I am really looking forward to buy one of these but have an inclination towards Nikon for no reason and if Canon's strength can be taken over by D5300 easily, it would be much easier to make up my mind. Even though, I like Nikon but do not want to end up buying something not practically best among both.

Exactly! Canon has low pass filter on sensor matrix so Nikon does sharper images! For me, video recording abilities are only like nice addon in DSLRs. Add better dynamic range and noise performance, and the winner is Nikon.

I already got myself a D5500 cause of touch screen and nice colors and saturation and HDR...but honestly canon is much better in focusing speed and accuracy..also in changing the settings in live view and video it is very bad that Nikon D5500 doesn't have that. ..also canon wins in buffer size.. At first I pretty much had my mind made up that the Nikon D5500 was the one for me but now I'm leaning more toward the Canon because I want to get into making videos and that noise the Nikon makes was kind of a turn off. I love that the Nikon has better image quality but I think the Canon is still capable of taking great images as well, it's the photographer not that camera that makes the photos good. Please like or comment if you think I'm making the right choice? No rush, as I'm not getting either of these cameras any time soon, still trying to save, but please give me some feedback.

You can hide the noise, but not the lousy AF in video! I hope you're an expert in pulling focus and follow-focusing a moving subject.
@Mrmattsvlog1008 жыл бұрын
Jay Fergee personally, i would go with the nikon because of the deep grip for my big hands, video quality and overall structure. But its easy to eliminate the af noise but getting a mic (lav or shotgun). The good thing about dslrs is the mic input so there is no need for lens change unless its really an issue. Another way to eliminate this is just go all out manual focus. Thats just my personal preference
@cooloox8 жыл бұрын
Matthew Drake The average person in the street (who these cameras are targeted towards) has little-to-no skills in manually pulling focus and especially follow-focus of a moving subject. The Canon is much more suited to these consumers. Nikon's video AF is a joke and manual focus is out of the question for the average consumer.

A quick question for all the wedding videographers: Do you use autofocus ? I am a wedding photographer and shoot with my most beloved Nikon D750 (which has amazing picture quality and video as well. Can shoot upto 1080 60fps) and have invested a lot in Nikon glass. I have started shooting videos as well and was think of buying the Nikon D5500 as it would serve as a back-up camera as well.
@DavidDeblaere9 жыл бұрын
It's actually really simple to choose between these. If you want awesome picture quality, pick the Nikon. If you want a user friendly camera that makes decent pictures and awesome video, pick the Canon. For me, the D5500 is too small to handle. So it was an instant "don't buy" (I've got big hands). Same goes for the a6000. The T6S/760D just felt better and the image quality is still really good.

After watching a number of reviews, this one was the best, I chose the Canon T6s with the 18-135mm Kit. I purchased it refurbished direct from Canon and saved $160, it worked perfectly and looked like it had never been used. My Reasons: 1) Silent focus. 2) Thumb wheel for aperture on back. 3) Back-button focus. 4) Top info screen. 5) Easy menu. 6) Pro-like feel. 7) Cross-type focus points. 8) Fully articulating screen. After using the camera for about eight months I find that I use live view less and less and the view-finder more and more because I can make most composure and composition adjustments without looking at the menu; what I need is usually displayed in the view-finder; I do wish the view-finder was brighter. I am new to DSLR and wanted a camera that was easy to use but also had more features than I imagined I needed so I could grow. I am very happy with my decision and have purchased three more lenses: Canon 55-250mm, Canon 10-18mm, and Sigma 17-50mm. I've also purchased four Yangnuo hot-shoe flashes; three 560s, and one 685 ETTL, and the 560TX controller. Unless I inherit a bundle of money it looks like I'm a Canon man for a while. Buying a Sony a6000 was a real temptation, but in the end price, ease of use, fully articulating screen and lens selection was the determining factor. Though I still pine for an a6000 I wouldn't trade my T6s for one. I may save up and buy the Sony later this year, hoping that the price will come down or that I can find a good used one on C/L.

Regards to AF noise for Video, I don't think you should include it in this comparison as it is lens dependent, not camera body. It is Nikon's silent wave V. S. Canon's STM. There will be very little difference between the two once you put Nikon's AF-P (Nikon's version of stepping motor) lens on it.

See KZbin videos about the use of the app. Then WiFi kontrol is great on the d5500. For pictures d5500 is the best. And control of video aperture in live view isn't necessary if you use auto-iso. So his negative points...are pointless...

