I have a 6mmARC, I have hzornady 6mmARC brass and starline 6.5 grendel brass that I neck down. Can you neck down 6.5 grendel brass to 22arc? It is easy from grendel to 6mmARC, wondering if it's feasible.

Really enjoyed your video on the 22 arc. Bought a Howa 6mm arc barreled action from Brownells and plastic stock. Still working on load development. If they get around to the 22 ARC bbl'd action or rifles, put in a word for a 1/7 twist bbl. Howa says their hammer forged bbl's will shoot 1moa with good factory. Mine will with 3 rds but not with 5. Looking forward to your next video, Kent Beach

Howa needs to make their Carbon Elevate in 22 ARC that would be an ideal rifle and cartridge combination for me and what I enjoy doing. A rifle that I could take anywhere I might encounter a coyote and it'll only weigh 5 lbs to do so. Accuracy guarantee's are not all they are cracked up to be and perhaps that is something I should address in a video at a later date. I know we just talked about it in the magazines so perhaps now is the time to make that video. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. --Jeremiah

I have run the 22 Grendel for a few years. I have been converting Starline 6.5 Grendel brass and found that after sizing the neck thickness ended up between 15 and 16 thousands. I was having horrible results (wild SD/ES, non-repeating grouping and quite a few crushed cases when seating) until I neck turned them down to 11.5-12 thousands. Have you seen the thick necks after necking down the Lapua brass?
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 5 ай бұрын
Great question, If I had to guess I would say they changed the chamber design to accomidate this with the 22 ARC but you can compare the reamer prints shown at the beginning of the video to your reamer print if you still have access to it. I have not had that issue and at this point I have used both Lapua and Starline 6.5 Grendel Brass. Neck turning is the bane of my existence and I avoid it like the plague, I already have 16 different cartridges I have to neck turn for and that is one of the main reasons I did not want to do it with the 22 Grendel. You may be able to get a finishing reamer and ream yours out to 22 ARC specs and then you wouldn't have to neck turn. My ES and SD numbers are pretty consistent thankfully. The necks on the Laupa cases were thick but again not enough to worry about in my rifle thankfully. My 20 Vartarg on the other hand is a completely different story. It is a Konig Jager Super Bench made out of Aluminum plate (not sure what alloy) and welded together with adjustable legs in a sliding sleeve with a locking pinch type collar on the legs. It is very heavy but great for benchrest type shooting I do wish it was a little bigger. Building one shouldn't be too difficult if your a good welder otherwise I would suggest a different design. Sadly Konig Jager is out of business but you may be able to find some better pictures online of the bench itself. Overall it is a pretty simple design the hardest part would be getting the top which is one piece rolled down to create the approx. 3 inch lip that runs all around the bench so you have something to lean into and attempt to remove your breathing and heartbeat from going into the rifle. If that is a concern I would also suggest a different shape making it easier to get up and lean into the bench but all in all it was one of the best on the market. Thanks for watching! --Jeremiah

@@HandloaderTV Thank you for getting back to me , I have been searching for a bench design I like for quite awhile . When issue #351 was delivered , the first thing I noticed was the bench on the cover . I am wanting to build a portable bench that is also rock solid . I realize that portable AND rock solid might not necessarily be a realistic possibility . During my search I came across the Stukey bench , and It looks absolutely perfect , you can tell a lot of effort went into the design of that base and leg system . Unfortunately with the price of electricity , food , gas and just about everything else doubled and tripled : I would be in big trouble with the powers to be if UPS pulled up and dropped that off on my porch . Besides , I want to build my own anyway . Great job on explanation of case forming the brass and load development for the 22ARC .

Nice video! That looks like a fun cartridge. Great, now I need to add one (or more) to my collection. 🤣 Regarding the pressure limits between an AR platform versus a bolt gun, is the pressure lower in the AR due to barrel dimensions or is it due to excessive gas? If it's due to excessive gas, could a handloader approach bolt gun pressures in an AR if they have an adjustable gas block to throttle down the gas?
@wildnorthadventures
@wildnorthadventures 7 ай бұрын
It’s because of the bolt face used. There is a fear off shearing off the bolt lugs. It was the same with the Grendel. (22 arc is just a necked down Grendel) If you do a search I believe there is 2 companies (can’t remember which ones) that make a beefed up bolt that allow you to run higher pressures.

Wonderful to see folks helping others out @wildnorthadventures is correct on the bolt lugs shearing off, it is possible especially if running at 62K PSI. I believe JP enterprises makes a beefed up bolt that works well, the main issue is bolt thrust from the pressure though as compared to gas, however having an adjustable gas block would in all likelyhood help as well. Great question thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! --Jeremiah

Are the 6.5 Grendel cases you necked down previously fired, or virgin brass? Is it possible to neck down once fired cases? Would annealing help?
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 5 ай бұрын
They were virgin Lapua cases, Annealing would certainly help with necking them down but I would not recommend it for virgin cases I feel it may make them a little too soft and you wouldn't work it enough through sizing to get that hardness back until you've fired it a few times. I could be wrong there though. In my experience once fired cases are even harder and crush even easier than virgin cases. I think the best advice is what is shown in the video using a 6mm ARC or 6mm Grendel die to size the neck down then full length size down to 22 ARC. You'll work your brass less doing so and it'll still shoot well on the first firing. Great question though, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

One question concerning the 62 gr ELD-VT bullets. Because of the very long boattail, when loaded to AR magazine limitations (2.260") they only contact approximately .025" of the very front of the necks of the 22 ARC. Wouldn't that be a concern regarding bullet alignment?

