Hanging a 100lb Heavy Bag

I got a great deal on Craigslist for a 50 lb punching bag. After repacking it with an additional 50 lbs of sand, I needed a secure way to hang it. I used nine 3/8" x 4" lag screws to attach a 2x6 across three ceiling joists. Then, I used 5/16" x 4" lag screws to attach four Husky anchor points to the 2x6 and the joist above it. Each anchor point has a 300 lb working load limit and is attached with two of the lag screws. Since my bag already had hanging straps, I reversed my chains so the four hooks connected to the anchors and the single hook connected to the spring and bag.
The rest of the 2x6 was used to attach an iron pipe pull-up bar.

If your going to span across 3 floor boards and then hand the bag on the end of the 2x4 I'm lost on why you didn't just go into one floor joist it's the same thing

I put an iron pipe pull-up bar across the rest of the board. I also needed to position the bag in that specific place so I could park my car and use my work bench. Without those factors, hanging the bag in the middle of the board would have made more sense. However, regardless of where you hang the bag on the 2x6, spanned purpendicular across three ceiling joists it will be more stable than just going into one.

I used the rest of the 2x6 to attach a pull-up bar. If I wasn't going to have the pull-up bar, I definitely would have put the bag in the middle of the board. The board is attached across three joists with nine 3/8 x 4 inch lag screws, and two of the four anchors are also screwed into the end joist. Now, with the bag, pull-up bar, and me hanging from the bar, this setup is holding about 280 lbs with no movement.

Hey there, I used lag screws. It wasn't accurate for me to call them bolts. However, they are definitely not wood screws. I wouldn't trust wood screws in this situation. Thanks!

Good video 👍 I had a couple of questions buddy... Is that a player board ceiling? How did you locate the joists? Lastly how is the bag doing to date? Any cracks in the ceiling?

I'm not sure what you mean by player board (plaster board?) but it is just painted drywall. I located the joists by first using a stud finder to get the edges of each one. Then I used a very small drill bit (1/16") to probe the marked edges just to make sure I would be putting my bolts through the center of the joist. No cracks in the ceiling. The spring helps a lot with that.

Although this is a great video: You mention a 100lb in the title and it is a 50lb bag that you are mounting. Iron on iron isn't a good idea due to wear, it is advised to put some rope in between or have a strap between the bag and mount.

Ok so i have a 10 feet Unistrut channel with trolleys on it to hung a 90lbs punching bag and 70lbs round punching bag to roll them out of the way.. Should I bolt the unistrut channel straight to the garage ceiling joist or should I bolt down a 2x4 or 2x6 board first to ceiling then bolt down unistrut Chanel to board?? I want to use channel for the 2 punching bags, rings and a climbing rope. My ceilings are 8ft high. Thank u Also what kind of bolts should I use and do I need washers too?

I personally think 2x6 is the way to go, especially if you have drywall on your ceiling. I would use 3/8" x 4" lag screws to attach the 2x6 to the joists and possibly the same screws to attach the strut to the board if the holes in the strut are big enough. I would use washers with all the screws. Try to get the screws holding the strut to go through the board and into the joist at the same time for extra strength. Not sure how thick the strut material and washer would be so you might even want 5" screws for that part. Hope this helps. Sounds like you are going to have a really nice setup.

My garage is all drywall, will this still work? i don't know how to find the ceiling joists and if i hang my bag to the drywall itll make a huge hole. Need help

I've got drywall on my ceiling too. This will work if you take the time to find the center of the joists and if your joists are strong enough to hold the weight of the bag. Start by determining which direction your joists are running on the other side of your drywall. To find the center of the joist you should get a stud finder. They aren't very expensive and they come in handy for hanging heavy things on the walls as well as the ceiling. Stud finders help you locate either the edges or the center of the studs/joists. When you find the edge, mark it with a pencil. Your two edge marks should be about 1 1/2 inches apart. After you have the approximate edges, use a drill with a really small bit (you can also use a long finishing nail and a hammer) to probe for the joist. You will feel resistance if you are going into wood. This methods ensures that you are finding the center of the joist because you don't want to screw your bolts into the side of a joist. If your stud finder detects the cent Another method of finding studs is to use a really strong magnet and slide it across your drywall. If you feel a magnetic pull, you have likely found a nail or screw in the center of your stud. If you have access to your attic, you can go up and find the joists from above. Getting ready to hang my heavy bag in my garage with the same type ceiling. This video has been very helpful. Just curious why hang the bag on the end of the board and not the middle? Is it just out of preference of location, or will it hold up over time better on the end?

Hey there. I hung the bag on the end because I later put a pull-up bar on the rest of it. If the bag was the only thing being installed, it would have made more sense to hang it in the middle.

