Hanging a Squirrel Box - Will They Move In??

This is the 2nd squirrel box we have created. The first box was hung in 2014 was destroyed by a summer storm. Here is Box 2 made my OutDeh Wife.
BUT, will they Move in?

Love it. Doing the same thing! Will be putting ring doorbell cameras inside. Should be fun. I love squirrels and actually worry about them out there in the cold and heat of summer!

Hi Tracy, i would love to see the footage you capture with the ring cameras. I was just about to buy a trail camera and see what these guys have been up . since we have put this house i, there have been a few liters through there!

i know, i worry about the squirrels as well, when its hot they need extra water and when it gets so frozen, i worry they won’t be able to find shelter. so those nest boxes are a terrific idea!

the squirrels nesting box is really well made, inside by the hole (entrance!) is the piece of wood they can jump up to when they are bigger, but while they are small the space below will keep them safe, no matter who reaches in, the babies will be out of reach‼️. i hope i explained what was so cool about the nesting box, but kudos 👏🏽👏🏽 to you for building a safe and comfortable place for the squirrels- can’t wait to see them living there‼️

that didn’t take very long!! squirrels are naturally a bit nosy (i love that about them) and they like to check new things out, and leaving them food is a great way to get them to use the nesting box.

Really nice build! You got a baffling and a really nice veranda! Sometimes if their mom dies before they reach 3 months, they don’t learn how to make a drey. The mommy teaches them EVERYTHING. ❤

thank you! that makes sense, we never knew why some of the squirrels never figured out how to build a drey. There is a new generation of squirrels in the trees now, and they have multiple sturdy ones!

Aww I love it I never thought to give mine apples but I bet they would love that. I did give them strawberries today. I need to build houses I am afraid they are going to start nesting in my attic soon I have about 20 at least that I am feeding little boogers are getting expensive but I love them.

I see, you have a point there. We're about to build a new one, looking for the best design, we'll have to make sure we shield these critters from too much water, as we have gotten a lot! Thanks for the thoughtful idea

How did you get the box up the tree while on the ladder safely?

Hi! My wife was holding it most of the time . Thinking about the next one, I might get a pulley system going to get it up there .

@@OutDehFamily Me too. My fiancé carried ours up on the ladder and it was STRESSFUL! Gotta find a better safer way. I’m a rehabber so I need a system to hoist it and then lower it after the 4th of July for cleaning and maintenance. Thanks for the quick response!!
