when a company invests its time to simulate a severe weather to demonstrate how to properly use its products and spends time educating its customers to improve its products' capacity, you know it's a trustworthy company. i own Hilleberg's soulo, tarp10, and bivanorak, and all of them are probably the most worthy investments i've made in outdoor gears. great great great

What an outstanding masterclass of a tutorial this is, one which packs so much excellent advice into this short video. In such conditions one's tent becomes a lifesaver, a necessary sanctuary from the elements. Having a sufficiently good tent and the familiarity of experience with it is going to pay dividends in such weather. The tips, suggestions and knowledge gained from this video are unequalled. Thank you.

Was mountaineering in the North Cascades and had a Hilleberg 3 person tent. We camped out on a glacier 7500 ft up. Pretty bad storm rolled in within an hour. Built snow walls and hunkered down for a full day. The winds were howling and the wind chill was 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The hilleberg did it's job 10 times over.

I like to have multiple kinds of ground pegs that will work in a variety of conditions. The ones shown are a decent general purpose type, but there are larger size versions which will hold better if soil allows their use. I also have the steel spike style with a plastic cord holder at the top if the ground has too many rocks or even if the soil is frozen. The only kind i dont yet have is sand anchors. My method may not work well for backpackers considering the extra volume and weight, but for everyone else its nice to have choices. Cool tent!

I use delta ground anchors on my soulo and my nammatj 3GT. Only the guy lines. If they’re in properly the earth will vanish before the pegs. Available on eBay and probably other sites. 👍 frozen ground? Get a rock and bang them in. Flexible hard wearing plastic pegs won’t break.

An example of Swedish thoroughness and practicality here. The tent does look like a bit of a faff to put up. My MLD Duomid pyramid tent weighs 635, needs four pegs and a centre hiking pole to erect but it can be pegged down quickly with another 13 pegs. Will it stand up to Hilleberg winds? Well, it hasn't blown away yet.

Do you know if there is a tent (solo or duo) that would resist winds >150km/h ? Even 200 km/h ? or let's say what is the strongest wind (and tent) that resisted ? And yes, wind would be changing direction all 5 or 10 minutes. So multiple directions.
@HillebergTentmaker
@HillebergTentmaker 8 жыл бұрын
Hello +Louis-Philippe LONCKE. We purposely do not give any wind speed ratings for the tents. When you get a number indicating wind speed strength the tests are usually done by bolting the tent down in the floor and then turning the wind machine on and measuring the wind speed. It is not a very good way of measuring what really happens when you are actually using the tent outdoors since the wind can turn and also one of the first things that can happen in severe weather is that the pegs come out - or even worse that the tent cant be set up. The average working speed that we use is around 112 km/h but that is not necessarily the max speed - again, we do not give one specific number for it. For extreme wind we would recommend using a black label tunnel tent with extra guy lines and doubling the poles. Hope that helps!

I am considering the nammatj 2 for solo trips, but one of the main attributes i want from a tent i strength against wind. I like the fact that this tent has a bigger vestibule than soulo but im not sure about the strength. How would this tent fair against other black labels? Which tents are the strongest against wind and is the nammatj 2 far behind?

hie, i do hesitate to buy one of your tent, last year i camp in the french alpe and the wind was so strong it bended some of my pole at a 90 angle, the only tearing i got was for the inner tent because it streach it too much. i read one of your comment that you don't give specific number for your wind resistance, the wind i had was probably around 90 km/h, it seem you test your tent around 120km/h so i should be fine right ? does the KERON GT and the saitaris have the same resistance for wind ? my old tent was a tunnel so i don't trust that design to hold on well

Is it really recommended to have the vestibule towards the wind? Feels wrong and risky when you want to open the tent.
@petergilbert72
@petergilbert72 6 ай бұрын
Yes, that’s Hilleberg’s advice for very strong winds. The vestibule ‘soaks up’ some of the wind and prevents outer and inner from touching. However, access is more difficult - crawling, then securing the door zippers with the red lock zip lock afterwards. Tom Heaney Adventures channel discusses this with his Jannu in extreme wind.

I can't understand why you shoot a video with a test of the tent's stability from the wind, you don't shoot how it looks inside during a strong wind. So on the video I can't see if there is a floor inside from cloth, or how large the volume of a particular tent is. I think it is not difficult to put several sleeping bags with inflatable mats inside the tent and then tourists would have more information how big this tent inside. If you do a test for wind, then you could do a test for water resistance and show the same video inside tent, because I do not believe that the material that has a mark of 1200, will withstand heavy rain, of course that the snow tent will withstand, but if I buy this tent not only for using only in the winter, but in other times of the year -where is possible water fall :), and the test for breaking the material shows how strong it is, but does not show its water resistance. I will be grateful if you take my suggestions and make correctionsduirng filming the next future videos.