@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 5 ай бұрын
A pure performance standpoint I shot a prairie dog in Wyoming at 645 yards in an 8 MPH wind the ballistics are better and velocity is better resulting in better terminal performance. How much and how much that is worth to you is entirely up to the user. If you shoot a lot and handload a lot it's likely worth it. For me this has completely replaced my 5.56 Coyote rifle. At longer ranges 300 and beyond the difference is noticeable. Great question thank you for asking and taking the time to watch the video! --Jeremiah

I did not get any blown primers with Hornady Black factory ammo and at this point and time I have shot about 100 rounds of it through this rifle. It kinda sounds like it may be a gas issue with your AR I would suggest trying a heavier buffer weight and also check the firing pin protrusion as well. If all else fails an adjustable gas block may be the answer especially if you are running suppressed. The Hornady factory ammo should have staked primer pockets it would take significant amount of force to blow those from the pockets something is not right. I went through the same thing with my 22 Nosler AR-15 and it took some tweaking to get it dialed in but now she runs like a top. Hope you get your issues figured out! --Jeremiah

Those shots aren't flyers. They are part of the group. Your shooting was fine, and your rifle/ammo isn't as accurate as you think it is. If you fired at the same point of aim for 15 more shots(with breaks every 5 shots for the barrel to cool, the group would be likely around 3/4 inch to 1 inch. 5 shots groups are not statistically relevant. 20 shot groups are statistically relevant.
@HandloaderTV

I agree with you which is why we show both group measurements in the video. That particular rifle will put 35 rounds into a little less than an inch depending on conditions which is pretty amazing in my book! However, your absolutely right about 5 shots not being statistically significant and better yet it sounds like you have done your own testing to validate your statement. It's good to hear that other folks are starting to understand such things. No offense taken, we report the results exactly as we get them and the viewer can take that information and do with as they please. We don't pull any punches or show favoritism in our videos nor do we cater to advertisers or anything like that. I am actually working on the part two of the article for Handloader magazine on this rifle and cartridge combination. I shot a 30 Shot group with Vihtavuori N540 that measured out to .88 inches, I wish I could have showed that target and shooting in this video but sadly it was shot after filming was complete. I thought that was pretty good and it can be misleading shooting only five shot groups but everyone has their own thoughts and ideas on that and that is perfectly okay as well. I am pretty happy with it for what it was intended for a 500 yard and in coyote rifle, if I do my part that should be no problem accuracy or ballistics wise. It does outperform the 5.56 NATO I was previously using for coyotes but by all means to each their own. Thank you for being kind with your comment and sharing your thoughts here I think it adds a lot of value to our videos and opens up room for more discussion amongst those who are interested in the video topic. Why would you use a damn bolt gun? The whole purpose of the 22 arc is to have that caliber in an AR platform......sheesh
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 4 күн бұрын
Because the bolt gun allows you to jump from 52,000 PSI to 62,000 PSI and get much greater velocity compared to those in the gas gun and the SAAMI maximum pressure has been set at 52,000 PSI which means that is what they are loading factory ammunition to and if you want peak performance with this cartridge you have to not only handload but you also have to have a bolt gun that is capable of reliably handling that kind of pressure. That is why we opted to use a bolt gun, we were testing the cartridge more than anything, accuracy, velocity and overall performance the best way to do that was with a bolt gun. In the future we may revisit this with an AR-15 and do a seperate load development for that in an AR but we are already working on covering that in the magazines (Rifle magazine and Handloader magazine) as well. I’m not knocking your shooting skills at all, but for a custom rifle it should be shooting much better than that.

Nobody cares that your copying the legendary 22-250 for some bullshit cartridge.

Almost went with a leopold but got the razor lht for my waypoint and only fault is illumination flickers and wind hood dots you really can’t use except maybe in full power. Man that’s a good lookin rifle J..im like you and always lookin to improve on whatever cartridge I’m into basically. Saw some 35gr v max on midway and may try some in my ar as the 40gr I have shoot awsome and fastest I’ve been able to make from a 16”@ 3390-3400fps usin h335..btw is killer powder I now know..also h380 recently tried works good in my .308s as I’m sure you know. Good to see ya ol friend..🫲matt

Thank you very much for the kind words and feedback as always, and sharing your personal experience as well I feel it adds a lot of value to the videos. That sounds like a lot of fun I will admit I am a sucker for speedy cartridges and lightweight bullets. That is very impressive velocity, i'll certainly have to give that a try in my rifle. Thanks for sharing and always good to see you in the comments section! --Jeremiah
