🤷‍♂️

@@MakingforMotorsport Thanks, mate! Good to know. I have a mate with a few NVIDIA RTX 3090's from an old miner. I think he mite spare one for a pint or two. In your next set of tests, maybe you can try scanning a firearm, something dark or black in color and discuss the reasons and possible work-a rounds for the difficulties of the current scanners to scan dark colored objects. Without spraying a clients precious firearm with dry shampoo or other semi permanent marking technique I can only wait for the technology to catch up to this inconvenience. Maybe also discuss what would make future scanning devices better. For example, Ultra Violet, Infra red AND Sonic all in the same device. Keep up the great videos, and thank you!
