Monika Böhnert and her two colleagues are cigar rollers. In the Ortenau region, there are probably only three of them left who professionally practice this ancient art by hand. A handful of the dried and cracked tobacco Geudertheimer is about three grams. For the cigar called Robusto, they need three times that amount. The work at the wrapping table is only one of three phases in the manufactory in Lahr. A small roller wraps the tobacco into a tobacco leaf. Monika Böhnert takes care to maintain the correct tension during the wrapping process. The fact that it is wound crookedly is deliberate. The right amount is a matter of feeling. How tight the cigar should be is also a matter of feeling.
Both are based on experience. And later shapes the enjoyment factor when puffing a cigar.
