I put new bars, grips and handguards on my 300 today and it turned out great. I drilled the bars and dremeled the throttle tube as you demonstrate here. I didn't have to remove the throttle cables because I worked on the throttle tube on the bike. I slid the old handlebars off the throttle tube and slid the new ones on without detaching the cables.

I have changed bars a few times on different bikes, and never used that “tape indent” technique to find the location to drill the bars. Much better than trial and error it seems. Thanks for the tips!

another way to put grips on is alcohol . pour yourself a glass of strong spirits ( my weapon of choice is whisky ) , after you got some fire in ya put some rubbing alcohol or aftershave or vodka onto the bar and slide the grip on . in a few seconds the alcohol will evaporate leaving your grips stuck
@cyclerider56522 жыл бұрын
I tried rubbing alcohol and it worked great. I couldn't get the grips on with an air hose like Jake. I used to use WD40 (it actually evaporates and holds the grips in place fairly well) but wanted to try something else this time. Thanks for the tip.

I always just saw the tab off the control housings and use double sided tape underneath to keep them in place. I personally don't want to drill holes to aluminium bars and compromise the strength of them just to mount buttons. Controls stay in place very easily if you just have something suitable under them during install and it is also easier to change their position if you want to turn your handlebar a bit to one side or another later.

Many people who have gone this route have had to purchase new controls due to the fact that they no longer stay in place.

I have a '21 Z900 i got at the end of June. A month ago I pulled it out of the garage and parked it so I could close the garage door. As I walked away from the bike i heard a clunk. It rolled forward a little bit on the kickstand and fell on the left side. Bent my bars. :-/ I wanted to go aftermarket but couldn't find a set that would match the bend/shape of the stock ones so went with another OEM set. Hopefully it doesn't fall over again.

It’s much better to drill the tiny holes for the controls and have it not move as opposed to grinding the nubs. I found out the hard way. (Like always) Some JB weld or solder will make me some new nubs. (Doh!) It’s pretty straight forward to find the correct spot to drill so the controls line up. The goon guards will add a tad of friction to the throttle tube making drilling the hole more important so the throttle doesn’t move at all when WFO. I’m not a goon so I put Tusk bar ends on instead. Using the old clamps as a drill guide is a good idea since I always switch my bars to 1 1/8 fat tapered with no cross bar. (To combat arm pump) Otherwise I’d toss the old clamps over my shoulder because I’ll never use them again. Same with the stock bars. Tusk has the universal oversized clamp & bar kits for around $70 bucks. I went with the KTM bend because they were similar to the Pro Taper Carmichael bend (0.6” taller) and I’m a inch or two taller than RC. If KTM has a problem with that then do something! (Faint a punch) That’s what I thought you tea drinking pompous euros will do nothing but get slapped. (Flinch!) You goofy orange oompa loompa MFers! Now get me an espresso and scrumpettes!

I made a a video installing the CR mid Bend bars on my CRF250L and I love them🙌. I did have to drill for the controls, but it is so so easy to do [it was my first time drilling a set of bars]. My preference is the 1 1/8" jumbo bars, but these look great!!💪💪

Got the CR mid bend for my 300l rally too! I flattened the tabs on my controls and kind of regret it, but I'll try to get some double sided tape/electrical tape under there to get them to stop moving lmao
@ConnorGMedia3 жыл бұрын
@@ffengtastic5002 Ngl i considered doing that at first, but given how much I dump my bike I figured I should just do it the right way the first time. That way my controls have less of a chance of getting all spun around😂😂

next time try using the strongest hair spray you can find for your grips. makes them really easy to slide on, let it dry over night, wont move unless you want to remove them, no residues. quickest and easiest method. been doing it for years. no safety wiring neccessary

Great video and tips. I got a little too eager with the drill bit size and the hole is too large on the throttle side and the controls have rotation wiggle room. I've tried electrical tape and strong double sided tape to reduce the wiggle, but it is still there...any tips besides buying new bars. 100% my fault but not too keen on this dowel/hole setup.

@vossenzwe7637 Жыл бұрын
Wish I'd seen this guide before some self-appointed experts suggested that you'd just grind down the controller nubs and try securing it with electrical tape. Worked like shit and gives you two ruined controllers as the medal tabs aren't available as spare part :)

a good trick to put the new grips is to use spray deodorant if you dont have a compressor. the deodorant serves as lube to push the grip and when it dries, it became almost as good as glue.

SM conversation is very soon. Next video is the new hand guards set up. Such a good set up cuz it’s got turn signals, running lights, mirrors, and can’t twist. That vids on patreon already. I got the CR Highs (protaper) for my Rally (not here yet) and I don't know how much higher those bars alone will be over stock. Just wondering if I should throw a set of risers in as well. I'm 6ft. Any thoughts?
@TheGardenSnake3 жыл бұрын
I'm 6 foot and I think it's about right with the CR High. I could pop in some small risers if I want. Seems to be enough slack in the cables and wires. I'll wait till I've done a ride to decide.
@ffengtastic50023 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'2" and the CR mid bend works for me, I like having a small bend in my knees when I'm standing. The built in "riser" of the 7/8 to 1 1/8 conversion + the new bar is enough for me. I didn't want to deal with rerouting the cables with a CR high. Heard some people had issues with the CR high + rally

I've honestly never glued or safety wired grips and they only loosen up when they need replaced anyway lol. If you watch the pros they don't hold on to the bike a lot with their hands. Look at James Stewart doing a tail whip and he has like two fingers on the bike. Not saying I'm at that level but you should try to grip the bike more with your legs/knees. It gives you better control of the bike too.
