An old timer I cut wood with told me you should aim to have your wood split and stacked by Easter to start burning in Sep. It’s easy to remember the date and allows lots of time for that dry summer wind to do its work.

we use to wait until Dec-Jan when snow was at least a foot deep and about 20 below to go get wood. it was easier to get around without tripping over all the brush and twigs, and less chance of dulling your chain by touching the ground.. And no mosquitos, wasps or horseflies either. Another way to do it is to cut it in the rainyseason, split it, and dry it around a hot stove with a fan blowing on it but both of these ways are procrastination.

You nailed it man, its hard to watch people miss handle firewood. I didn't want to deal with pallets and tarping the top after having to make sure its not going to fall over. I built a 12x16' woodshed (12' sides have the walls). I constructed the floor on 25 cinder blocks and framed it up like a massive pallet that allows a lot of airflow underneath. There is a simple shed roof with open soffits for airflow. There is a center divider wall constructed out of pallets so I can have one years worth of wood per side. Each row I stack from wall to center divide and leave a little more space than you have, it depends. I stack it 6' in the rear (slightly below wall height) and about 8' at the front. I've had this for nearly 3 years and the wood is nice and seasoned. I'm also the local firewood nut lol.

Hello me again. My grandpa use to split the 15 cords of wood for heating at -20 to 40 below, no it wasn't fun lol. He threw it bark side out into what I'll call a muskrat house. This ran rain off and kept wood dry. Then guess who got to re-stack it into rows in the fall just before snow. I hated the extra work, I was a kid of course, so I asked why. He said so it is easier to dig out of snow in winter. Did I mention I hated winter!!

I built my woodshed facing south in the windiest part of the property. A few months later it's cracked and drying well from the wind and sun. I DO tarp the sides in December, but set the tarps to still allow airflow. :)

BigBadBuckin'!!!!!!! I was off KZbin for the last month or so! I missed the heck outa'ya!!!! This video was a perfect welcome back for me, as your great attitude was in peak form!! I'm in the same boat - when I see a tarp, I CRINGE!!! To add, if I may, to your point, rainwater will QUICKEN the curing of most woodshed-worthy types of firewood!!!!! There are a few "scientific" reasons for this, but I don't have time to get into organic chemistry, and the binding of resins, dilution of acids, or the biomechanical effect that multiple wetting and drying cycles will have on the fibers of given species....

leave enough room for a cat to get in between.I built a beautiful covered woodshed, stacked w/ perfectly split oak...the wood rats moved in BIG time. I had to take it all down and clean out rat shit etc.I trapped 50 rats out of there in 30 days.anyhow I restacked it, single row, the rats don't feel secure enough to nest there anymore...no more rats.

Getting your stacks off the ground helps out tremendously I've made racks from 2x4 screwed together like rail road tracks with the 2x on edge. And a 8" blocks made from Block split rounds at 3' inrtvals under that ... 16' long stacks so like buckins half a cord per stack or "row"
