I’ve come back to this video after first watching it years ago when it came out. Totally different perspective now that I’m more educated and can appreciate the rarity and the history of some of these models. Just like back then, though, aesthetically I prefer the older, pre-professional cases. There’s something about the slimmer lugs and no crown-guards that’s more representative of a chronograph design than the later cases.

Oh man you guys should definitely do an episode on just the collectors speedmasters. There's so many good ones. My favorite is the speedmaster rattrapante. The first split second with the troublesome history. I don't think enough credit goes to this particular watch. I firmly believe that this watch is very far ahead of its time, in fact I don't believe we've gotten that far yet. Someday the speedmaster 3540.50 will get it's credit, and it's history will turn into a positive, and hardcore omega collectors will definitely look for this watch. There pretty easy to find right now for incredible deals, easily the best deal in all of luxury watches period with a complex mechanism cheap to service. It's beautiful. People complain about the weight, but I love heavy watches, after all time should never be taken lightly.

I don't know what it is about these but the indices markers and small bracelet links don't seem like they "line up" to me.. the way the hour markers are sunk between two planes make it look misaligned to me at certain angles.. the same with the small polished links.. they look offset to me... am i imagining this or is like optical allusion? contrast this with a dial that has a metal plane and applied markers with 3 link bracelet.. there's nowhere that lines don't "match up"... I want to love this but I need help with my ocd!

I recently bought the 3861 Speedy Pro. While I find the history fascinating my preference is for the newest innovations. Co-axial escapement, silicon hairspring etc. I also bought the blue face/red hand ‘57. Now that watch is a stunner with an arguably better movement than the 3861, though an automatic. My favourite of the two is definitely the 57. This is one very nice watch.

I bought a modern Speedmaster a few years back and for some reason I didn't appreciate the watch. I eventually sold it off for modern pieces. I may have purchased it because I thought I needed a Speedmaster in my collection, I am not sure. Now several years later, I have really grown to appreciate and better understand vintage watches. I decided that a 1970s 145.022 (861) Speedy would be a great wearable vintage watch I could really enjoy.

I think getting a nice 'step-dial' one is a good idea. You have something visually that any collector can see its pre-74 (i think). But you can get lucky and buy one for the same price as a later one because not every seller notices the difference.
