Hands-on: Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary LE Moonshine Gold

I have a Speedmaster that I still wear that was given to me 10 days after Buzz Aldrin was the first man to ever wear a watch on the moon. He wore a .321 cal Omega Speedmaster. My Speedmaster was built around October 1968 and my research shows it is one of the first conversions to the .861 model. But since it was built before Apollo 11 landed, it has no special writing on the back other than the normal "hippocampus" stamp on the back casing. I've had it "tuned up" over the years to keep it clean, but it looks brand new. I love my pre-lunar landing Omega Speedmaster and I told my son it MUST say in the family forever. My bezel still has the "dot over 90' as well.

It’s up to you “dad” to make him love mechanical timepieces instead of wearing a smart watch and/or wearing no watch at all. My daughter is 23 and she is loving mechanical watches...

@@WatchAdvisor He's in his early '30s. I also previously owned an Omega crystal Constellation with a gold wristband from the 1980s. But it is not, as you know, a mechanical watch. It's a very nice accurate and slim looking watch but the "Constellation" is now only coming back into style. My son gets many compliments for the slim gold wristband and its Gold sparkled rare face. The face alone is so rare that it makes the watch a classic. I gave it to him as a gift for graduating from Villanova. But before he gets my pre-Lunar landing Omega Speedmaster, he's going to have to spend a few bucks on my funeral expenses. Thanks for asking.

I have the stainless steel version of this watch coming in a few months. The full gold version was surprisingly well priced, but shame it was already sold out before the official unveiling. Jean-Claude also seems likable, he clearly likes his job. Thanks for a great video!

Dror S I talked to Raynald Aeschlimann, CEO Omega, today and he told me that these Astronauts are not for sale and he gave strict order to the entire Omega network, ADs and boutiques, to please not sell them... So the question who made them was obsolete... He also told me that he knows that there are some already being offered online and his team will find out who sold them ... Sorry I don’t have any better news for you...

That "Moonshine Gold" Speedmaster made me drool. I wonder how NASA would ever have allowed a piece of the moon to be sold publically. But it was stated in the video that the moon piece came from a meteorite, I guess that's fair game. Omega probably put a piece of the moon the size of a grain of sand somewhere inside the watch. It is a beautiful piece of equipment. Does anybody know how much this version costs on the resale market?

Omega got it right with the Gold Apollo Tribute version but the " Metal Magic " steel Speedmaster is way too much kitsch with wrong official timing on the watch box ! Then again, De gustibus non est disputandum...

@@WatchAdvisor well. You will find some number to justify a limited edition if you look hard enough. I think that's just a cheap trick. Make a watch that you are proudly selling and give everyone willing to pay the price a watch. Dont sell it short, dont give discounts. Just make a watch at a fix price. Omega always does this stuff with limited editions and see how soft the second hand market is compared to Rolex.
