Hands Free Equalization (daily exercises): 1. Lifting and dropping throat with tongue in neutral position. (Do this for 2 minutes. Mouth is closed). 2. Lifting and dropping throat with tongue stuck out. (Do this for 2 minutes). 3. Lifting and dropping throat with tongue folded back. (Do this for 2 minutes). 4. Press soft palate up into the position that opens the eustasian tubes. Hold for 5 seconds, relax for 5 seconds, repeat. (Do this for 2 minutes). 5. Kabilabati, to increase blood flow to the head. (Do this for 5 minutes = 30 of breathing: 30 seconds of relaxation). 6. Hum the letter 'A'. Try some long continuous hums, then some bursting hums. (Do this for 2 minutes). 7. Hum the letter 'N'. Try some long continuous hums, then some bursting hums. (Do this for 2 minutes.) 8. Spend 2 minutes putting it all together: lifting up the soft palate, pumping with the throat, getting the ears to crackle, etc.

I quit diving for a short time when they closed the abalone fishery in Northern Californina but I couldn't stay away, I love diving too much. Just like some people can move their eyes around separately, make their hair do circles on their head, only move one pectoral muscle, or recently my friend showed me that he had wings, he used some weird muscle isolation and his shoulder blades shot straight up off his back. Super excited to find out this can be learned. I am lucky to have been able to do it as a kid, but I followed the video tutorial just to see if it lines up with the muscles that I have been using for years. Yes it does!! Especially hummming with your mouth closed and hearing your hummmm amplified from the inside. Also when I touch the soft palate with my finger, my soft palate gently pinches my finger when I am equalizing. These are perfect indicators, I can't wait to tell others that it's not just a gift from the ocean gods lol It is learnable.

Thanks for the tutorial Adam! I think I’m getting there, after playing around in a shallow pool, I went to the sea today and did dives to 10m, hands-free EQ with the head upside down. I followed the lead of not letting pressure buildup, so I'm equalising more often than I do normally, pretty much every second as I go down and it works (left tube is a little more stubborn) It’s an interesting feeling, no fullness like with a regular Frenzel-type eq, to the point that I'm wondering i’m really equalised, before realising that I’m at 10m and there is no pressure, discomfort. Just a couple of question - as I equalise, I get squishy/sucky sounds in the ear, which I guess are the tubes opening slowly. This is normal, yes? After a while (30 minutes or so) I’ve noticed the equalisation gets a little more difficult, it’s a little like muscle fatigue - is this normal as well, ie the muscles need to build up a little more to support the process during longer periods, or is it just technique? thanks a bunch! ben

Hi Adam Congrats on a great video, For almost twenty years I've been unable to explain to people how I equalise hands free. This is by far the best explanation I've seen, and I'm sure it will improve my own technique too! I just open my passages as I dive and maintain equilibrium, but once I go past 20m I have to start nose pinching to supplement and at 30 it's completely ineffective, and I can no longer hold the airway open. Are there natural limits with hands free, or with practice can you improve your resilience?

But with Hands Free "Is it equalizing or reverse equalizing? I'm not sure". I have the feeling like using Frenzel is pushing the air into my ear. But Hands Free is like deflating the air from my ear. am I even close to Hands Free equalization ?
@hanswurst53096 жыл бұрын
Great video. I make handfree equalization a little bit different: when you yawn there is a little cracking in your ear, sounds like normal equalization. When you yawn a lot you can try to control this feeling and can use it for equalization. So simply yawn underwater mouth closed and youre fine ^^

Because around those years my parents liked going on road trips and my country has lots of mountains to past, and since I went on a bunch of road trips where I would just sleep then suddenly pressure was in my ears then I suddenly yawned which made the pressure go away then slowly I learned how to do it just by swallowing.

Great video Adam and by far the most comprehensive tutorial I have found! I have always been able to "click" my ears and apparently I lift the soft pallet when doing so (a mirror or front facing smart phone camera is very helpfull). I've never tried pumping with my throat at the same time. It doesn't create the any pressure on the eardrum, like when I equalize using Frenzel, but maybe it's enough. Or maybe I lower the soft pallet before pumping with the throat. It's hard to tell with a closed mouth. I'll have to try it out next time I'm in the water :) The only thing I don't understand is why the tongue need to be folded back over itself?
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're just about there! Folding the tongue back is just a stepping stone exercise that forces us to lift our soft palate to make room for the tongue :)
@KristianSloth6 жыл бұрын
Thank you fore the answer Adam! Okay, so when you've learned how to lift the soft palate correctly you don't need to fold back the tongue? I don't really hear internal ringing while humming though, but the tone does change when I lift the soft palate. I'll keep practising when I'm driving around alone in my car :D With Frenzel I feel like I could blow my eardrums if really tried. Are you able to create the same kind of pressure when you do hands free equalization or does it feel different when doing it on land?
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
It feels different than a frenzel :) very different and yes once you can lift the soft palate there isn't a need to fold the tongue back anymore :)

