I am 71, when this record came out it must have been in the late 50s, my sister and I had been exposed to polio, we were at a Christmas party with my cousin who was diagnosed with polio, on St Stephen's day. At that time the only precaution was ro stay in bed with curtains pulled, very difficult for 6 year old. We had the wireless moved to our bed room, this was played 5 or 6 times a day. Very different Ireland.

I, too, remember my father, God rest his soul, singing this song. He was born in Korea in 1935, lost both parents during Korean War, and was sent to a foster family in San Jose, CA where he went to highschool and college. He came back to Korea after he graduated, but I guess he was more or less Americanized, a little different from other Koreans of his time as a result. For example he never watched Koren TV for the rest of his life, he only watched AFKN(American Forces Korea Network, a broadcasting service for American soldiers stationed in Korea ). He wasn't into rock and roll (because he was in the States before r&r), but he liked country songs like "Take me home, country road", "The City of New Orleans" or "Rhinestone Cowboy". I was thinking about him today, and I remembered this song, and it led me here.

i sang this song as a young girl and it never left my head. Growing up, my brother (on the basis of the movie) told me that poor Tom had killed a stage coach because he hadn’t known about the war’s end. For the next 30 years thereafter i always sympathised. Then about 5 years ago found this song through youtube and researched thoroughly the history of Tom Dula. i’m still sympathetic and sad at his untimely end.

I have not heard nor sang this song in 30/40 years. If it wasn’t for one Young Sheldon episode I wouldn’t have heard it. As a kid living in some mountains of rural Philippines I’ve heard this song many times get played on the radio. I didn’t know the meaning of the lyrics then. Back then it was just a song-a good tune. I didn’t know it has this kind of disturbing meaning and probably even based on a true story 😅.

When I was around five years old, in 1965, my parents bought me a little record player for Christmas and some 45's. My favorite song was Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio. One night I was in my bed singing it and my Dad yelled at me to get quiet and go to sleep. Three times he did this and I'd wait a minute and start up again. 😂 Then he said, "If you don't shut up, I'm coming in there!" I yelled back, "Well, come and get me then!!" Omgoshes!!! Clearly, one of the dumbest moves I'd ever made! Before I could figure out where to hide, I was getting my butt whipped. My Dad only spanked me maybe 10 times ever. That was one of them...and I, quite literally, asked for it! And deserved it! 🤣😭🤣😭

I was maybe 12-13; my brothers younger. We had no idea what it was we were singing about but we sure did enjoy singing it over & over. I recalled this memory when I came across book today by Sharyn McCrumb that attempts to recreate the story from the viewpoint of attorney who defended Tom. Great video.

Throughout history There've been many songs written about the eternal triangle This next one tells the story of a Mr Grayson, a beautiful woman And a condemned man named Tom Dooley... When the sun rises tomorrow, Tom Dooley... must hang... Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die I met her on the mountain There I took her life Met her on the mountain Stabbed her with my knife Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die This time tomorrow Reckon where I'll be Hadn't a-been for Grayson I'd a-been in Tennessee Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die This time tomorrow Reckon where I'll be Down in some lonesome valley Hangin' from a white oak tree Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head, Tom Dooley Poor boy, you're bound to die Poor boy, you're bound to die Poor boy you're bound to die Poor boy, you're bound to die...

My high school music teacher taught us this song back in high school in the 80’s. It popped into my head this morning as well as several times over the years. I thought nothing of singing the words to this catchy tune back then but really it’s actually a grim song to teach in schools. Can you imagine getting this pass the PC police today?!
