Today we handle rust problems with the rear frame and rear differential/axle because it is getting out of hand on my 2002 (3rd generation) Toyota 4runner. I plan on coming back in the future for a more permanent fix, but right now, the wire brushing/knocking the loose stuff off, Rust Kutter, Rust Reformer, and Cosmoline RP-342 will do a good job for protection for at least a few years.
Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoy and learn something new!

Keep it up! When you get the space and time for doing the final rust removal, I recommend taking the body off the frame. I've done it twice now without a lift outside. It also makes it easier to service the engine and suspension. Scary at first, but it's easier than people think. You should have a backup vehicle because you will want to spend more time getting to every component.

i would love to see what a good home made sand blaster would do on this under belly.

Only tough thing with that is you'd likely want to strip most lines that have fluids and some other components, so it may be worth just disassembling the axle and pulling it out to then sand blast it, but I do like the idea of a homemade one!

I had someone sandblast the underneath and then painted over all the frame with black paint, I plan on doing this every 2 years or so.

If you don't mind me asking, how much does that cost? I was going to attempt DIY sandblasting but didn't have the means for it. It seems like the best way to get rid of rust by far.

@@mattuccibuilt3970 well, I looked LONG and HARD. So I got it done for $450 all in from a guy locally. haha but the going rate I was coming into was about $1000-1500 on average.

@@mattuccibuilt3970 it's honestly still worth the work an labor for someone to do a good job for 1k-1500. I know it's alot. But worth saving up and getting it done. I can't tell you the weight off my shoulders it was to have it done. Like gawd

Believe it or not. this is in great shape for a 3rd gen that has lived its life in Utah. The salty roads absolutely wreck the underside of these.

Bad job. You left a lot of scaling rust. That is all still rust. You failed to remove all of it. Covering it up with chemicals, wax and paint won't stop it, it will still rust underneath all of it, You said it yourself. You should have done it right the first time, if not, just use fluid film/surface shield so you can power wash it off later to properly treat it.