Akash J True. But a pro goes deeper than the surface and deeper than the spec hand sheet....with a deeper knowledge his negative point are misleading. Hi nice video! I bought the T6s ( in Germany 760D ) and it's my first DSLR. I tried the Nikon and the Canon 700D in a shop for maybe 4 hours, the seller went crazy X-D, the 760D was not available, I bought it on 2nd May and got it last Saturday. For me was the Canon better, because the buttons feels right on place and for me it was easer to handle. Maybe the LCD is smaller but the display on the top is a nice feature, I use it all the time the same for the wheel around the set button. I love it and I think it was for me a better choice.

I started with a 70D, for both video and photos. I wanted to invest in some good glass, but before I spent that kind of money I decided to sell my 70D and move to an A6000 and get some nice glass for it. I did that because the DSLR’s (Nikon, Canon) just were not providing the technology I was wanting in my camera. Things like live view in the view finder. The ability to change, settings (shutter, iso, and aperture) on the fly while recording video are the features I needed. Focus peeking, and so much more it became obvious to me a year ago that mirrorless is the future, so I switched before I got hooked into the Canon glass. I think anyone just getting into photography should seriously consider where the industry is going or not going before you invest to deeply to change. Thank you both for your unbiased informative videos. I don't really trust many of the other online reviewers out there. You two have earned my trust and thats a hard thing to do.

At this point in time (December 2016), the Canon sells for about US $250 (T6i: $150) more than the Nikon. That's significant. If you want the very best image quality with this size sensor for stills, the Nikon has it. The Canon is better for video, mainly because of live view usability issues with the Nikon. However, if you mainly shoot video, a mirror-less camera may be the better choice. Personally, I do not like the fact that Canon has stuck with an APS-C sensor that is 10% smaller than everyone else. They should have fixed that years ago, since it results in images that are about 13% noisier at any given ISO.

Hi Toby, I realise this is an old video, but I'm very curious about something. I just watched the video again on a 50 inch screen and where you were comparing the higher ISO images side by side the Canon is noticeably superior! I paused each comparison. There is less noise in each high ISO image from the Canon and the Nikon images are all underexposed which would hide noise. I'm trying to work out why you're saying the Nikon is better. It's definitely not on my screen. As an aside note I have noticed several recent model Nikons seem to be underexposing images, including the D500. Matt Granger uses a D5 and he too noticed the D500 kept capturing darker images (than his D5) in the same shooting conditions. Great overall comparison, by the way. Keep up the excellent work.

Hey there...I am just a beginner into the DSLR world and since last couple of weeks I am looking for buying an entry level DSLR... And being a beginner one can understand the limitation of a newcomer... So within 3 weeks from now I need to buy either of these.. But which one is still a confusion... On paper the Nikon is providing a 60fps with full HD Video and it's also showing good performance on low light... But in reality I need to know how much ISO do we actually use as since the difference only showing from 32000 and the other thing is how does it feel like the difference in video quality when it comes to full HD 60 fps vs 30 fps since I won't be using the DSLR for HD purpose on regular basis.My purpose of buying this camera at moment is simple and that's to take photos with my family & friends, functions like wedding & birthday parties, landscapes like beach locations, some animal photography( not a serious wild life one) and of course take it with travel and tour destination.... My mind is going for CANON T6s but I need to know whether the areas mentioned above is really affecting for an entry DSLR user like me because what I like about Canon is its live view and it's easy of use with touch screen and of course not to mention its AF points with all cross hair type... Please do kindly reply me as you find finished on reading this comment.. Will Kindly appreciate for immediate reply... Thank you

I was seriously considering buying the T6s, but I ended up buying a T5i because I have found a very good deal on a kit. I'm a beginner and photography is mostly a hobby for me, and I like the friendly use on Canon cameras. I don't regret my choice at all. I have achieved amazing results with my T5i. In my researches I also considered Nikons, but the smooth autofocus on Canon cameras (specially with the STM lenses) was a decisive pro

Carol Jedwab Pekelman The T5i is still a very good camera and you have a little extra left over to buy a nice prime lens :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pICnhop5ndyZg7c

PhotoRec Toby Exactly! Last week I got the new 50mm and I'm in love with it (still think it's a little bit too noisy for a STM lens, but the quality of the pictures are really good)

I'd rather to choose a d5500 even more manually hard points.its big deal for me a long life battery since both them are good.for me nikon it's my better choice because it's more challenges . though canon it's quite good.

Hello. Please guide me for the following. I am purchasing a new nikon d5500. The major concern is now regarding the purchase of lenses. I have made up my mind to go for a nikon prime 50 f1.8. The other lens i am confused between is nikon 18-140 and 55-300. Plz suggest. I really appreciate the way you present your "to the point views". Please do the needfull and oblige. Warm regards.

