@@anthonygill3261 tbh elusive fighters who are good with evading and slipping punches actually have an advantage with having their guard down. Think naseem hamid. Fighters that are slower but durable. ones that are good at catching punches with their arms and hands have a better advantage with a high guard. It actually also depends on your body type and style. Skinnier fighters with long arms tend to be very elusive, whereas more compact guys tend to be less so.

My coach always told me that I should develop sound fundamentals of guard before trying any different variations because working proper technique allows you to for instance fight with low hands and still keep some fundamentals like head movement. But if a fighter jumps straight into a low guard with shitty head movement and positioning, he’s just gunna get worked by a fighter with good fundamentals

Agreed. Everytime i adopt high guard in boxing everybody just uses the opportunity to keep me shelled up... Its funny how adopting a tight guard actually makes people more aggressive...like a challenge. Putting your guard up is like saying "hey i can't see very well, come hit me a bunch". Keeping your hands a little away from your face keeps them thinking. If your hands are stuck to your face, it gives them control.

A good teacher tells you what to do, but a great teacher then demonstrates why to do it, and then lets you figure out for yourself if and when to make exceptions. Exactly! If there was a perfect right way to fight then all the best who have fought would be fighting the same way. But they don't. The best has been many different fighters with many different variations to how they fought people. Use what works for you if it's working. Watch the best to get ideas and make them your own. Instead of putting my hands down, i tighten my guard, resting my elbows in my body and go really close to my opponent and either take body shots by blocking them and attacking very little, or dodging or blocking head shots. the elbows resting in my body makes them take no stamina from the gard and be easier to defend body shots
