The thing is Connor crossed the line when he knocked Ned down and called him faggot. And, bullied people, when they finally snap, are not thinking about taking the high moral ground. They are just releasing all their repressed feelings of anger and resentment at the injustice they've had to endure. Additionally, children are not equipped to take on the kind of burden the headmaster is laying on Ned. Who is taking care of Ned?

Ned calls somebody gay and gets expelled. Ned was called gay multiple times, got his head flushed down the toilet, and was beat up, but the headmaster looked the other way because the guy who did it was on the rugby team.

For Ned, Conor Masters is the Handsome Devil. After all, when Conor enters the story/essay, Ned says, "he's the guy that changed everything." That's how I took it anyway. I also think you guys should add Dating Amber to the movie list. No rush, but it'll be a good piece to dive into the queer rep. It's also Irish too which is fun. 😇

I always thought Handsome Devil was reference to the Smith's song. It's a conversation between verse and chorus the verse is exploring same sex attraction and the chorus is the heteronormative expectation.

Being Irish and gay myself, I’m only too well aware of the kind of corruption that goes on, which has dogged our homeland for generations, among those that pretend to be Catholic and hide behind Catholic Social Teaching to hide their hateful attitudes, even though I’m also still a devout Catholic 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️

Fair play to you being able to walk the line of cognitive dissonance by staying devoutly catholic while also gay. I couldn’t stay in a church that so obviously hated my very existence.

I put this in a reply to someone else but just thought I'd pop this here too on the whole "is Ned gay or not?" debate. The director had this to say: "He could be gay, he could be straight. But more than anything, he is just a lonely guy who needs a friend," he says. "There is no expected romantic outcome between the two guys. This is a story of friendship." So however you interpret it is valid. Not that you need the director's permission to interpret it how you want.

If you like Nicholas Galitzine's acting, I recommend that you watch one of his earlier movies, 'The Beat Beneath My Feet'. Not to review (it's not about "gay shit"!), but Nick is quite good in it, as are the rest of the cast. The ending is rather predictable, but it's still a sweet film...I would hope you enjoy it.

I’ll add my voice to requests for a reaction to Dating Amber. Two more movies I recommend just as strongly: - Philomena (with Judy Dench). Same strict, pernicious Irish Catholic values . Queerness is present as a background context which becomes an important factor as the movie progresses… Prepare your tissues. It’s not entirely sad, but wistful and tinged with acceptance and hope for a better world. Judy Dench’s best role ? I’m in. - The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A seminal movie about coming of age, sexual trauma (pervasive but never shown), found family - including a wonderful gay character played by Ezra Miller and a fantastic ally (Emma Watson, aka Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter films). Beautiful happy ending. This one will leave you cheering.

seeing the part where mr sherry himself doesnt believe in things getting better but tries to get connor to believe literally ripped my heart out, i think thats why the part where the team stands up for connor, connor playing and winning and freaking tht coach showing human decency and respect (the bar for him was 6ft under the ground), and mr sherry introducing his partner and being open about his queerness hits so so so hard. i was so not into the movie when i started watching it, felt a bit over the top and then i ended up crying lol, love your guys reaction, it ws beautiful, and ur discussion too was very interesting and kind of educational to listen too.

Seeing kids ( or adults!) do the right thing in difficult circumstances does warm the heart, particularly with so many people in power seemingly without a moral compass . Great reaction, as always. No wonder Mick Galatzine was just named “one to watch in 2023” by Variety Magazine. His facial expressions alone make his acting a cut above.

So glad you reacted to this! I can’t think of very many other movies that have two main queer characters that don’t actually get together in the end and that’s a big reason about why I love it so much. Queer friendships are so important and need to be celebrated like this. Also any gay character of Andrew Scott’s is always going to make me emotional, he’s so fantastic. Do I get to be more of a hipster since I know Nicholas Galitzine from this movie rather than RWRB? 😂 (Also people who are debating it, I am on team ‘Ned is gay’ please see my reply and reasoning under that comment haha)

i think a couple things where so important and made this movie so interesting. I love that it is not a romance centered story. I love that every character is flawed and makes BIG mistakes, even the ones that are likable and that you are rooting for are not perfect or do the right thing every time. No one in this film is the perfect upstanding character, they all make a lot of missteps but importantly a bunch of them acknowledge and own up to their mistakes and try to then do better. Some of the conversations and situations they represented in this film are so deep and so important and so real, and often not portrayed in film. They went for the complexities of real life, school life, culture, age, sexuality and the complexities of human nature. They didn't shy away from showing "messy things" or filming scenes that make the viewer really think about everything at play and how each character is navigating life and their circumstances. I also just absolutely love the rugby field scene with Connor, how the tables turn and it turns into the student teaching the teacher after the teacher taught the student. This film really makes you think. I love that. also not sure if you would react to this but, have you considered "Everybody's Talk about Jamie" preferably the pro shot filmed version of the stage musical as i think its better but there is also a movie version on amazon prime thats slightly different.