I just hung my 100lb bag on a stud 2x4 that’s inside my garage ceiling. with the simple hangar with swivel should I be good? It’s on pretty good and I gave it a good 30minute punch workout. It does swing a lot though

Hey Raul. I can't say if the swivel is good enough for your setup. Swivels work great to take out the rotational twisting force the bag would put on the mount as it's punched. If it were me, I would just be concerned about the bolts holding the mount working loose. Keep an eye on the mount and make sure the it's still tight against the ceiling after a few workouts. You could always get a spring in addition to your swivel to reduce some of the vibrations from your punches.

Hi Ryan - I hung my 80lbs bag the same way with a 2x6 spanning across 3 joists that the bag itself is connected to... and another 2x6 spanning across 5 joists on the attic side to brace. I am noticing a lot of shaking though even with a heavy duty spring. Are you noticing the same thing when you punch the bag?

Hey Jonathan, I don't notice any shaking but that's probably due to the way my garage was built. On the attic side, the joists are all tied together with plywood as a subfloor. That makes everything extremely strong and rigid. Your 2x6 spanning the five joists on the attic side might just not be enough to keep things from moving. You could always try plywood in the attic but that could get expensive and still might not entirely take care of the problem.

There are two reasons I hung it on the end of the board. First, I specifically wanted to hang the bag in the place I did but there was conduit in the way and I couldn't put the middle of the 2x6 where I wanted it. Secondly, I wanted to put in a pull-up bar and I used the rest of the 2x6 for that (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m33GnKWOn5qkeLs). But you're right, without those reasons, putting it in the middle would be the best way to do it. That being said, I haven't had any issues with it hanging on the end. This setup seems pretty strong. How do you pick up the bag tho to hook it that high?

That's a good question. I didn't really show that part well in the video. I had a small folding table under the chain. I squatted down and got the bag in a bear hug and then stood straight up and put it on the table. Then it was high enough to hook it. You could also get a friend to do the lifting while you hook it on.

It actually would have made more sense to use the stronger bolts/screws (3/8" x 4" or even 3/8" x 2") to mount the actual hanger instead of using the smaller lag bolts/screws to mount it. The hanger/mount itself needs to be the strongest point.

Actually, the holes in the anchor flanges were only wide enough to allow the 5/16" lag screws through. The weight of the bag is distributed between four anchors with two screws each so it's plenty strong.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. As long as your swivel is able to turn freely wherever it’s located, you’re good-to-go. The swivel is there to reduce the twisting force (torque) that is put on your mounting hardware and the surface it is mounted to. As you hit the bag, it rotates. If you have a single eye bolt holding the bag, and no swivel, the bolt could unscrew and ultimately fall. If you have a mount with two or more bolts, the back and forth twisting could enlarge the bolt holes over time and cause the mount to come loose. As long as it isn’t getting bound in the chains somehow, the swivel will reduce that torque regardless of where it is in relation to the spring. The spring is there to reduce vibrations and to lessen the stress on your setup components including swivel, mount, chain, and sewn points of contact on your bag. There is probably also a reduction of linear/horizontal force at the mounting surface. The action of the spring should be the same whether above or below the swivel.

If you have a 2x4 bottom chord truss in your garage this will not be enough. You will need a lot more material and need to go into the attic. You would additionally add a another vertical member tying the bottom chord to the top. Then running a diagnal brace across those. And maybe even doubling up bottom and top chord because they are not designed for point load. Also punching bags are a live load so forces are increased in all directions. So you want to carry the weight with as many trusses as possible. Preferably wall to wall.

Great job on the hanging. This is a renters strategy for hanging a bag lol. When moving from your straights into hooks on the combos, try to slow it down and think about maintaining the same height through the entire combo. As you move forward or laterally into a hook, you're coming up on your toes which does two things. It telegraphs the hook and puts you off balance because you not on your heels during rotation. Pretty snappy punching for an old guy though. Keep it up brother.

Sure. I built it about eight or nine years ago. I went down to a local saw mill and had the guy cut a five foot log. I asked for the straightest one possible that was about 8-9 inches in diameter.. He asked me what it was for and when I told him, he stared at me like I was from a different planet:) . I used really long drill bits from Harbor Freight to make the initial holes for the arms and the support pieces across the back. Then I used a chisel to square the holes off. It was a lot of work. The arms are maple with 1 1/2 inch pegs. I bought them from an online martial arts store. The cross supports are 4 1/2 foot long 1x2. I used to have them 5 feet long at a different house but had to go a little shorter due to space constraints. 4 1/2 feet flexes and lets the dummy move pretty well but 5 feet is probably best. For years I left all of the wood unfinished and only recently put a gray stain on it and sealed the arms. I wouldn't do that again though because I like the natural wood look better.
