Handmade Silk Paper - How to make it

I have watched so many videos now, I am never sure if this is my own technique as there are so many wonderful artists out there, but I am making silk paper to show you how to do it. You can use it in so many lovely things, like covers for a small journal, cutouts for tags and pockets (I could go on)..

I have been crafting since my children were small, making crystal rings, then using polymer clay to make all kinds of things. Predominantly I am a wet felter but I use all my techniques now in my mixed media work which I hope you enjoy.

I made paper out of old paper scraps waaaaay back in my 20's. It was fun and I ended up painting on all of the ones I made back then. I've been a silk painter for many, many years and I've always wondered if I could tear my silk fabric into small pieces and make a kind of silk paper! You've answered that question for me, lol! Wow this is a really neat effect! I think I'll give it a try. Have you ever tried using wool roving (I think that's what it's called)?

yes, you can make it with wool roving, you just have to lay it out really thin, but you don't get the lovely sheen from the silk then. You could lay the bottom layer with wool and put silk and oddments on the top to get the same effect a little cheaper. glad you liked it, working on more

Combed wool top would be easier to work with… and if you use more animal fibers than silk or non-animal fibers, you could get them to felt together if you want, so that the felted fabric can survive some light washing.

What type of netting do you use? Can it be a fabric netting like tule?

Absolutely it can be netting but not tulle, as this disintegrates. I use the mosquito netting which comes in sheets for putting over your windows. Hope that helps

What type of silk fibres are you using is it Mulberry or tussah or can you use a ant fibre like rose or tencel

In this video I was using tussah silk - I have used rose fibre and viscose but never tried tencel - you could card all the fibres together and then use them, or just try it and see what happens. You could also try using a base of tussah or mulberry and then putting the other fibres on top.

What is the “ medium”? Did I overlook an ingredient list?

You can use fabric medium watered down or gel medium. I mention all ingredients in the other video