You guys (Alex and Josh) are absolute crack-ups. I luv the banter between yourselves and your views about certain scenes. I was particularly touched witnessing Alex's emotional teary reaction to the locker room scene. It's unfortunate that you did not continue to view the scene where after scoring the winning goal, Conor went up to the team's teary coach and put out his hand in a gesture of good sportsmanship and no-hard feelings. Great job guys. Luv the accents. The movie is brilliant. The script writers and actors, in particular, Fionn and Nicholas should be commended in their ability to tell such a beautiful and compelling story on screen. Thank you. 💟 A

I love this movie and I am so happy you discovered it and did a reaction. Next time you watch it, look at the headmaster's tie. I am almost positive that he is also gay, but in that time frame, teachers could not be "out". The fact that he new to put Connor and Ned as room mates... and the way he talked to the coach.... I'm sure he was protecting Sherry as much as he could without coming out. (Also, the way he did the double look at Sherry's boyfriend at the game).... Again, thanks for your insightful reactions.... PEACE !

It is so interesting that you guys keep referring to Ned as "out" when he is never directly confirmed to be gay in the movie. There is actually quite a big debate surrounding whether he is actually gay or if he is just so tired of denying the rumor that he doesn't bother correcting people anymore. Of course, we as the audience are led to believe that he is gay because that's what all the characters think but despite a constant narration from Ned himself, he never confirms or denies rumors or ever mentions being attracted to other guys. So are the rumors actually true? And in the end, does it even matter if all his classmates think it anyway?

I got the impression that Ned was straight, and it is part of the greater narrative that all the viewers make an assumption that is incorrect, formed by reacting to how others are reacting rather than their being any empirical proof

When I first saw the movie, I thought Ned never said he was gay & therefore it was left for us to decide. But on the 2nd watch (with ASWT) I realized just before he calls out Conor, he says something like, “Why does Conor get to be adored when we’re the same?”
@paulholbrook3848
@paulholbrook3848 Жыл бұрын
@gailoverholt6498 When he says they are the same, I think he just means that they are both "outsiders". I don't think it's meant to be taken that they are exactly the same. I have watched this movie several.times over the years, as I absolutely adore it, and I have carefully watched the language choices to try and see what's really there (a skill adapted during my own queer journey through life) and I don't think it's an accident that's Ned's sexuality is never expressly confirmed. Even Ned early on, when he first uses the word gay in relation to describing the "sound" never ties it to sexuality. He defines it as different, strange, odd.

Let me preface by saying I LOVE THIS FILM and it's heart; truly one of my favourites and one I'm proud to have in my film library. Now, to the outing scene that many criticized (both critics and many film goers) when it first came out: What Ned did to Connor was absolutely wrong, but anyone with a modicum of critical thought can understand why he did it. That's not an excuse, but it is the reason. Remember, Connor assaulted Ned and when he did that he forfeited any right to Ned's understanding. Human emotion is a real factor and can lead people to dark places. These facts must be understood before proffering blanket statements about Ned being the bad guy in this situation; which sadly many people did and do. On the matter of outing, there are times when it is absolutely acceptable to do so; specifically when it is people in politics/public eye who are privately gay but publicly homophobic and act on it (note the words ACT ON IT) If they don't act on it AKA try to pass legislation or campaign against Queers, then they can keep their secret. I make no apologies for destroying these people, most notably conservatives/right wingers. During the late 70's and 80's, outing became a necessary weapon against our enemies and, unfortunately, we still have such enemies today. It's important to make this distinction because there can be no understanding for such people, not in 2023. Finally: As for the headmaster, bitch please. You literally allowed Ned's bullying to go on without comment or action and then have the temerity and nerve to lecture him about being "the better person". The hypocrisy and not-at-all-subtle double standard and latent homophobia is repulsive to observe.