Hi Adam! THe best video of the kind I have seen so far, also you are a nice person. I have been trying BTV passionately during the last 2,5 years. I was so far trying mainly the swallowing maneuver but what I managed was only to momentarily open the tubes, so little air coming in, not practical at all during dive. So, at first, thank you for helping me understand it is not the proper way, I have almost dismantled my jaw ! :-) Now, one question please, hope not getting tiring, I think other people will find the answer useful too: It is a different thing to me to yawn normally and to try yawning voluntarily. In a spontaneous yawn the tubes open and I feel a peculiar contraction of the muscles around them. I cannot reproduce this funny feeling when yawning voluntarily. My soft palate raises a lot , I think i contract the same muscles but nothing opens. I guess it is the tensor veli palatini (from what I have read, it is the muscle that does the job) I contract in the first case via some kind of indirect innervation. I wonder: Do all people have the ability to voluntarily contract this muscle ? Is it only a matter of training and understanding to do it , or some of us will never get it? Why since my palate raises, I get no tube opening? Thanks in advance, anyway you already helped me :-)
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! When I yawn spontaneously and voluntarily I feel the same movement- in this case I think it might be interesting for you to yawn several times voluntarily until that yawn becomes spontaneous. I like to think- or hope! that everyone can BTV but to be honest there is just so little studies done on the topic that I just don't know if everyone can....I assume everyone can control those muscles....but arriving at that control is just such a different journey for everyone. I really wish I could help you more!

I watched your video to verify if I am doing handsfree or something else but I have no clue. Do you think it’s just a matter of practice and strengthen the muscles? Have a great day ahead!

I am in the same position as you are. Have you figured it out yet?
@whitemaitairussian20502 жыл бұрын
@@georgezazanis No, unfortunately not. Another freediving instructor told me, that if it works on land, it is just a matter of practice to manage it under water. But I haven’t trained enough yet (baby break ;)))

Thank you so much for your fantastic tutorials! The initial practise comes quite easy to me and I feel a soft crackling sound in my ears. However it really make me yawn after a few times - any tips how to control the “urge to yawn”? Many thanks!

hahahaha no tips at all to control the urge to yawn haha I'm not sure it can be done really :)

Same with me.. I try to start yawn and stop. I hear cracking sound. But I actually yawn few time try... I should try this in the water. Not sure if it will work or not....

You have a great way of explaining how this works and how to start to get a feel for things. I just have to figure out how to lift the middle of my soft palate without going into a yawn…I kept going into a full yawn and after 10 yawns my my eyes are so watery like I’m crying 😅

Thanks for the great video, it's really helpful! I would like to ask though could you do a video about training for dynamic apnea. As I battle a lot to progress in this even after training my dynamics for a long time.

Can do! That would be a great idea for a video :) I have a few others to make before hand but it's coming

Thank you for your tutorial and all other videos! I really enjoy watching them. I wonder if it possible to feel the ear popping (similarly how you can feel it with Valhalla or Frenzel) on a surface without a mask? I can feel something in my ears but it's nothing comparing to when I pinch my nose. I heart that hands-free equalization is very similar to Frenzel, but instead of nose pinching, you should use your mask. Is it a true statement or it's something different from what you described? Thank you!

Awesome instructional man! I have always been able to instinctively delonca equalize... But only in one ear lol.
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
thanks buddy! haha that's pretty normal. I have an exercise in my 'solving equalisation problems' video that will increase the flexibility of your Eustachian tubes and allow you to do this in both ears

Back then, Will T was the first I meet able to do this. It was 19 if I remember. Even so I coudnt hate him for this, one of the nicest guys I've dived with. I can click my tubes on demand, and hands free equalize in the plane, but never underwater. Not sure why...

Hi Adam, Thank you for all your video's. Does this practice help with frenzels in general ? Im learning frenzel and thought if I watched this video it would help in general ?

simple way to master wiggling your ear by using loos frame glasses and lean forward like youre going to drop your glasses, you stop at certain point and then somehow use your ear to hold the glasses. I found it accidentally, due to my glasses are keep loosening. and somehow i think it should work to equalisation, other way that work for me is slowly wiggleling your lower jaw, side to side. I usualy combined it all. nice video, Adam regards, from Indonesia

Thank you very much Adam for sharing this great technique. I have a question, do you need pump air(like doing frenzel EQ) when doing no-hand EQ? Because I can open my eustachian tube and can hear the internal vibration(when humming), and also crackle sound, but what's next? I don't feel the pressure when lifting my throat. Is that consider as a successful no-hand EQ?

Thank you for the wonderful content. I was wondering what the importance of no hands equalization are when competitive freedivers already use nose clips?

Is this a stronger equalisation than Frenzel, or just more convenient? From what you've said it seems like the latter. But all exercises are seriously welcome as equalisation is something I'm struggling with at the moment. Thank you.
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
just more convenient. Frenzel is by far the strongest :)
@geartest5 жыл бұрын
excuse me .... once the soft palate is up ( like yawning) and so the tubes are opened, you have to pump the air with the larinx as in frenzel? I mean you need something to pump the air right?

I have severe sinusitis and tried a Nettie pot thinking it would help. Somebody told me that scuba divers, surfers, swimmers ect.... don't struggle with this because they constantly have /water/saltwater going through them flushing junk out. So, I thought to myself hmmmmm the Nettie pot might do that also. well, it sure did help get salt water stuck in my middle ear. It only made it worse, now I have water trapped in my middle ear. This video is awesome though! Just trying to follow along with you this once with your video has even helped a lot. DR ant helping maybe the divers will. :) Anyway, THANK FOR THIS VIDEO. Now if i can this this tubal opening down properly, maybe itl better the quality of my life lol