Hello Toby and Christina, I have a Sony A7 II, with it I got the 28-70 kit lens. Now I’m interested in the Sony 28mm f2, will I be repeating lenses because I already have it in the kit lens, or will I notice a difference in quality if I’m doing large prints? I take photography very seriously but it’s a hobby.
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
RickBSO It will be sharper and you get better aperture f2 vs f/3.5 in the current kit you have BUT the difference in IQ won't be HUGE. noticeable when pixel peeping but not for day to day snaps.

I was a Canon 600D user since I got into photography as a hobby 2 years ago. But the main problem with that camera was the very poor low light performance and limited focus capabilities. I changed a while ago to the Sony a6000, even though it looks as if it is a compact camera, but the RAW files I get out of this camera are amazing with the 24 MP sensor that offers sharper, higher resolution images with a satisfying dynamic range that the Canon 600D could not offer. I was really amazed with the built in HDR that the sony offers where the JPEGs out of that are sometimes better than the RAW files out of the Canon 600D. Further advantages are the light wait, more compact and travel friendly design, 11 fps, and the great fast auto-focusing capabilities of the Sony. You can get the built in time lapse app for around $10 and it is really worth it. Finally, I really recommend the Sony A6000 for anyone who wants a travel friendly camera, with great performance and provides a space to grow in photography.

Are you shooting 30i or 30p, or whatever your your frame rate is. If you are having even horizontal bands throughout your video, you are using 30/24/60i than 30/24/60p of your camera. I personally haven't seen the footage so I can't be sure! Check your video settings- might work!

I just checked and it says I'm using 30fps and my bars are going vertical? But if I change that setting it ends up moving to the top of the video. Does the memory card matter?

I would go with the Canon t6s, one reason it works with my Mac book pro. The other reason is that Canon offers way more lens options for the t6s. The stm line of lens for the price in unbeatable. Not to mention the wealth of used lens and accessories that can be found.

I bought d5500 few months back and I'm loving it. My first DSLR and only reason I chose it was that it was newer when I bought it and it felt great at the shop. :-) If you could do a video on time lapse photography and some beginner scenic photography e.g. waterfalls, ocean scenary etc. it would be great. I live in Bay Area and I'd like to do some pacific coast scenery shooting. Thank you for your videos!

Comparing Nikon D5500 with Cann T6i rather than T6s would be a better option, as they are more similar in nature. nice comparison though!! The problem of choosing sony or any other mirrorless offering over nikon or canon is that for people already invested in a system cannot switch over because of legacy lens support, especially for someone in a third worls country where second hand camera market hasn't thrived!!

Hey Toby I need Some serious HELP ! I'm down to these two cameras and i personally like the nikon environment & built more than canon and i need these cameras for doing KZbin product reviews of Smartphones and other Gadgets. So i want to know which camera will be better for Videography ? I would want it to take nice pictures too but i saw the Samples at your website where the Canon seems to be losing ground, a little to the Nikon ! And Not having manual aperture control on D5500 will how badly affect the video shooting possibilities ? I'll be buying one in a few days i really want a professional's advice ! Thanks a Lot !

have you considered other brands? Tony Northrup recommends Panasonic cameras for video work, instead of either Canon or Nikon. Panasonic offers great image quality but they have a few less mp, despite this, I don't think it would matter, since you won't be making fine prints the size of a wall.

I bought the Canon 760D this week and did a short video take with a simple 18-55mm Canon lens. The autofocus was terribly noisy using AF. In your comparison you mentioned that the Canon is quite silent, can it be my lens?

+AcousticSong - Guitar & Co I'm thinking it is. You might wanna check if it's specifically the STM (STepper Motor, but you might wanna remember it more as SilenT Motor, lol) model.

Good for you! Hope it helps you heaps. I'm saving up for a DSLR myself and was torn between these two until I found this video. If only the T6s was closer to the D5500's price it would've been a way easier choice.

i am a beginner....what should i buy between Nikon D5300 and Canon T6i??What lens should be good for me????
@trainmonrovia19128 жыл бұрын
I'm a Canon shooter, so my sense is that I could easily go with Nikon but not with Sony or Pentax because of their limited lens choices/values. Also, being able to look through a DSLR viewfinder without having to turn on the unit has always been a big plus for me over mirrorless cams. I like seeing the actual image reflected off a mirror. It feels so natural. The D5500 is significantly cheaper than the Canon T6s, so that could win me over. However, the video problems you mentioned re the Nikon is troubling. Thanks MAN!