On the subject of outing hypocritical people in power, I believe one of the Donald Strachey films addressed this. It's a series of...3 or 4 movies about a gay private eye. I think it's the first one (Third Man Out) that explores this, possibly Don and his husband are in disagreement about whether outing is ever right at the beginning. Maybe I have to go and rewatch them now...
@crystalpritchard5065
@crystalpritchard5065 Жыл бұрын
I also think an important part of the outing scene is that it’s not planned, he’s pushed to edge and it’s a completely spur of the moment decision, and one he regrets almost instantly. I love that the movie doesn’t try to excuse it, but that the audience can still understand how Ned got pushed to that point. We don’t agree, and we aren’t meant to, but we can still sympathize with him as a character.

I didn't think this movie was going to get me all in my emotions but it did. That conversation between teacher and student broke my heart. I think of the teachers in Florida and other States that can't be themselves. I don't agree on outing anyone. However, I question how much abuse "we" people who decide to disclose or put up with bullying should tolerate. Why must we bare the burden of our closeted queer brothers that join in our abuse? And I know, everyone have their own journey and one wrong doesn't justified the other. I wouldn't have liked it if someone outing me, while I was figuring out myself (even though the bullies knew before me). But sometimes my moral compass has questions. I cried too, when the boys decided to think for themselves and not listen to a very unfit teacher/coach.

This reaction reminds me I do wish to watch this film again. Also, does Josh have a nigh-eidetic memory? He's always the one that seems to recall some obscure fact or detail about a movie or show during the reactions.

Wondering if you'd be up for doing reactions to wlw content as well, Nick has a new movie "Bottoms" that's probably on Prime. And also Everything Everywhere All At Once if you haven't already watched it, which also has queer main characters.

I gotta side with Alex here. The headmaster can’t criticize Ned for his lack of compassion when he never gave Ned any support. He just let Ned be bullied. And, horrors! I’m *just now* realizing I’m kind of okay with Ned calling out Conor. After all, Conor first disappeared on Ned, then physically attacked him. Yeah, yeah, I know Conor’s going thru hell, but he’s seen Ned go thru hell every day.

I'm not sure Ned is even gay its not explicitly stated. I just think he is alternative and that was enough to stand out and be labeled as gay and bullied. Otherwise I think the movie would have had a more romantic angle.

It would be great if you could increase the volume of the clips. Your volume is quite high but easy to adjust, but then I have to readjust for the clip and if you speak over it, I have to lower the volume again. I'm enjoying your reactions and have subscribed, so it's not a complaint per se, just a suggestion/request.

Interesting thing that happened when I introduced this film to my family, is that when the scene of Ned outing Conor came up, my cis-straight mother was much, much more aggressively UNforgiving of the action than I, a sapphic nb, and I think my views on it can be better summarized via using your words when that scene came up, and the messy 'infighting' (if we want to call it that) we sometimes see in the community, these misguided attempts to protect ourselves or ease our own hurt while inadvertently or even purposefully hurting other LGBTQIA+ people, the Queer Experience™ if we want to call it that is still so full of frustration and hurt and desperation and exhaustion and teary hope, that I absolutely agree a film like this should be presented for educational purposes for that reason as well, for that difference in interpretation, for that intimate understanding of how unfortunate it all is and how the hurt inflicted upon us can lead to ramifications that are sometimes aeons away from a direct jab made by those outside Our Team who hurt us. I don't know, I'm just particularly stuck (positively) on that aspect of the film, this attempt to be Understanding and to find Hope in one another, Strength, and how the traumas inflicted upon us can lead us to create more hurt on our own. I feel this film gets that aspect, the differences in experiencing being queer, how our likely isolation makes it progressively more and more difficult to connect and reach out to people like us as we grow older, I don't know, many thoughts, I got this far and have no idea what I'm on about anymore, BUT YES, and it all ending in HOPE is the best aspect, NO MORE QUEER TRAGEDIES PLS- Or, yknow, sometimes, for the tragedy lovers- but not as a DEFAULT-- ALL THAT ASIDE, THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR WATCHING THIS FILM AND FOR YOUR WONDERFUL CONTENT ♥

I don't think it's made explicit that he's straight. But they also never outright say he's gay. They leave it fairly ambiguous (in my opinion) - Ned never says he's gay, other people say he's gay. There are a couple of things he says where he aligns himself with Conor, but they could all be interpreted as "we're both different", where different doesn't necessarily mean queer.

It's up for interpretation. There is a strong case for Ned being bisexual. But Ned confirms or denies nothing. 😂 Very on brand for an edgy, kind of try hard, nonconformist type character.
